Keeping the body in mind: Development of the Transdiagnostic Global Impression-Somatic Symptoms and Signs (TGI-3S) scale.

BACKGROUND: It is well-established that mental illness is associated with excess and premature mortality. Consequently, the assessment of physical health should be routine in the evaluation of persons living with mental disorders. Herein, we introduce the development of a global instrument to assess physical health status in persons with mental disorders. METHODS: Following the development of the Transdiagnostic Global Impression-Psychopathology (TGI-P) scale, a novel scale of physical health status, the Transdiagnostic Global Impression-Somatic Symptoms and Signs (TGI-3S), was created using

The Relative Contribution of Cochlear Synaptopathy and Reduced Inhibition to Age-Related Hearing Impairment for People With Normal Audiograms.

Older people often show auditory temporal processing deficits and speech-in-noise intelligibility difficulties even when their audiogram is clinically normal. The causes of such problems remain unclear. Some studies have suggested that for people with normal audiograms, age-related hearing impairments may be due to a cognitive decline, while others have suggested that they may be caused by cochlear synaptopathy. Here, we explore an alternative hypothesis, namely that age-related hearing deficits are associated with decreased inhibition. For human adults (N = 30) selected to cover a reasonably

Jargonaphasia as a disconnection syndrome: A study combining white matter electrical stimulation and disconnectome mapping.

BACKGROUND: In jargonaphasia, speech is fluent but meaningless. While neuropsychological evaluation may distinguish a neologistic component characterised by non-word production and a semantic component where pronounced words are real but speech is senseless, how this relates to the underlying white matter anatomy is debated. OBJECTIVE: To identify white matter pathways causally involved in jargonaphasia. METHODS: We retrospectively screened the intraoperative brain mapping data of 571 awake oncological resections using direct cortico-subcortical electrostimulation. Jargonaphasia was induced

Pathways of the inferior frontal occipital fasciculus in overt speech and reading.

In this study, we examined the relationship between tractography-based measures of white matter integrity (ex. fractional anisotropy [FA]) from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and five reading-related tasks, including rapid automatized naming (RAN) of letters, digits, and objects, and reading of real words and nonwords. Twenty university students with no reported history of reading difficulties were tested on all five tasks and their performance was correlated with diffusion measures extracted through DTI tractography. A secondary analysis using whole-brain Tract-Based Spatial Statistics (TBSS)

The relationship between level of processing and hippocampal-cortical functional connectivity during episodic memory formation in humans.

New episodic memory traces represent a record of the ongoing neocortical processing engaged during memory formation (encoding). Thus, during encoding, deep (semantic) processing typically establishes more distinctive and retrievable memory traces than does shallow (perceptual) processing, as assessed by later episodic memory tests. By contrast, the hippocampus appears to play a processing-independent role in encoding, because hippocampal lesions impair encoding regardless of level of processing. Here, we clarified the neural relationship between processing and encoding by examining hippocampal

Strongyloidiasis: a review of the evidence for Australian practitioners.

OBJECTIVE: To summarise the available evidence concerning the prevalence, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and management of strongyloidiasis in Northern Australia. METHODS: We searched Medline, Clinical Evidence and the Cochrane Library using MeSH terms and text words 'strongyloides OR strongyloidiasis'. For Australian studies we included text words '(parasite* OR parasitic OR helminth*) AND Australia*'. We examined references contained in retrieved studies or identified from direct contact with researchers. Studies consistent with our objective that described their methods were eligible f

Auditory attention influences trajectories of symbol-speech sound learning in children with and without dyslexia.

The acquisition of letter-speech sound correspondences is a fundamental process underlying reading development, one that could be influenced by several linguistic and domain-general cognitive factors. In the current study, we mimicked the first steps of this process by examining behavioral trajectories of audiovisual associative learning in 110 7- to 12-year-old children with and without dyslexia. Children were asked to learn the associations between eight novel symbols and native speech sounds in a brief training and subsequently read words and pseudowords written in the artificial orthograph

Abnormalities of pulmonary function tests after marrow transplantation predict nonrelapse mortality.

