Assessing the feasibility and acceptability of online measurements of exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in children with preschool wheeze: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Investigating airway inflammation and pathology in wheezy preschool children is both technically and ethically challenging. Identifying and validating non-invasive tests would be a huge clinical advance. Real-time analysis of exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in adults is established, however, the feasibility of this non-invasive method in young children remains undetermined. AIM: To determine the feasibility and acceptability of obtaining breath samples from preschool children by means of real-time mass spectrometry analysis of exhaled VOCs. METHODS: Breath samples from …

Application of a compact trickle-bed bioreactor for the removal of odor and volatile organic compounds emitted from a wastewater treatment plant.

A compact trickle-bed bioreactor (CTBB) was tested for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) present in the exhaust air of a wastewater treatment plant. At gas-flow rates varying between 2.0 and 30.0 m3/h and for specific pollutant loads up to 20 g/(m3·h), removal efficiencies for H2S and VOC were >95%. The CTBB was designed for a maximum H2S concentration of ∼200 ppm and removal efficiencies >97% were noticed. VOC concentrations were in the range of 25-240 ppmv and the removal efficiency was in the range of 85-99%. Possible consequences of an excessive p…

Probabilistic approach to estimating indoor air concentrations of chlorinated volatile organic compounds from contaminated groundwater: a case study in San Antonio, Texas.

This paper describes a probabilistic model, based on the Johnson-Ettinger algorithm, developed to characterize the current and historic exposure to tricholorethylene (TCE) and tetrachlorethylene (PCE) in indoor air from plumes of groundwater contamination emanating from the former Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. We estimate indoor air concentration, house by house, in 30 101 homes and compare the estimated concentrations with measured values in a small subset of homes. We also compare two versions of the Johnson-Ettinger model: one used by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Response of fine particulate matter to emission changes of oxides of nitrogen and anthropogenic volatile organic compounds in the eastern United States.

A three-dimensional chemical transport model (Particulate Matter Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions [PMCAMx]) is used to investigate changes in fine particle (PM2.5) concentrations in response to 50% emissions changes of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during July 2001 and January 2002 in the eastern United States. The reduction of NOx emissions by 50% during the summer results in lower average oxidant levels and lowers PM2.5 (8% on average), mainly because of reductions of sulfate (9-11%), nitrate (45-58%), and ammonium (7-11%). The or…

Preliminary study of volatile organic compounds from breath and stomach tissue by means of solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

The determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled air and stomach tissue emission for the detection of cancer has been investigated. Solid phase microextraction (SPME) was used for sample preconcentration. The method presented in this paper showed satisfactory precision (RSD below 11%), linearity in the range of 2.8-136 ppb and limit of detection ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 ppb. The breath and emission from cancer tissue were collected from three patients with stomach cancer. Acetone, carbon disulfide, 2-propanol, ethyl alcohol and ethyl acetate were identified in breath and tissue…

In situ modification of herbivore-induced plant odors: a novel approach to study the attractiveness of volatile organic compounds to parasitic wasps.

Many parasitic wasps (parasitoids) exploit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by herbivore-infested plants in order to locate their hosts, but it remains largely unknown which specific compounds within the volatile blends elicit the attractiveness to parasitoids. One way of studying the importance of specific VOCs is to test the attractiveness of odor blends from which certain compounds have been emitted. We used this approach by testing the attraction of naive and experienced females of the two parasitoids Cotesia marginiventris and Microplitis rufiventris to partially altered volatile…

Respiratory symptoms and peak expiratory flow in children with asthma in relation to volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath and ambient air.

Indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been associated with asthma, but there is little epidemiologic work on ambient exposures, and no data on relationships between respiratory health and exhaled breath VOCs, which is a biomarker of VOC exposure. We recruited 26 Hispanic children with mild asthma in a Los Angeles community with high VOC levels near major freeways and trucking routes. Two dropped out, three had invalid peak expiratory flow (PEF) or breath VOC data, leaving 21. Children filled out symptom diaries and performed PEF maneuvers daily, November 1999-January 2000. We aimed to …

Chemical and mutagenic analysis of volatile organic compounds in Raleigh air samples at three different elevations before, during, and after Hurricane Gordon.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were collected and measured at a television tower 10 km southeast of downtown Raleigh, North Carolina at three different levels (Surface, < 1 m; Mid, 240 m; and Top, 433 m) during the summer and fall of 1994. The combined presence of ozone, arenes, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) suggested possible nitration of arenes during atmospheric mixing. Air samples, therefore, were collected using XAD-filled canisters at each level on the tower prior to, during, and after Hurricane Gordon. Collected air samples were Soxhlet extracted and analyzed with the Salmonella typhimur…

Effects of drying time on physicochemical properties and volatile organic compounds of pork jerky revealed by GC-IMS and interpretable machine learning.

Drying time affects dehydration, color development, Maillard reactions, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in pork jerky. Pork jerky was dried at 80 °C for 4-6 h, with marinated undried samples as the RAW control. Physicochemical properties, free amino acids, and volatile fingerprints were evaluated. Gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) detected 53 volatile signals, whose profiles changed markedly during drying. Support vector regression (SVR) and extra trees regression (ETR) were developed to predict moisture content, absorbance at 420 nm, fluorescence intensity, and L*, a…

Boosted Oxygen Vacancies and Lattice Oxygen Reactivity by Cobalt-Oxygen-Manganese Asymmetric Sites in Cryptomelane for Photoactivated Abatement of Volatile Organic Compounds.

Catalytic activity is influenced by the local coordination environment. Cryptomelane-type octahedral molecular sieve (OMS-2) catalysts doped via K+ substitution in the tunnels rarely exhibit photoactivation effects for volatile organic compound (VOC) abatement. We incorporated Co ions into the framework of OMS-2, not by replacing K+ in the tunnels, thereby facilitating the formation of Co-O-Mn asymmetric sites. Engineering Co-incorporated OMS-2 efficiently promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies, the facile release of lattice oxygen, the reducibility of the catalysts, and a low formation e

Single-Atom Cu Anchored on a UiO-66 Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensor for Trace and Rapid Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) serve as critical biomarkers in exhaled breath for early-stage cancer patients, and their rapid, trace-level detection holds marked implications for cancer screening. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology demonstrates strong potential for trace VOC gas detection due to its ultra-high sensitivity and immunity to water interference. However, while surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-free semiconductor substrates offer superior spectral stability and selectivity, their sensitivity toward VOC detection remains suboptimal. This study introduces a novel se…

[The influence of dietary pattern on the production of volatile organic compounds in patients with hydrogen-producing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrome].

Antibacterial therapy of the small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is not effective enough and has a high relapse rate after treatment. Diet is a well-modifiable factor that plays a major role in shaping the composition, diversity, metabolic activity and stability of the intestinal microbiota. Intestinal bacteria ferment undigested food residues to form species-specific carbon-chain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The aim of this research was to study possible correlations between dietary variables and the level of stool VOCs in patients with hydrogen-producing SIBO. Material and meth…

Differences in the Determination of Volatile Organic Compounds between Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat. and Chrysanthemum indicum L. (Wild Chrysanthemum) by HS-GC-IMS.

Chrysanthemums and wild chrysanthemums are herbs with high application value. As edible plants of the Asteraceae family, they have good antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties. Chrysanthemums and wild chrysanthemums contain a wide variety of volatile organic compounds, and these volatile components are the main factors contributing to the flavor differences. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the volatile components of holland chrysanthemum from Bozhou, Anhui Province, Chu-chrysanthemum from Chuzhou, Anhui Province, Gong-chrysanthemums from Huangshan, Anhui Provin…
