Forebrain circuits underlying the social modulation of vocal communication signals.

Across vertebrate species, signalers alter the structure of their communication signals based on the social context. For example, male Bengalese finches produce faster and more stereotyped songs when directing song to females (female-directed [FD] song) than when singing in isolation (undirected [UD] song), and such changes have been found to increase the attractiveness of a male's song. Despite the importance of such social influences, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the social modulation of communication signals. To this end, we analyzed differences in immediate early gene (E

Parent-offspring communication in the Nile crocodile Crocodylus niloticus: do newborns' calls show an individual signature?

Young Nile crocodiles Crocodylus niloticus start to produce calls inside the egg and carry on emitting sounds after hatching. These vocalizations elicit maternal care and influence the behaviour of other juveniles. In order to investigate the acoustic structure of these calls, focusing on a possible individual signature, we have performed acoustic analyses on 400 calls from ten young crocodiles during the first 4 days after hatching. Calls have a complex acoustic structure and are strongly frequency modulated. We assessed the differences between the calls of the individuals. We found a weak in

Acoustic, auditory, and morphological divergence in three species of neotropical frog.

Advertisement calls, auditory tuning, and larynx and ear morphology were examined in 3 neotropical frogs, Hyla microcephala, H. phlebodes and H. ebraccata, H. microcephala has the highest call dominant frequency (6.068 kHz) and basilar papilla tuning (5.36 kHz). H. phlebodes and H. ebraccata calls have lower dominant frequencies (3.832 and 3.197 kHz respectively) and basilar papilla tuning (2.79 and 2.56 kHz). The primary call notes of H. ebraccata are longer (181.6 ms) than those of H. microcephala (95.5 ms) or H. phlebodes (87.3 ms). Morphometric analysis suggests that temporal call features

[Role of species-specific acoustic signals in the "homing" orientation of intact and olfactory deprived kittens].

Vocal responses of lactating cats were recorded and used to investigate home orientation in 1-30 days old kittens. Two types of species-specific acoustic signals were chosen and used in acoustically-guided homing. Type 1 comprised fricative signals below 1.5 kHz of low intensity and long duration. Type 2 comprised intense tonal calls with 2-4 resonant frequency components below 4 kHz. Presentation of tape-recorded signals 1 and 2 through the speaker placed into the home site increased the ability of the kittens to return to the nest. Zn-induced anosmia eliminated home orientation. Presenting o

The role of brain norepinephrine in clonidine suppression of isolation-induced distress in the domestic chick.

Distress vocalizations (DV) induced by social isolation were measured in 1-day-old domestic chicks after intracerebroventricular injections of drugs believed to exert their effects through the noradrenergic system. The alpha-adrenoreceptor agonist clonidine reliably suppressed DV rates at doses low as 0.08 micrograms. When given alone, phentolamine, phenoxybenzamine, propranolol, sotalol, and yohimbine (adrenoreceptor antagonists) did not reliably alter DV rates at doses that were not toxic. The clonidine DV suppression was reliably reversed by yohimbine (1.75 micrograms), but by none of the o

Early-onset of social communication and locomotion activity in F2 pups of a valproic acid-induced mouse model of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneously pervasive developmental disorder that usually occurs before 3 years old. Animal models of psychiatric disorders are essential for elucidating the underlying preclinical neural mechanisms. Mice that are prenatally exposed to valproic acid (VPA, F1) are widely used as an ASD model. Epigenetics has recently been suggested as a contributor to ASD etiology with the hypothesis that epigenetic marks can be transgenerationally inherited. Previous studies have indicated that autism-like behavioral phenotypes detected in F1 VPA mice transgenetically ap

Sexual Behaviour of the Spectral Tarsier (Tarsius spectrum) in Captivity.

Tarsius spectrum is a primate species endemic to Sulawesi. Populations of the species have decreased due to habitat destruction and hunting. The sexual behaviour of T. bancanus and T. syrichta are known, but that of T. spectrum has not been reported until recently. The aim of this research was to study the sexual behaviour of T. spectrum in captivity. We observed 3 pairs of T. spectrum at the captive breeding facility of the IPB Primate Research Centre for 9 months using focal animal sampling. We showed that principal courtship behaviours were scent marking (36.7%) and genital marking for fema

Orthotopic lung cancer murine model by nonoperative transbronchial approach.

PURPOSE: The aim of this work was to establish a novel orthotopic human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) murine xenograft model by a nonsurgical, transbronchial approach. DESCRIPTION: Male athymic nude mice and human NSCLC cell lines, including A549, H460, and H520 were used. Under direct visualization of the vocal cords, a 23-gauge blunt-tip slightly curved metal catheter was introduced into the trachea to the bronchus, and 2.5×10(5) tumor cells mixed with Matrigel (BD Biosciences, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) were administered into the lung. Mice were monitored using weekly microcomputed

Nicotine attenuates DOI-induced head-twitch response in mice: implications for Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS), a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder, is characterized by motor and vocal tics. Preliminary clinical studies indicate possible therapeutic benefits of nicotine in the treatment of Tourette's syndrome (TS). It has been proposed that twitches of the head in mice or twitches of head and shoulders in rats following administration of the selective 5HT(2A/C) agonist DOI (1-)2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl-2-aminopropane, can serve as an animal model of tics in TS. In this study, the effects of acute and chronic administration of nicotine on DOI-induced head twitch response (HTR) in

[Genetic behavioral aspects of agricultural animals].

