Pattern of tick aggregation on mice: larger than expected distribution tail enhances the spread of tick-borne pathogens.

The spread of tick-borne pathogens represents an important threat to human and animal health in many parts of Eurasia. Here, we analysed a 9-year time series of Ixodes ricinus ticks feeding on Apodemus flavicollis mice (main reservoir-competent host for tick-borne encephalitis, TBE) sampled in Trentino (Northern Italy). The tail of the distribution of the number of ticks per host was fitted by three theoretical distributions: Negative Binomial (NB), Poisson-LogNormal (PoiLN), and Power-Law (PL). The fit with theoretical distributions indicated that the tail of the tick infestation pattern on m

Survey of the livestock ticks of the North West province, South Africa.

Ticks, as vectors of disease and damage agents, impact directly and indirectly on the economy of the livestock industry in southern Africa. This study surveyed the occurrence and distribution of ticks infesting livestock across the North West province, South Africa. During three phases in consecutive years, officers of the provincial Veterinary Department collected specimens monthly from livestock hosts at specified sites across the province. Data analysis constituted the fourth phase of the study. A total of 1090 collections from 265 sites yielded 42 566 tick specimens, comprising 22 differen

Ecological relationships of Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann with other tick species on wildlife hosts at cow-calf farms implementing integrated pest management in eastern Tennessee.

Longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis) is an invasive tick species that parasitizes a variety of vertebrate hosts and transmits pathogens affecting humans and livestock in the United States (US). Unfortunately, the behaviour of this tick at the wildlife–livestock interface is not well understood. To better understand how H. longicornis uses wildlife hosts and interacts with established tick species on farm settings we sampled small and medium wildlife seasonally for a year, using Sherman and Tomahawk traps, on three H. longicornis-infested cattle farms in eastern Tennessee. We confirmed t

Ectoparasites from elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) from Wyoming.

Hides of nine elk, collected during the winter of 1986-1987 from the National Elk Refuge, Wyoming (USA) were examined for ectoparasites. Parasites recovered were mites, Psoroptes sp. (five elk); lice, Solenopotes ferrisi and Bovicola (Bovicola) longicornis (seven elk); and winter ticks, Dermacentor albipictus (nine elk). Three elk with severe scabies had an estimated 0.6 x 10(6), 3.8 x 10(6) and 6.5 x 10(6) mites, respectively. Densities of mites were much higher in skin regions with severe dermatitis. Skin lesions on elk with scabies consisted of dense, often moist, scabs extending along the

Selective control of Rhipicephalus microplus in a dairy cattle herd from different genetic groups.

Alternatives for Rhipicephalus microplus control are needed in the light of its resistance to acaricides. One of the ways to decrease the use of acaricides in a herd is selective control (SC). In the present study, SC was evaluated in a dairy herd consisting of different genetic groups: Holstein, Jersey, crossbreed and Girolando. Ticks were counted in the right anterior third region on around 90 cows, totaling nine evaluations at intervals of 21 days. Commercial pour-on acaricide was applied only when the infestation was greater than or equal to eight ticks larger than 4 mm in the anterior thi

Effect of host populations on the intensity of ticks and the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens: how to interpret the results of deer exclosure experiments.

Deer are important blood hosts for feeding Ixodes ricinus ticks but they do not support transmission of many tick-borne pathogens, so acting as dead-end transmission hosts. Mathematical models show their role as tick amplifiers, but also suggest that they dilute pathogen transmission, thus reducing infection prevalence. Empirical evidence for this is conflicting: experimental plots with deer removal (i.e. deer exclosures) show that the effect depends on the size of the exclosure. Here we present simulations of dynamic models that take into account different tick stages, and several host specie

Efficacy of pheromone-acaricide-impregnated tail-tag decoys for controlling the bont tick, Amblyomma hebraeum (Acari: Ixodidae), on cattle in Zimbabwe.

A large-scale field test using pheromone-acaricide-impregnated plastic tail-tag decoys demonstrated excellent efficacy of these devices for control of the bont tick, Amblyomma hebraeum, on cattle in Zimbabwe. The tail tags were impregnated with a mixture containing o-nitrophenol, methyl salicylate, 2,6-dichlorophenol and phenylacetaldehyde and one of three different acaricides (cyfluthrin, flumethrin or alphacypermethrin). o-Nitrophenol and methyl salicylate are components of the A. hebraeum attraction-aggregation-attachment pheromone, while 2,6-dichlorophenol and phenylacetaldehyde are proven

The transovarial transmission of Babesia trautmanni by Rhipicephalus simus to domestic pigs.

Rhipicephalus simus was, for the first time, experimentally proven to be a transovarial vector of Babesia trautmanni of domestic pigs. The nymphal and adult progeny of experimentally infected female ticks transmitted the infection to 2 susceptible splenectomized pigs. Features of the infection included a prepatent period of 6-8 days post-tick infestation, a febrile reaction for 3 days and a maximum parasitaemia score of 15 (more than 6 parasites per 300 red blood cells). Other clinical signs in both pigs were mild inappetence and listlessness. Both pigs recovered without any antibabesial thera

Five decades of tick-man interaction in Denmark--an analysis.

