Distribution of acetylcholine and catecholamine neurons in the cat brainstem: a choline acetyltransferase and tyrosine hydroxylase immunohistochemical study.

The distribution of acetylcholine neurons in the brainstem of the cat was studied by choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunohistochemistry and compared to that of catecholamine neurons examined in the same or adjacent sections by tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohistochemistry. The largest group of ChAT-positive (+) neurons was located in the lateral pontomesencephalic tegmentum within the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus and the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus rostrally and within the parabrachial nuclei and locus coeruleus nucleus more caudally. TH+ neurons were found to be coextensive and i

Intense noise exposure alters peripheral vestibular structures and physiology.

The otolith organs play a critical role in detecting linear acceleration and gravity to control posture and balance. Some afferents that innervate these structures can be activated by sound and are at risk for noise overstimulation. A previous report demonstrated that noise exposure can abolish vestibular short-latency evoked potential (VsEP) responses and damage calyceal terminals. However, the stimuli that were used to elicit responses were weaker than those established in previous studies and may have been insufficient to elicit VsEP responses in noise-exposed animals. The goal of this stud

Medical and Nonstroke Neurologic Causes of Acute, Continuous Vestibular Symptoms.

Most patients with the acute vestibular syndrome (AVS) have vestibular neuritis or stroke or, in the setting of trauma, a posttraumatic vestibular cause. Some medical and nonstroke causes of the AVS must also be considered. Multiple sclerosis is the most common diagnosis in this group. Other less common causes include cerebellar masses, inflammation and infection, mal de debarquement, various toxins, Wernicke disease, celiac-related dizziness, and bilateral vestibulopathy. Finally, there may be unmasking of prior posterior circulation events by various physiologic alterations such as alteratio

Ocular lateropulsion as a central oculomotor sign in acute vestibular syndrome is not posturally dependent.

Horizontal conjugate gaze deviation (h-CGD) in acute vestibular syndrome (AVS) may be detected clinically or radiographically. While upright clinical ocular lateropulsion (OL) predicts central lesions, supine radiographic h-CGD does not. We sought to investigate the cause for this discordance by comparing upright to supine OL in AVS. We prospectively recorded clinical and radiographic h-CGD in 17 AVS patients. Horizontal eye position after brief eyelid closure was tested clinically following postural shifts. Radiographic h-CGD was assessed on axial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computeri

Vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) in patients with auditory neuropathy: Auditory neuropathy or audiovestibular neuropathy?

CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that isolated auditory or vestibular involvement is unlikely and in fact audiovestibular neuropathy can better explain auditory neuropathy. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate saccule and related neural pathways in auditory neuropathy patients. METHODS: Three males and five females diagnosed with auditory neuropathy were included in this prospective study. Patients' ages ranged from 21 to 45 years with a mean age of 28.6 ± 8.1 years and the history of disease was between 4 and 19 years. A group of 30 normal subjects served as the control gr

Lesion site in idiopathic bilateral vestibulopathy: a galvanic vestibular-evoked myogenic potential study.

CONCLUSION: The result suggests that patients with idiopathic bilateral vestibulopathy may have nerve lesions when the inferior nerve system is affected, while the inferior vestibular nerve system may be spared. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the lesion site in idiopathic bilateral vestibulopathy, an acquired bilateral vestibulopathy of unknown cause. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two 75-year-old males diagnosed with idiopathic bilateral vestibulopathy were enrolled. Both showed absent or highly decreased responses on the caloric test on both sides. They underwent vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP)

Opsoclonus Following Downbeat Nystagmus in Absence of Visual Fixation in Multiple System Atrophy: Modulation and Mechanisms.

We report atypical opsoclonus in a patient with multiple system atrophy and propose a mechanism based on the patterns of modulation by visual, vestibular, and saccadic and vergence stimulation. Firstly, the 6-Hz opsoclonus mostly in the vertical plane occurred only after the development of downbeat nystagmus in darkness without visual fixation. Even after a substantial build-up, visual suppression of the opsoclonus was immediate and complete. Furthermore, the latency for re-emergence of opsoclonus in darkness was greater when the duration of preceding visual fixation was longer. Secondly, the

Cerebellar Degeneration Increases Visual Influence on Dynamic Estimates of Verticality.

Our perception of verticality relies on combining sensory information from multiple sources. Neuronal recordings in animals implicate the cerebellum in the process, yet disease of the human cerebellum was not found to affect this perception. Here we show that a perceptual disturbance of verticality is indeed present in people with a genetically determined and pure form of cerebellar degeneration (spinocerebellar ataxia type 6; SCA 6), but is only revealed under dynamic visual conditions. Participants were required to continuously orient a visually displayed bar to vertical while the bar angle

Vestibular neuritis affects both superior and inferior vestibular nerves.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the profiles of afferent dysfunction in a cross section of patients with acute vestibular neuritis using tests of otolith and semicircular canal function sensitive to each of the 5 vestibular end organs. METHODS: Forty-three patients fulfilling clinical criteria for acute vestibular neuritis were recruited between 2010 and 2016 and studied within 10 days of symptom onset. Otolith function was evaluated with air-conducted cervical and bone-conducted ocular/vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and the subjective visual horizontal test. Canal-plane video head impulse

A 1-year follow-up study with C-VEMPs, O-VEMPs and video head impulse testing in vestibular neuritis.

