Role of cancer antigen-125 from pleural & ascitic fluid samples in non malignant conditions.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: CA-125, an ovarian tumor marker is known to increase in non malignant conditions such as tubercular and non tubercular pleuritis and ascites. We undertook this study to evaluate non-specific rise in CA-125 levels in conditions associated with pleural effusion and ascites and also to understand the mechanism of its secretion. METHODS: CA-125 levels in 38 pleural and 46 ascitic fluid samples from non malignant cases and 10 blood samples from pulmonary tuberculosis cases were estimated by ELISA. The ascitic fluid samples were collected from cases of bacterial peritonitis,

Diagnostic Imaging of Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis Across Organ Systems.

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is an infectious disease characterized by the invasion of Mycobacterium tuberculosis beyond the lungs. Diagnosis is frequently delayed due to nonspecific clinical presentations that vary by organ system, making diagnostic imaging essential for disease detection, characterization, and treatment monitoring. The objective of this review is to examine and summarize imaging-based approaches for the diagnostic evaluation of EPTB across multiple body systems, including the central nervous system, spine, cardiovascular system, lymphatic system, abdominal and hepatic

Infectious Diseases in Internationally Adopted Children and Intercountry Discrepancies Among Screening Protocols, A Narrative Review.

Internationally adopted children (IAC) require thorough health assessments at time of arrival in the host country. As these children are at higher risk for infectious diseases, such as gastrointestinal parasites, tuberculosis, hepatitis, syphilis, and human immunodeficiency virus, early diagnosis of infectious diseases is fundamental for the optimal management of the child and, also, to reduce the risk of transmission to the adopting community. Comparative analysis of the screening protocols adopted in Europe, the United States, and Canada revealed different approaches to the adopted children.

Vaccination status and prevalence of enteric viruses in internationally adopted children. The case of Parma, Italy.

On age basis, internationally adopted children may have begun or fully completed all required vaccinations, but official documentation from original Countries is frequently insufficient. Aims of this study were to evaluate the seroprotection rate for tuberculosis, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis and tetanus according to immunization cards in 67 children recently adopted and to test the prevalence of enterovirus on faecal specimens. Seroprotection and vaccination status were frequently inconsistent and these results confirm that immunitary surveillance is a cornerstone for the prevention of diseases

[Hepatic granulomas].

Liver granulomas are histopathologically defined and associated with various liver and non-livers disorders. There are five main causes of liver granulomatosis: primary biliary cirrhosis, tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, B and C viral hepatitis, and drug related. In the other cases, not associated with an underlying systemic granulomatous disease, a systematic diagnostic approach should be used to identify less common etiologies. After a careful diagnostic work-up, a long-term follow-up of patients with undetermined liver granulomatosis is mandatory as it may be a presenting feature of liver lymphom

Infections in Hispanic immigrants.

Hispanic immigrants are an increasing portion of the United States (US) population. In addition to being at risk for diseases common in the US-born population, Hispanic immigrants also are at risk for infections that do not usually occur in the US-born population. Thus, such diseases as tuberculosis, neurocysticercosis, brucellosis, typhoid fever, malaria, amebiasis, viral exanthems, and hepatitis need to be considered in Hispanics who present with fever or focal lesions. When included in the differential diagnosis, most of these infections can be readily diagnosed and treated with currently a

Infectious complications of tattoos.

Tattooing carries several medical risks, including the transmission of infectious diseases. We review the published literature on the transmission of hepatitis B virus, human immunodeficiency virus, Treponema pallidum, papillomavirus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and other organisms by tattooing. Education, through public health measures, should promote the prevention of infectious disease transmission. Particular populations who could benefit from education include prisoners, individuals involved with correctional facilities, youths, military personnel, and health care providers coming in cont

[Erythema nodosum in pediatric patients. A study of 22 cases].

