Application of Percutaneous Needle Electrolysis Does Not Elicit Temperature Changes: An In Vitro Cadaveric Study.

Percutaneous needle electrolysis (PNE) consists of the ultrasound-guided application of a galvanic electrical current through a solid filament needle. One proposed therapeutic mechanism for this intervention is a potential thermal effect. The aim of this study was to investigate if the application of PNE induces changes in temperature in different cadaveric musculoskeletal tissues. A repeated measure experimental cadaveric study was designed with 10 cryopreserved knees (5 men, 5 women). Sterile stainless-steel needles of 40 mm length and 0.30 mm caliber were used in this study. An ultrasound-g

The Role of Humidity in the Management of Premature Neonates in a Rural Incubator.

Background While growing inside the uterus, the human fetus floats in amniotic fluid, and the mother maintains a stable temperature of 37 °C and a humidity of 100%. In most neonatal incubators, a stable temperature is maintained but not the humidity. We hypothesised that maintaining a humidity of 70% and a temperature of 32 °C in incubator rooms might improve the outcomes related to low birth weight (LBW) neonates. Methods In this interventional study, 30 preterm LBW neonates delivered at different gestational ages were studied. Instead of an incubator box, we converted one entire room (14'/9'

Understanding the reactogenicity of 4CMenB vaccine: Comparison of a novel and conventional method of assessing post-immunisation fever and correlation with pre-release in vitro pyrogen testing.

BACKGROUND: Better understanding of vaccine reactogenicity is crucial given its potential impact upon vaccine safety and acceptance. Here we report a comparison between conventional and novel (continuous) methods of monitoring temperature and evaluate any association between reactogenicity and the monocyte activation test (MAT) employed for testing four-component capsular group B meningococcal vaccine (4CMenB) batches prior to release for clinical use in Europe. METHODS: Healthy 7-12-week-old infants were randomised in two groups: group PCV13 2 + 1 (received pneumococcal conjugate vaccine 13

Using pairs of physiological models to estimate temporal variation in amphibian body temperature.

Physical models are often used to estimate ectotherm body temperatures, but designing accurate models for amphibians is difficult because they can vary in cutaneous resistance to evaporative water loss. To account for this variability, a recently published technique requires a pair of agar models that mimic amphibians with 0% and 100% resistance to evaporative water loss; the temperatures of these models define the lower and upper boundaries of possible amphibian body temperatures for the location in which they are placed. The goal of our study was to develop a method for using these pairs of

The effects of suboptimal eggshell temperature during incubation on broiler chick quality, live performance, and further processing yield.

Different incubation conditions can cause eggshell temperature (EST) to deviate from optimum. Two experiments were performed to determine the effect of low EST at the start of incubation and high EST at the end of incubation on hatchability, chick quality, 6-wk live performance, and breast meat yield of broiler chickens. In each experiment, 1,800 eggs from a single flock were divided and set into 2 setters. From 0 to 10 d of incubation, one setter was set to attain an EST of 36.6 degrees C (considered low), whereas the other was set to 37.8 degrees C (the control temperature). Using an infrare

Cell-cycle genes in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis are cued by aerial heat stress in a fluctuating tidal environment.

Mytilus galloprovincialis is a sessile, facultative anaerobic mussel inhabiting intertidal zones, where it experiences daily fluctuations in oxygen, temperature, and food availability. These environmental fluctuations require coordinated shifts in metabolism and cellular processes such as the cell cycle. As growth in mussels is environmentally driven, understanding how external perturbations modulate cell-cycle regulation is essential. Despite conserved cell-cycle machinery across eukaryotes, its dynamics in facultative anaerobic marine invertebrates remain largely unexplored. Mussels switch b

Adverse events following immunization (AEFI) with fractional one-fifth and one-half doses of yellow fever vaccine compared to standard dose in children 9-23 months old in Uganda, 2019-2022 - final report.

BACKGROUND: Lacking adequate safety data, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a full dose of yellow fever (YF) vaccine to children two years or younger. In older age groups in outbreak settings, the WHO recommends a fractional dose of YF due to vaccine shortages. Therefore, in children aged 9-23 months, we conducted a single-blind randomized controlled trial to compare the safety of fractional 1/2 and 1/5 doses of BioManguinhos 17DD YF vaccine with the full dose. This paper presents the final safety analysis for this trial. METHODS: At three study sites in Uganda, healthy children
