Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography detects optic atrophy due to optic tract syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral injury of the optic tract leads to asymmetrical optic atrophy in both eyes derived from the crossing of the nerve fibers at the chiasm. This report demonstrates unique imaging appearances of optic atrophy due to this uncommon condition detected by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). METHODS: Cirrus and RTVue measurements were performed in four cases of optic tract syndrome. Circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) thickness was obtained from both instruments and ganglion cell complex (GCC) integrity was obtained from RTVue. The presumable re

Repeatability of choroidal optical coherence tomography angiography metrics in healthy young adults.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Assessment of choroidal perfusion plays an important role in evaluating ocular vascular status and may assist in managing vascular alterations in ocular and systemic disease. BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography enables non-invasive assessment of choroidal perfusion; however, repeatability across different depths remains unclear. This study evaluated within- and between-day repeatability of choroidal OCT angiography measurements in healthy young adults and the effect of image pre-processing. METHODS: Twenty healthy adults (18-35 years) underwent repe

Optical coherence tomography of the tympanic membrane and middle ear: clinical applications.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive optical imaging technique to image soft tissue and thin bony structures with high resolution, approaching that of histology. This review summarizes recent progress in the clinical application of OCT for tympanic membrane and middle ear disease. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent reports from clinical trials show that OCT is having a meaningful impact on the diagnosis of fluid in the middle ear. In parallel with this, numerous groups are obtaining previously unattainable normative data in vivo on human middle ear structures. OCT is al

Microstructural changes in irradiated teeth revealed by swept-source optical coherence tomography.

Radiation-induced caries is a late complication of radiotherapy for head and neck cancers. Although direct irradiation-induced changes in tooth structure may contribute to its development, these changes have not been fully characterized. This study evaluated irradiation-associated microstructural alterations and tissue density changes in human teeth using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Eight extracted fully impacted human third molars were assigned to irradiated and non-irradiated groups (n = 4 each). The irradiated group received X-rays at a total dose of 70 Gy, a clinica

Assessing changes in ultraviolet radiation-exposed mouse skin using optical coherence tomography.

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, frequently resulting from excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Early detection and effective prevention of photodamage are important to mitigate the long-term risks of skin cancer. In this study, we investigate the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for assessing photodamage over time and the efficacy of photodamage prevention treatments non-invasively. Of the n = 81 hairless mice, 75 of them were exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) three times per week to induce photodamage. Two different systemic photodamage preve

Wide-field self-referenced optical coherence tomography imaging of the corneal microlayers.

We present a technique for wide-field OCT imaging of the cornea using self-referenced interference of the anterior corneal surface with the underlying corneal structure. The method employs a custom objective lens that ensures that the probing beam remains nearly perpendicular to the anterior corneal surface, effectively utilizing it as a reference to generate interference. This approach allows for high-resolution, three-dimensional imaging of corneal layers over a 9mm optical zone. Tests on human subjects show the ability of the system to quantify the anterior corneal layer thickness.

Retinal thermal deformations measured with phase-sensitive optical coherence tomography in vivo.

Controlling the tissue temperature rise during retinal laser therapy is essential for predictable outcomes, especially at non-damaging settings. We demonstrate a method for determining the temperature rise in the retina using phase-sensitive optical coherence tomography (pOCT) in vivo. Measurements based on the thermally induced optical path length changes (ΔOPL) in the retina during a 10-ms laser pulse allow detection of the temperature rise with a precision less than 1 °C, which is sufficient for calibration of the laser power for patient-specific non-damaging therapy. We observed a signific

APOSTEL-R Recommendations for Reporting Retinal Optical Coherence Tomography Studies in Rodents.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) in rodent models has been used to longitudinally image retinal changes, to define end points for more costly or time-consuming experiments, and to better understand the pathophysiology underlying OCT findings in human diseases. No standardization of rodent OCT reporting currently exists. Here, we aim to establish consensus recommendation for reporting results from retinal OCT studies in rodents. METHODS: Initial recommendations were developed based on the APOSTEL criteria for quantitative OCT reporting in humans by a core t