In this study we report the cases of 22 pediatric patients with nodal erythema. The predominance of this condition in male patients was clear. Etiological factors were determined in 77% of the patients. In our series, the principal cause was tuberculosis (36%). We would like to point out the etiological diversity in this small series of children: streptococcal infection, gastrointestinal infection with Salmonella enteritidis or Campylobacter jejuni, cat scratch disease, infectious mononucleosis, chronic hepatitis B, Crohn's disease and pharmacological (amoxycillin). In 22% of the cases no caus

Vaccinal status of healthcare students in Lille.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccine recommendations are the same for healthcare students than for other health care workers. The aim of this study was to describe mandatory and recommended vaccinal coverage and evaluate the benefit of systematic monitoring by a medical team in the Lille Medical School. POPULATION AND METHODS: A survey was performed from June 2011 to August 2011 on all students in the first year of Health Care Studies. The personal immunization record was considered as evidence of vaccination. The reference vaccinal schedule was the one recommended by the French High Council for Public Heal

Varicella with rapidly progressive hepatitis presenting with multiple hepatic nodules in a child with acute leukemia.

Abdominal pain may precede the characteristic varicella skin lesions in immunocompromised patients with visceral varicella. The absence of skin lesions may delay timely diagnosis and treatment of varicella for those patients. Furthermore, abdominal imaging findings to provide information to diagnose visceral varicella have rarely been reported. Varicella was diagnosed in a 5-year-old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukemia complaining of fever and abdominal pain followed by papulovesicular skin lesions. Later, the patient was found to have rapidly progressive acute hepatitis, and abdominal compu

Seroprevalence of hepatitis B and C virus among highly active antiretroviral therapy experienced children in Gondar, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Globally, chronic viral hepatitis is the cause of mortality alongside human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and tuberculosis. Published reports on the seroprevalence of hepatitis B and C viruses among HIV-infected children are lacking in sub-Saharan Africa. Hence, this study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of hepatitis B and C viruses among highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)-experienced children at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. METHODS: We conducted a hospital-based cross-sectional study to determine the sero

Selected infectious disease risks in international adoptees.

In 1985 there were approximately 8500 international adoptions in the United States, a phenomenon that has doubled in the past 5 years. The majority of these children originate from areas of the world where the hepatitis B virus is hyperendemic and where the prevalence of numerous other infectious diseases is higher than it is domestically. We consecutively screened 360 adopted Korean children for hepatitis B virus markers, syphilis serology, tuberculin status and the presence of parasitic infection. Ten hepatitis B virus carriers were identified (prevalence, 2.8%) as were two children with con

Association of viral exposure with tuberculosis disease progression: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Viral infections have been found to affect the outcome of bacterial infections, but for the case of tuberculosis, much emphasis has been on HIV and less attention has been given to other viruses. We conducted a systematic review to identify studies that investigated the association of viral infection other than HIV and HIV coinfection with tuberculosis disease susceptibility and progression. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Ovid Embase, and Scopus electronic databases using search terms "tuberculosis, viral disease, not HIV, TB, virus" in text words and MeSH terms for cohort and cro

High incidence and persistence of hepatitis B virus infection in individuals receiving HIV care in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Tuberculosis (TB) are common infections in South Africa. We utilized the opportunity of care provision for HIV-TB co-infected patients to better understand the relationship between these coinfections, determine the magnitude of the problem, and identify risk factors for HBV infection in HIV infected patients with and without TB in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. METHODS: This retrospective cohort analysis was undertaken in 2018. In-care HIV infected patients were included in the analysis. Results from clinical records we

Hepatitis C virus, directly acting antivirals and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has been associated with both infective and noninfective etiologies. It is usually preceded by acute gastrointestinal or respiratory infections. We report an unusual case of GBS in a hepatitis C virus-positive hemodialysis (HD)-dependent patient who was being treated with sofosbuvir and daclatasvir along with antitubercular drugs for pulmonary tuberculosis. One should keep GBS in the differential diagnosis in HD patients whenever patient presents with lower limb weakness. Early diagnosis will help in timely initiation of treatment which is crucial to treat GBS.

Severe hypercholesterolemia mediated by lipoprotein X in a patient with cholestasis.

Lipoprotein X (LpX) is an abnormal lipoprotein associated with cholestasis. It is a significant cause of severe hypercholesterolemia and should always be considered in patients with cholestatic liver disease. This case highlights the significance of LpX as a cause of severe hypercholesterolemia in a patient with cholestasis secondary to a granulomatous hepatitis attributed to tuberculosis. Lipoprotein agarose gel electrophoresis and gradient gel electrophoresis were performed for the detection of LpX. The liver function tests, electrolytes, lipid profile and bile acids were also determined. An