To determine whether pulmonary function test (PFT) results after marrow transplantation were predictive of nonrelapse mortality, a review was made of prospective, nonrandomized PFT results for association with nonrelapse mortality by log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards modeling. The setting was a tertiary referral center. The patients were all marrow recipients who performed PFT between Days 60 and 120 after marrow transplantation between July 1, 1983 and December 31, 1990 (n = 906). At 3 mo after transplantation, the mean values for total lung capacity (TLC) and diffusing capacity decr

Serum uric acid levels and longitudinal change in cognitive function in older adults: a sex-stratified population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Serum uric acid (SUA) has been linked to cognitive function, but sex-specific associations remain unclear. Biological differences in SUA levels between sexes, driven by hormonal and renal factors, highlight the importance of sex-stratified analysis. This study examined the association between SUA levels and changes in cognitive function in older adults. METHODS: A total of 11 411 community-dwelling ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly participants, free from dementia at baseline and with valid SUA measurements, were included. The Modified Mini-Mental State Examination (3MS),

Leishmania chagasi antigens recognized in cured visceral leishmaniasis and asymptomatic infection.

Active visceral leishmaniasis is associated with antigen-specific immuno-suppression. However, cured patients develop a cellular immune response associated with resistance to reinfection. Recent studies have identified patients with asymptomatic or subclinical infections, which are also accompanied by an immune response. In order to identify subjects immune to Leishmania chagasi, we performed a skin-test survey in an endemic area in eastern Venezuela. The delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response was assessed in patients cured of visceral leishmaniasis, as well as in their relatives and nei

The impact of cognitive function and depression on postoperative delirium risk in elderly patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a frequent neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by sudden onset, particularly in elderly patients. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between cognitive function, depression status, and the risk of POD in geriatric patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. This prospective cohort study included 100 patients aged 65 years and older who underwent major abdominal surgery. Preoperatively and postoperatively, patients underwent cognitive assessments using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), geriatric depression scale (GDS), three-word reca

Pharmacotherapy in multiple sclerosis-induced cognitive impairment: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) commonly complicated by cognitive impairment. Unfortunately, no medical therapy has been proved to improve cognitive problems in these patients. This meta-analysis investigated the effectiveness of different categories of drugs on the minimal assessment of cognitive function in MS (MACFIMS)-related tasks outcome in MS patients. To this end, a systematic evaluation was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases. Among a total of 128 publications, 31 studies met our inclusion cr

Default mode network deactivation in pediatric temporal lobe epilepsy: Relationship to a working memory task and executive function tests.

OBJECTIVES: Children with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) exhibit executive dysfunction on traditional neuropsychological tests. There is limited evidence of different functional network alterations associated with this clinical executive dysfunction. This study investigates working memory deficits in children with TLE by assessing deactivation of the default mode network (DMN) on functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and the relationship of DMN deactivation with fMRI behavioral findings and neuropsychological test performance. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: fMRI was conducted on 15 children with T

A comparative study of the interaction of alcohol with alpidem, lorazepam and placebo in normal subjects.

Twelve healthy volunteers took part in a double-blind, cross-over comparison of the effects of lorazepam and alpidem on a battery of physiological, psychomotor and subjective tests before and after alcohol. Each subject received each treatment for 8 days and alcohol was given on day 8. Tests were carried out on days 1 and 4 and on day 8 before and after alcohol. Before alcohol the effects of alpidem on most tests were generally similar, but considerably less marked than those seen with lorazepam. There were some interesting differences between the two drugs in the effects on EEG and memory. In

[Silent myocardial ischemia. Status in 1992].

Silent myocardial ischaemia is found in 5% of a completely symptom-free population, in 30% of patients with a history of myocardial infarction and in 60 to 100% of patients with stable or unstable angina pectoris. Only one fifth to one quarter of episodes of myocardial ischaemia is associated with angina pectoris which means that 75% to 80% of episodes take a silent course. Episodes of myocardial ischaemia take place at lower heart rates than during exercise test and they are induced by common, everyday activities of the patient. So far it is not known why some episodes of myocardial ischaemia

Association between glymphatic dysfunction and neurocognitive decline in patients with frontal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: The glymphatic system is essential for the maintenance of brain homeostasis. It may be impaired in patients with epilepsy, but its association with neurocognitive function remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the association between changes in the glymphatic system and neurocognitive function in individuals diagnosed with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). METHODS: This retrospective case-control research engaged a group of patients with FLE and age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy volunteers. All participants were subjected to extensive neurocognitive assessments,
