PURPOSE: To investigate the role of mast cells in the induction of endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU).
METHODS: We previously showed that the mean mast cell number in the anterior uvea was greatest for Lewis rats, lowest for Brown Norway (BN) rats, and intermediate for LBNF1 rats. In the current experiment, we assessed the time of onset and severity of EIU in these three rat strains. We then studied changes in mast cell numbers in the anterior uvea during the induction period of EIU.

In this study, experimental allergic uveitis (EAU) in guinea pigs was induced by an injection of bovine serum albumin (BSA) into the vitreous after having pre-immunized them intradermally with BSA plus incomplete Freund adjuvant, and the effect of superoxide dismutase (SOD) on EAU was observed. This study was based on anti-toxoplasma serotitres obtained from 80 normal healthy adults and 103 consecutive patients with anterior, posterior and panuveitis over a 42 month period. Granulomatous uveitis has infrequently been described as a manifestation of the autoimmune phenomena of multiple sclerosis (MS). The authors describe six cases of anterior granulomatous uveitis in patients with MS. All six patients had features of iridocyclitis and three patients had features of periphlebitis, which were suggestive of granulomatous disease. A previously healthy woman developed acute anicteric hepatitis which slowly resolved, though bilateral anterior uveitis then appeared. No other cause than an occupational exposure to trichloroethylene was found, and rechallenge by resuming work has led to a transient increase in serum alkaline phosphatase. Both manifestations may constitute a rare systemic reaction to trichloroethylene.

We determined whether a positive test for antinuclear antibodies correlated with uveitis only in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) or whether they also represented a serologic marker for isolated idiopathic chronic uveitis in children. We conclude that the immunopathogenesis of uveitis associated with JRA is different from that of idiopathic chronic uveitis.

On the basis of clinical findings and fluorescein angiography the authors diagnosed Harada's disease in a 30-year-old Caucasian woman. A drastic deterioration occurred under treatment with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents. Another cause of the uveitis was looked for and a reactive serology for lues was found in the blood and the cerebrospinal fluid. The severe inflammation was then treated successfully with high doses of penicillin, intravenously administered; visual acuity also improved as a result this treatment. The differential diagnosis of the two conditions is discussed.