This paper reviews some experimental methods used in the study of genetic fixed behaviour, some examples of investigations in farm animals as well as some results of the author's studies on the emotionality in pigs are given. Many investigations have been made on the estimation of heritability of behaviour patterns in cattle, pigs, poultry and dogs. Behaviour patterns such as temperament, aggressiveness, and nervousness showed relatively high h2-values; other behaviours like trainability, emotionality, and pre-laying showed relatively low values. Selection experiments were carried out in poult

Effects of lesions of globus pallidus on species-typical display behavior of squirrel monkeys.

In a study of brain mechanisms underlying species-typical communication, systematic testing has been conducted on the effects of cerebral lesions on the mirror display of squirrel monkeys. The mirror display is a highly predictable variation of a naturally occurring display used by male squirrel monkeys in a show of aggression, in courtship and in greeting. Of the 5 features of the display, vocalization, thigh-spreading and forward thrusts of the erect phallus are the major and most regularly occurring manifestations, constituting the so-called trump display. Testing has been performed on more

Social trills of the pipistrelle bat (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) are quieter than their echolocation calls, but have a greater range.

Under natural conditions, the sound pressure level of social trills and echolocation calls of pipistrelle bats was measured as peak equivalent sound pressure level (peSPL) with the aim of estimating the range of the signals. Thirty-eight echolocation calls and 55 social trills, whose distance from the microphone was known, were evaluated. The social trills were approximately 8 dB quieter than the echolocation calls but had a significantly greater range because of their lower call frequency. Based on the American National Standards Institute/Acoustical Society of America [ANSI/ASA (2024) S1.26-

Identification and classification of repeated whistle types from free-ranging rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis).

Acoustic communication is vital for marine mammals. Many delphinids rely on frequency-modulated tonal signals – known as whistles – used during social communication. Among these, individually distinctive “signature whistles” have been extensively studied in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) over the past 60 years. These stereotyped whistles convey individual identity and motivational information. Recent studies have identified similar stereotyped whistles in other delphinids, including a rehabilitated rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis). However, the function, occurrence, time–fre

Frontal-auditory cortical interactions and sensory prediction during vocal production in marmoset monkeys.

The control of speech and vocal production involves the calculation of error between the intended vocal output and the resulting auditory feedback. This model has been supported by evidence that the auditory cortex (AC) is suppressed immediately before and during vocal production yet remains sensitive to differences between vocal output and altered auditory feedback. This suppression has been suggested to be the result of top-down signals about the intended vocal output, potentially originating from frontal cortical (FC) areas. However, whether FC is the source of suppressive and predictive si

Large-Scale Mapping of Vocalization-Related Activity in the Functionally Diverse Nuclei in Rat Posterior Brainstem.

The identity and location of vocalization pattern generating (VPG) circuits in mammals is debated. Based on physiological experiments, investigators suggested anterior brainstem circuits in the reticular formation, and anatomic evidence suggested the nucleus retroambiguus (NRA) in the posterior brainstem, or combinations of these sites as the putative mammalian VPG. Additionally, vocalization loudness is a critical factor in acoustic communication. However, many of the underlying neuronal mechanisms are still unknown. Here, we evoked calls by stimulation of the periaqueductal gray in anestheti

In utero exposure to cannabidiol disrupts select early-life behaviors in a sex-specific manner.

Cannabidiol (CBD), one of the main components of cannabis, is generally considered safe. CBD crosses the placenta and its use during pregnancy is steadily increasing, the impact of gestational CBD's effects on prenatal life and neurodevelopment are poorly understood. Here, we combined behavioral approaches and deep learning analysis to assess the sex-dependent neonatal behavior of CBD exposed progeny. Gestating C57BL6/J dams were exposed daily with vehicle or CBD (3 mg/Kg, s.c.), from gestational day 5 to 18. Body weight, pup ultrasound vocalizations (USVs, PND 10) and homing behavior (PND 13)

Manipulations of sensory experiences during development reveal mechanisms underlying vocal learning biases in zebra finches.

Biological predispositions in learning can bias and constrain the cultural evolution of social and communicative behaviors (e.g., speech and birdsong), and lead to the emergence of behavioral and cultural "universals." For example, surveys of laboratory and wild populations of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) document consistent patterning of vocal elements ("syllables") with respect to their acoustic properties (e.g., duration, mean frequency). Furthermore, such universal patterns are also produced by birds that are experimentally tutored with songs containing randomly sequenced syllables

Five members of a mixed-sex group of bottlenose dolphins share a stereotyped whistle contour in addition to maintaining their individually distinctive signature whistles.

Most commonly, animal communication systems are driven by shared call repertoires, with some individual distinctiveness encoded as a byproduct of voice cues. We provide evidence that bottlenose dolphins produce both individually distinctive whistles, and a shared whistle type. A stereotyped whistle contour (termed the group whistle) is shared by five bottlenose dolphins that have lived, worked, and traveled together for at least 21 years. These five dolphins are members of a group of eight dolphins that work as a specialized team for the Navy Marine Mammal Program. Each dolphin is routinely re

An ex vivo porcine model of the anterior glottoplasty for voice feminization surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Perceived gender identity is correctly assigned when a combination of physical and vocal attributes become congruent. Several voice feminization procedures have gained popularity, but current evidence of their impact on vocal feminization is limited to case series. This study establishes an ex vivo porcine phonatory model to evaluate the ideal extent of anterior glottic web formation in relation to frequency elevation and airway patency. METHODS: Six fresh porcine larynges were obtained and fitted with arytenoid adduction sutures. Compressed air was passed through the larynges, and
