A new efficient approach for the preparation of (188)Re radiopharmaceuticals starting from [(188)ReO(4)](-), produced at a carrier-free level through the (188)W/(188)Re generator system, is described. The reaction procedure was based on the combined action of different reagents and has been applied in detail to the preparation of the therapeutic agent (188)Re(V)-DMSA (H(2)DMSA [meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid]). Palladium catalyzed cross coupling reactions of a vinyl triflate intermediate and various alkenyl stannanes afforded trisubstituted Z-olefins stereoselectively in high yields. These olefins were then converted to the corresponding 9Z-retinoic acids via Horner-Emmons reaction and subsequent basic hydrolysis in excellent yields.

The use of a non-volatile modifier and the simultaneous exclusion of oxygen by flushing with helium in ion-pair HPLC of 99mTc(Sn)EHDP-complexes prevents spurious oxidation during the separation process. It thus enables the omission of the reducing agent from the eluent solution and the determination of the labelling percentage from the TcO4(1)-peak. In addition, retention times become more reproducible.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) and peptide YY (PYY) are two structurally related peptides. PYY has been identified within endocrine cells and NPY within nerves of the gastrointestinal tract. Infusion of PYY at a low dose at a nominal rate of 2 pmol/kg/min resulted in an increment of 59.2 +/- 7.1 pmol/1 in plasma concentration and a significant delay in gastric emptying of glucose. Infusion of NPY at the same rate produced similar plasma concentrations (52.5 +/- 1.1 pmol/1) and had no significant effect on the rate of gastric emptying.

Labelling yield and radiochemical purity, higher than 95%, of 99mTc-colloid preparations were determined by using the paper chromatography method. Less than 3% of labelled citric acid, added to the preparation as a buffer solution, has been found in 99mTc-sulphur colloid. In this study, the novel tin-based catalysts (Sn(II)/PN@AC) were prepared using the phosphorus and nitrogen dual-modified activated carbon as support and SnCl2 as active compounds, as well as then evaluated in acetylene hydrochlorination. A tin-containing benzene, stannabenzene, was synthesized and isolated as a monomeric form. The X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed the planar structure of the stannabenzene ring and unsaturated Sn-C and C-C bonds without bond alternation. Low-field shifted NMR signals and negative nuclear-independent chemical shifts (NICS) values are in agreement with the features of aromatic compounds. The narrow HOMO-LUMO gap of stannabenzene has been revealed by UV/Vis spectroscopy and electrochemistry.

On the basis of Gortel & Grendel (J. Exp. Med., 1925, 41, 439-494) discovery, the importance of the lipid bilayer as an integral and indispensible component of the cell membrane is discussed. In particular, attention focuses on the interaction between membranes and amphiphilic substances. The effect on membranes of quaternary ammonium salts, both in the form of pesticides and oxidants as well as organic compounds of tin and lead are discussed in greater detail.

An urgent search is being made for generic reagents that promote free radical synthetic transformations as means of banishing the toxic threat of organotin hydrides. Although second-generation tin reagents are beguiling, organosilanes and a range of thiocarbonyl compounds are more intrinsically benign. Metal-free radical chain sequences based around cyclohexadiene derivatives are being developed (see reaction scheme), and tetrathiafulvalenes mimic metals and allow a crossover from homolytic to ionic chemistry.
