We histopathologically examined gonads and chemically determined organotin compounds in tissues of the ivory shell, Babylonia japonica. Imposex (a superimposition of male-type genital organs on females) occurred in approximately 80-90% of B. japonica specimens that we examined, with the penis and vas deferens both well developed. We describe a patient with a 46,XY karyotype, ambiguous external genitalia and partial 17a-hydroxylase deficiency in whom we performed a light microscopic study of the gonads and genital ducts. The right and left testes and epididymides were hypoplastic whereas the right vas deferens was normal, the left one was atretic and a left infundibular remnant was also present, which could be due to a concomitant deficiency in testicular secretions in the early stages of embryonic development or to the possibility of receptor insensitivity for testicular hormones or to a concomitant gonadal dysgenesis.

A healthy 5-year-old boy presented with two palpable masses in the right hemiscrotum. An examination also showed a palpable mass in the left groin. During surgery, he was found to have right-sided biorchism and a left groin nodule attached to the left vas deferens and spermatic cord. The nodule was excised and histologic examination showed the presence of persistent Mullerian structures. A chromosome analysis showed the normal male karyotype. Both conditions have been previously reported, but this is the first report of both conditions occurring in the same patient.

A 74-year-old man with a right inguinal hernia since 15 years was admitted because of inguinal pain and enlarged ipsilateral testis. We developed a cup-shaped silicone-dacron prosthesis that may be used as a sperm reservoir. Spermatozoa aspirated from this reservoir and stored as pellets in liquid nitrogen for 6 weeks induced pregnancies and normal births in 50 per cent of inseminated cows. Because of aplasia or long stenosis of the vas deferens 26 prostheses were implanted upon the epididymis in 14 patients. Percutaneous aspirations up to 7 months postsurgery showed 0.3 to 105 million spermatozoa the quality and quantity of which decreased with time. Insemination of patients' wives has not resulted in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Intraabdominal testes represent less than 10% of cryptorchid testicles, and yet, they are the most challenging to correct. In the last 15 years, the two-stage Fowler-Stephens orchidopexy has gained popularity. The traditional approach includes laparoscopic or open clipping of the testicular vessels (first stage) and open inguinal orchidopexy (second stage).
