Secondary mandibular osteomyelitis complicated with a pathological fracture.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pathological mandibular fractures, defined as fractures that occur in regions where bone has been weakened by an underlying pathological process, are rare, accounting for fewer than 2 % of all fractures of the mandible. Mandibular pathological fractures can have several aetiologies including osteomyelitis, osteoradionecrosis (ORN), surgical interventions, bisphosphonate-related osteochemonecrosis of the jaw and tumoral lesions. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 13-year-old male patient following a tooth infection with a right facial swelling and limited mo

Evaluation of fit and fracture strength of three-dimensional provisional crowns printed with different orientations and different layer thicknesses: an in-vitro study.

AIM: The effect of 3D printing parameters on the marginal fit and fracture resistance of 3D printed provisional crowns is not clear. The objective of this research was to use different printing orientations and layer thicknesses to build 3D printed provisional crowns and to evaluate the marginal fit and fracture resistance of it. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A maxillary first premolar resin tooth was reduced for all-ceramic tooth preparation then was scanned using intraoral scanner. 60 dies were printed using Digital Light Processing (DLP) 3D printer. One of the printed dies was scanned. The design

Treatment of root fracture by CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers: an in vitro study.

The purpose of this in vitro study was to use scanning electron microscopy and polarized light microscopy to evaluate the feasibility of using either the CO2 laser or an Nd:YAG laser in combination with air/water surface cooling to effect fusion of fractured tooth roots. The experimental unit consisted of 81 single-rooted teeth, each with an induced root fracture. Fifty-six teeth that had been reapproximated in dental stone and 25 teeth that had been reapproximated with C-clamps were assigned to untreated control groups or groups for treatment using CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers. Laser treatment consi

Effects of irradiation, restoration and crown fracture type on the maximum load to fracture traumatized incisors: An ex vivo study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Radiotherapy makes teeth prone to tooth fractures. However, the relationship between radiotherapy and maximum load to fracture teeth that suffered a crown fracture is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of fracture type, radiation dose, fracture time, and their interactions on maximum load to fracture irradiated teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 140 permanent incisors were divided into two fracture type groups (uncomplicated and complicated) each of which included seven radiation dose subgroups (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60). The t…

[Pulpectomy. Why? When?].

There are many circumstances under which the condition of the pulp calls for root canal work, due to the real or potential risk of pain, infection, inflammation or functional difficulties (acute, irreversible pulpitis, chronic pulpitic conditions, necrosis and its consequences, etc.). Other circumstances exist in which injury to the pulp is not necessarily irreversible: initial pulpitis, iatrogenic fracture of the pulp, traumatisms, dystrophic deteriorations. The high success rate for endodontic therapy could argue for elimination of impaired or necrose-prone pulp. In fact, however, unsuccessf

Mesiodens as a risk factor in treatment of trauma cases.

The presence of mesiodens often results in complications including retention of primary teeth and delayed eruption of permanent teeth, closure of eruption path, rotations, retention, root resorption, pulp necrosis, and diastema as well as nasal eruption and formation of dentigerous and primordial cysts. Less common complications involving the permanent incisors include dilaceration of the developing roots and loss of tooth vitality. Therefore, early diagnosis of mesiodens has particular importance in terms of preventing such complications. However, with respect to surgical removal of mesiodens

Cooperation between physicians and dentists for osteonecrosis of the jaw: a 2022 Japanese survey.

INTRODUCTION: A 2015 survey of the Japan Osteoporosis Society (JOS) on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) revealed that cooperation between physicians and dentists was poor. Discontinuation of antiresorptive agents before tooth extraction was found to increase adverse events without preventing MRONJ. We compared this 2015 survey with a new survey conducted in 2022 to investigate cooperation between physicians and dentists for MRONJ. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A web-based structured questionnaire including 13 key queries was sent to 3813 physicians who were members of JOS, and 122

Secondary Treatment of Mandibular Bone Fracture Using Sagittal Split Osteotomy and Segmentation of the Mandible: A Case Report.

The secondary treatment of mandibular bone fractures poses a great challenge due to the complexity of several factors, such as incorrect primary fracture repositioning, inadequate internal fixation, nonunion, necrosis, local inflammation and infection, tooth loss, and malocclusion, serving as obstacles encountered by surgical teams. The aim of this case report is to detail the planning process, surgical technique, and outcome of the secondary treatment of the post-traumatic deformation, bone exposure, and partial necrosis of the mandible. The new approach described herein incorporated 3D plann

Impact of conservative and traditional endodontic accesses on the strength of maxillary zirconia crowns.

PURPOSE: Performing endodontic procedures on existing crowns is common when replacing the crown is not feasible. Traditional triangular access (TTA) is standard for maxillary molars, but more conservative designs are reported in the literature. However, research comparing the fracture resistance of maxillary molar zirconia crowns using traditional and novel endodontic access sealed with composite resin remains limited. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the fracture resistance of maxillary molar zirconia crowns with various endodontic cavity designs: traditional triangular acce

[Advances of self-healing dental composite resin].

Degradation of composite resin during ageing always produces micro-cracks, the latter could gradually expand, leading to the fracture of tooth restoration. In order to extend the service life of composite resin by repairing cracks intelligently, self-healing microcapsule models have been introduced in resin-based dental materials. This paper will present the concept and classification of self-healing materials, and review the research progresses on self-healing dental resin.