The tick Ixodes ricinus (L.) is a known vector of several zoonotic diseases such as Tick Borne Encephalitis (TBE), Lyme borreliosis and ehrlichiosis. The interaction between humans and ticks are at the very core of our understanding of the epidemiology of tick borne zoonoses, but only few experimental studies have been performed. Hence our understanding of the epidemiology of tick-borne disease has to rest on the assumption that the potential tick activity, which is reflected in tick samples from the vegetation or samples from animals, corresponds with tick-human interaction. Observations whic

Patterns of distributional congruence of rodent ectoparasites in Iran: A first approach.

Rodents represent the most diverse mammalian group and are considered important hosts for different groups of parasites serving as vectors for some zoonotic agents. Although there have been numerous studies conducted on occurrence records of ectoparasites on rodents, there is a paucity of knowledge regarding the biogeographical patterns of ectoparasites on this group of small mammals. In this study, a quantitative approach was employed to identify patterns of distributional congruence (PDCs) of ectoparasites of rodents in Iran. A total of 121 occurrence records for 37 species of ectoparasites

Molecular prevalence and genetic diversity of Hepatozoon canis in Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. and Hyalomma anatolicum infesting dogs.

Hepatozoon canis is an apicomplexan protozoan parasite that is transmitted to canids and by hard ticks belonging to Rhipicephalus and Amblyomma genera. Dogs are more exposed to the vectors and vector borne diseases due to their outdoor activities and closer proximity to the environment they are more exposed to the environment. The present study was aimed to report the molecular prevalence of Hepatozoon canis in the DNA of Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. (n = 88) and Hyalomma anatolicum (n = 16) that were infesting dogs in two provinces of Pakistan. Genetic diversity of the parasite and risk fact

Comparative evaluation of Amblyomma ovale ticks infected and noninfected by Rickettsia sp. strain Atlantic rainforest, the agent of an emerging rickettsiosis in Brazil.

In 2010, a novel spotted fever group rickettsiosis was reported in the Atlantic rainforest coast of Brazil. The etiological agent was identified as Rickettsia sp. strain Atlantic rainforest, and the tick Amblyomma ovale was incriminated as the presumed vector. The present study evaluated under laboratory conditions four colonies of A. ovale: two started from engorged females that were naturally infected by Rickettsia sp. strain Atlantic rainforest (designated as infected groups); the two others started from noninfected females (designated as control groups). All colonies were reared in paralle

Enhancement of tick-borne encephalitis virus transmission by tick salivary gland extracts.

To investigate the role of ticks in TBE virus transmission, salivary gland extract (SGE) was derived from partially fed female Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks. Guinea-pigs were infested with uninfected R. appendiculatus nymphs and inoculated with a mixture of TBE virus and SGE or with virus alone. The number of ticks which on average acquired virus from feeding on animals inoculated with TBE virus and SGE from partially fed ticks was 4-fold greater than the number that became infected by feeding on animals inoculated with virus alone or virus plus

Babesiosis in an Egyptian boy aquired from pet dog, and a general review.

Human babesiosis has been documented in many countries. It is a zoonotic protozoan disease of medical, veterinary and economic importance. In this study, a twelve years old boy was referred to the hospital with intermittent fever of unknown origin. On clinical, parasitological and serological bases the case proved to be babesiosis. The boy acquired the infection from his pet dog which was heavily infested with Rhipicephalus sanguineus and suffered a mild feature of animal babesiosis. The patient was successfully treated with Atovaquone plus Azithromycin without relapse for one month follow up.

Barriers to entry: A participatory science study of tick identification, monitoring, and physical barriers to reduce tick bites on horses.

Equine tick-borne diseases pose increasing challenges due to climate change and expanding tick geographical ranges. With no vaccines available for Lyme disease or equine anaplasmosis in horses, tick bite prevention remains the primary control method. This two-year study evaluated tick species composition on horses in Pennsylvania and assessed the effectiveness of physical barriers for tick prevention through community-based participatory research. The study engaged horse owners as research partners. Year 1 (2022) established baseline tick surveillance across 45 participants with 60 horses, con

High Seroprevalence and Risk Factors of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus in Camels at Livestock Markets in Border Regions, Nigeria, 2023-2024.

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a highly fatal, tick-borne zoonosis in humans for which no licensed vaccines exist. Camels are important hosts of Hyalomma ticks, yet data on their role in CCHF epidemiology in Nigeria are limited. This study assessed seroprevalence and risk factors of the CCHF virus (CCHFV) in camels from major livestock markets in northern Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From June 2023 to July 2024, 812 camels were sampled during 54 weekly visits to Maiduguri (Borno), Maigatari (Jigawa), and Illela (Sokoto) livestock markets. Epidemiological data (sex, a

Histamine release factor from Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer): characterization and in vitro assessment as a protective antigen.

A cDNA encoding a 174-amino-acid orthologue of a tick histamine release factor (HRF) was identified from the haematophagous poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae. The predicted D. gallinae HRF protein (Dg-HRF-1) sequence is highly conserved with the tick HRFs (identity 52-54%) and to a lesser degree with translationally controlled tumour proteins (TCTP) from mammals and other invertebrates (range 38-47%). Phylogenetically, Dg-HRF-1 partitions with the tick HRF clade suggesting a shared linage and potentially similar function(s). A recombinant Dg-HRF-1 protein (rDg-HRF-1) was produced and shown
