This study evaluated the effectiveness of a consultative workplace risk assessment team in reducing the rate and severity of injury among cleaners within a 600-bed hospital. The successful treatment of the painful neuroma remains an elusive surgical goal. This report evaluates one approach to the management of this problem which entails neuroma excision and placement of the proximal end of the nerve away from denervated skin, away from tension, and into a well-vascularized environment: muscle. BACKGROUND: Night and shift work are suspected to cause various adverse effects on health and sleep. Sleep deprivation through shift work is assumed to be compensated on free days. So far it is not clear how different shift systems and shift lengths affect sleep structure on work and free days. Especially working night shifts disrupts the circadian rhythm but also extended working hours (12h) might affect sleep characteristics. The multiple regression equation predicting lung function values for a study population of South African Blacks is compared with equations predicting normal values for Blacks elsewhere, and in almost all cases is found to predict higher values. This is so despite the study population's high prevalence of respiratory disease and long history of exposure to crocidolite asbestos dust. This anomalous finding is explored in terms of some problems with studies generating normal values. In particular, the confounding effect of social class status on ethnic determinants of lung function is considered.

Little is known about predictors of duration of work disability (DOD). This cohort study of 433 workers' compensation claimants estimated DOD for job, injury, and demographic factors during consecutive disability phases using Cox regression analysis. DOD was calculated from administrative records.
