Tooth eruption is characterized by a concert of mechanisms that result in the emergence of teeth in the oral cavity. Genetic variants seem to regulate this process and the formation of a gingival sulcus around the teeth. Interindividual variability in the response to microbial triggers in the sulcus plays an important role in the onset and progression of periodontal diseases. Host genetic variants can influence this variability, affecting the response of the host to the subgingival biofilm. Genetic factors affecting tooth eruption could potentially influence susceptibility to periodontal disea

Tooth Erosions Associated with Gastroesophageal Reflux: Cause, Prevention and Restorative Therapy Abstract. Dental erosions are caused by the recurring contact of solutions which are unsaturated in tooth minerals, ith hard tooth substances. This initially leads to softening and later to an irreversible loss of hard tooth substance. Erosion is observed particularly with excessive consumption of acidic foods (e.g. soft drinks or citrus fruits) but also in connection with gastrointestinal (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or psychosomatic diseases (anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa). The aim of

BACKGROUND: The development of dentition begins in the embryonic oral cavity and progresses in the branchial arches and alveolar bone. Continuous cellular and molecular crosstalk occurs during crown formation, after which the tooth germ begins to migrate apically through the alveolar process into the oral cavity. It eventually comes in contact with its antagonist in the contralateral jaw to establish functional occlusion. Any defect in either step can result in delayed tooth development, the spectrum of which varies from a congenitally missing tooth to an impacted tooth (infraocclusion) with a

Wnts include more than 19 types of secreted glycoproteins that are involved in a wide range of pathological processes in oral and maxillofacial diseases. The transmission of Wnt signalling from the extracellular matrix into the nucleus includes canonical pathways and noncanonical pathways, which play an important role in tooth development, alveolar bone regeneration, and related diseases. In recent years, with the in-depth study of Wnt signalling in oral and maxillofacial-related diseases, many new conclusions and perspectives have been reached, and there are also some controversies. This arti

Seventy-one skulls from the Yin-Shang period tombs of Anyang, China, were examined for the incidence of observable dental diseases, including dental caries, alveolar bone resorption (an index of periodontal disease), ante-mortem tooth loss and tooth attrition. Because the remains were excavated from tombs with funerary items, the burials are believed to be of Anyang citizens. Our study indicates carious tooth frequency in the Yin-Shang period was rather low (2.9-4.0%). Periodontal disease frequency was 18.3-26.9%, and ante-mortem tooth loss frequency was 2.0-7.5%. To determine the relative pre

Most oral diseases show gender-specific differences in prevalence. This is true for common diseases such as caries and periodontitis, which are considered the main causes of tooth loss, affecting women more often than men. Furthermore, other diseases, e.g. temporomandibular joint dysfunction, malignant oral tumours, and several diseases of the oral mucosa show differing incidences between men and women. This is confirmed by empirical evidence from studies in Germany and other European countries, the USA, and emerging nations in Amercia and Southeast Asia. The present article aims to summarize

INTRODUCTION: Tooth caries and loss are frequent clinical diseases in dentistry. Tissue engineering is a new therapeutic choice for the complete biological regeneration of pulpal and dental tissues in regenerative dentistry. The aim of this study was to establish a protocol for in situ regeneration of a dental bud in the extracted socket.
METHODS: The current study examined tooth bud regeneration with dental pulp stem cells induced by a dentin derivative signal in a rabbit's jaw.
RESULT: A tooth bud was regenerated; the morphology and structure of it were typical, and it was post-Bell stage.

The junctional epithelium (JE) is an epithelial component that is directly attached to the tooth surface and has a protective function against periodontal diseases. In this study, we determined the origin of the JE using a bioengineered tooth technique. We transplanted the bioengineered tooth germ into the alveolar bone with an epithelial component that expressed green fluorescence protein. The reduced enamel epithelium from the bioengineered tooth fused with the oral epithelium, and the JE was apparently formed around the bioengineered tooth 50 days after transplantation. Importantly, the JE

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases are a significant global public health challenge. Current evidence indicates that several chronic conditions are individually associated with tooth loss. People are living with more than one chronic condition, known as multimorbidity (MM). Considering the common risk factors for oral and chronic diseases, this study aimed to evaluate the association between MM and tooth loss in the Chilean population.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study with secondary data from the latest Chilean National Health Survey (ENS 2016-17). The number of remaining teeth was classified into four

The loss of anterior teeth has serious functional, esthetic disabilities, in addition to compromising the patients' quality of life. Various etiologies can be attributed to the anterior tooth loss, including trauma, caries, and periodontal diseases. The chronic mouth breathing due to nasal adenoids is known to enhance the gingival and periodontal diseases. The dental literature proves the association of nasal breathing, tongue thrusting, and anterior open bite. Arch shape and tooth position are primarily determined by the equilibrium of the forces from tongue and perioral musculature. Increase

Recently, sonography of the fetal face has gained increasing importance in prenatal diagnosis. It is not yet clear whether sonographic depiction of fetal tooth germs would have an influence on the prenatal diagnosis of ectodermal dysplasia syndromes. During routine malformation screening, horizontal sections of fetal jaws were visualized and examined for tooth germs in 124 pregnant women following sonographic 'facing'. Histological jaw sections of fetuses that had died in utero at various gestational ages were produced in order to examine the degree of correspondence between the sonographic an

Tooth eruption is defined as the movement of a tooth from its site of development within the alveolar process to its functional position in the oral cavity. It is a complex process that can be influenced by a number of general factors like genetics, nutrition, preterm birth, socioeconomic factors, hormonal factors, various systemic diseases and some local factors. Timing of tooth eruption depends on the chronologic age. Marked deviation in eruption timing and developmental stage at which tooth erupts may confuse a clinician and affect the treatment planning so knowledge of such cases helps in

Thromboembolic diseases, which comprise venous thromboembolic diseases and arterial thromboembolic diseases, have become the number one cause of death worldwide. To prevent or treat thrombosis, patients with thromboembolic diseases need to take antithrombotic drugs, which would increase the risk of bleeding during and after surgery. Tooth extraction is the most common operation in oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics. Although patients given oral antithrombotic drugs do not need to undergo drug withdrawal, the perioperative management of such patients remains confusing to most clinicians. Mo

Tooth eruption is an important and unique biological process during craniofacial development. Both the genetic and environmental factors can interfere with this process. Here we aimed to find the failure pattern of tooth eruption among five genetic diseases. Both systematic review and meta-analysis were used to identify the genotype-phenotype associations of unerupted teeth. The meta-analysis was based on the characteristics of abnormal tooth eruption in 223 patients with the mutations in PTH1R, RUNX2, COL1A1/2, CLCN7, and FAM20A respectively. We found all the patients presented selective fail