The aim of this paper was to evaluate prospectively, in a group of patients affected by VN, a diagnostic protocol employing C-VEMPs, O-VEMPs and vHIT together. The diagnosis of vestibular neurolabyrinthitis was based on the clinical history, absence of associated auditory or neurological symptoms, and a neuro-otological examination with an evaluation of lateral semicircular canal function using the Fitzgerald-Hallpike caloric vestibular test and ice test. Our series revealed an incidence of 55% of superior and inferior vestibular neurolabyrinthitis, 40% of superior vestibular neurolabyrinthiti

Temporal dynamics of Purkinje cell-intrinsic excitability governs cerebellar systems consolidation.

Systems consolidation reorganizes newly encoded memories from cortical networks into downstream circuits. Although synaptic mechanisms are extensively characterized, the role of neuronal intrinsic excitability (IE) in this process remains relatively unexplored. Here, we utilized a cerebellum-dependent learning model to investigate the causal link between neuronal IE and memory consolidation. The optogenetic manipulation of Purkinje cells (PCs), the sole output of the cerebellar cortex, identified a crucial 90-min post-learning window during which PC-IE undergoes transient depression. Disruptin

Characterization of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis in 3 cats.

Three young domestic shorthair cats were presented for necropsy with similar histories of slowly progressive visual dysfunction and neurologic deficits. Macroscopic examination of each cat revealed cerebral and cerebellar atrophy, dilated lateral ventricles, and slight brown discoloration of the gray matter. Histologically, there was bilateral loss of neurons within the limbic, motor, somatosensory, visual, and, to a lesser extent, vestibular systems with extensive astrogliosis in the affected regions of all 3 cases. Many remaining neurons and glial cells throughout the entire central nervous

Neuroanatomical substrate for the dorsal light response. I. Differential afferent connections of the lateral lobe of the valvula cerebelli in goldfish (Carassius auratus).

The afferent connections of the lateral lobe of the valvula cerebelli in goldfish were investigated by retrograde labeling with horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Retrogradely labeled neurons were observed ipsilaterally in the lateral nucleus of the valvula and contralaterally in the inferior olivary nucleus after HRP injection into all parts of the lateral valvula. The valvulopetal projections from these nuclei were topographically arranged. After HRP injection confined to the rostral half of the lateral valvula, labeled neurons were also found ipsilaterally in the octavolateral and trigeminal cel

The potassium channel subunit KV3.1b is localized to somatic and axonal membranes of specific populations of CNS neurons.

Potassium channels play major roles in the regulation of many aspects of neuronal excitability. These channels are particularly well suited for such multiplicity of roles since there is a large diversity of channel types. This diversity contributes to the ability of specific neurons (and possibly different regions of the same neuron) to respond uniquely to a given input. Neuronal integration depends on the local response of spatially segregated inputs to the cell and the communication of these integration centers with the axon. Therefore, the functional implications of a given set of K+ channe

Distribution of acidic fibroblast growth factor mRNA-expressing neurons in the adult mouse central nervous system.

The distribution of acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF) mRNA-expressing neurons was studied throughout the adult mouse central nervous system (CNS) with in situ hybridization histochemistry using a radiolabelled synthetic oligodeoxynucleotide probe complementary to the mRNA of human aFGF. We report here a widespread distribution of aFGF mRNA in several defined functional systems of the adult mouse brain, whereby the highest levels of aFGF mRNA were found in large somatomotor neurons in the nuclei of the oculomotor, trochlear, abducens, and hypoglossal nerves; in the motoneurons of the ventr

TREM2 contributes to central sensitization through PI3K/Akt/mTOR-mediated autophagic dysfunction in a rat model of vestibular migraine.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular migraine (VM) is a disabling neurological disorder where neuroinflammation and central sensitization constitute the core pathological mechanisms. Physiological levels of autophagy help maintain cellular homeostasis and regulate neuroinflammation, whereas autophagic dysfunction is closely associated with exacerbated neuroinflammatory responses. Although accumulating evidence has confirmed the presence of robust autophagic dysfunction in VM, the specific role of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2), a key microglial receptor, in this process remains to

[Etiology of the rigidity of axial muscles of the trunk in Moersh-Woltman syndrome].

A woman patient suffering from the rigid man syndrome (RMS) is described. Analyzing the clinical characteristics of the case, the anatomophysiological features of segmental innervation and suprasegmental control of the activity of axial muscles of the body, the authors suggest that the phenomenon of axial muscle rigidity is caused by the hyperreactivity of vestibular and reticular neurons stimulating via vestibulo- and reticulospinal fibers the motoneurons of the medial plates of the anterior cornua of the spinal cord (the segmental representation of axial muscles). The pathogenetic similarity

Familial cerebellar ataxia with hydrocephalus in bull mastiffs.

A family of bull mastiff pups in which 16 animals developed certain neurological signs is described. It is probable that the disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. Clinical and pathological examination of six animals revealed ataxia, behavioural abnormalities and a visual defect associated with symmetrical lesions in the cerebellar nuclei, lateral vestibular nucleus and inferior colliculus together with a communicating hydrocephalus. The cerebellar lesions consisted of vacuolation, gliosis and axonal degeneration. Evidence for both axonal and oligodendroglial abnormalities was
