[Genetic background of dyslexia and dysgraphy in children].

The review is devoted to one of the current problems of pediatric neurology - reading and writing disorders in children as part of a partial developmental disorder. With the development of neuroscience, the paradigm of «brain damage» in the understanding of a number of pathological conditions was replaced by the concept of «evolutionary neurology». The dominance of the ontogenetic approach caused the appearance of a new section in ICD-11 - «Neurodevelopmental disorders». Twenty-one genes associated with the acquisition of reading and writing skills have been identified. Modern studies demonstr…

The Genealogy of Dementia Praecox I: Signs and Symptoms of Delusional Psychoses From 1880 to 1900.

We can trace, with high congruence, the clinical syndromes of depression and mania as described over the 20th century in psychiatric textbooks back to 1880 and to the earliest writing of Kraepelin published in 1883. However, this is not the case for Kraepelin's 2 delusional syndromes central to his overall nosology: Dementia Paranoides (later paranoid schizophrenia) and Paranoia. A detailed examination of 28 textbook descriptions of delusional psychoses from 1880 to 1900 reveals a diverse and partially overlapping set of syndromes with an admixture of symptoms and signs that would later be con…

Impairment of a parieto-premotor network specialized for handwriting in writer's cramp.

Handwriting with the dominant hand is a highly skilled task singularly acquired in humans. This skill is the isolated deficit in patients with writer's cramp (WC), a form of dystonia with maladaptive plasticity, acquired through intensive and repetitive motor practice. When a skill is highly trained, a motor program is created in the brain to execute the same movement kinematics regardless of the effector used for the task. The task- and effector-specific symptoms in WC suggest that a problem particularly occurs in the brain when the writing motor program is carried out by the dominant hand. I…

Aphemia-like syndrome from a right supplementary motor area lesion.

Lesions in the left supplementary motor area (SMA) can result in a transcortical motor aphasia with nonfluent spontaneous verbal output and relatively preserved repetition. Reading and writing are proportionally affected. We report a patient with an ischemic lesion in the right SMA. He had impaired articulation and normal repetition plus preserved reading and writing, consistent with an aphemia. This patient supports the dissociation of articulatory fluency and linguistic fluency and suggests that both SMAs affect the initiating of articulatory movements required to produce words whereas the l…

Analysis of spelling errors from the 'dyslexic sight words' list.

In this study the spelling errors of the 'Dyslexic Sight Words - DSW' list are analyzed according to the semiological classification. The spelling errors were made by schoolchildren with and without dyslexia. The high number of inaccuracies observed in the writing of the Group with dyslexia (GD) was often related to the complexity of syllabic structures and orthographic irregularity. The syllabic structures, in addition to the consonant-vowel (CV) pattern, often pose challenges for all students as they move through the alphabetic writing phase, early in literacy. This classification provides a…

Hildegard of Bingen (c. 1098-1179) on sleep and dreams in her Causae et curae and Physica: a historical perspective.

Saint Hildegard of Bingen (c. 1098-1179) was a 12th century Benedictine abbess, a visionary, a composer, a poet, a healer, and one of few medieval women who produced treatises on medicine. In her medical writings, Causae et curae and Physica, the abbess described, among other topics, physical functions and mechanisms of sleep, dreams and waking, emphasizing the importance of sleep for the human body. She regarded sleep as both a passive and an active process. Hildegard warned her readers about sleeping too little or too much, evaluated possible causes of insomnia and nightmares, and discussed …

Spoken disagreement is more constructive than written disagreement.

Amid rising global polarization, finding ways to disagree constructively is vital. This paper examines whether the medium of disagreement-sp … etween language and outcomes: receptiveness is a stronger predictor of constructive disagreement in writing than in speech, suggesting people use less receptive language in the very medium in which it may be most effective (i.e., the written medium). A final study suggests that people may misjudge the effects of medium, wrongly believing spoken (versus wr …

FPI Writers Fellowship Special Section: Expanding the Lens in Family Therapy.

The Family Process Institute (FPI) Writers Fellowship supports the development of scholars who will advance systemic theory, research, and clinical practice grounded in a commitment to social justice. In this introduction to the Writers Fellowship special section, I describe the rationale for and history of this FPI initiative and how these eight authors help expand whose perspectives, interests, and voices are included in the family therapy field's knowledge base. I highlight the broader systemic/relational lenses the authors bring to issues and communities that are often individualized or ov

The 'chessboard of healing strategies': A cardiological application.

RATIONALE: The question of how to adaptively cope with chronic illnesses, aging, and other sources of bodily impairment is crucial for patients and clinicians alike, though sometimes overlooked in the focus on biomedical treatment. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine the array of strategies available to patients and their practitioners, to employ in the face of bodily breakdown. METHOD: Co-written by a philosopher and cardiologist, this article uses a detailed case study of a patient suffering a myocardial infarction leading to chronic heart failure, with examples of effective or suboptimal care

150 years ago: First complete removal of the larynx by Theodor Billroth.

This historical vignette celebrates the first total removal of the larynx in humans, performed by Theodor Billroth 150 years ago and stresses the importance of the prior experimental study of laryngeal ablation performed in dogs by Vincent Czerny. A part of the original article, written by his assistant Carl Gussenbauer, is reproduced, to help readers immerse themselves in this operation which opened up new perspectives in the treatment of laryngeal cancer.

Serial position effects in graphemic buffer impairment: An insight into components of orthographic working memory.

This study investigated the nature of graphemic buffer functioning and impairment, through analysis of the spelling impairment shown by GEC, a man with acquired dysgraphia and clear characteristics of graphemic buffer impairment. We discuss GEC's error patterns in relation to different processes of orthographic working memory. This is the first study to show the contribution of these processes in one individual through performance on different spelling tasks. GEC's spelling errors in writing to dictation showed a linear serial position effect, including deletions of final letters. These "fragm…

The extraction of orthographic and phonological structure of printed words in adults with dyslexia.

The current study investigated the extraction of orthographic and phonological structure of written words in adults with dyslexia. In adults without learning difficulties, Chetail and Content showed that orthographic structure, as determined by the number of vowel letter clusters, influences visual word length estimation. The authors also found a phonological effect determined by the number of syllables of words. In the present study, 22 French-speaking students diagnosed with dyslexia in childhood and 22 students without learning disabilities were compared. All participants performed the task

Design of an Interactive Mind Calligraphy System by Affective Computing and Visualization Techniques for Real-Time Reflections of the Writer's Emotions.

A novel interactive system for calligraphy called mind calligraphy that reflects the writer's emotions in real time by affective computing and visualization techniques is proposed. Differently from traditional calligraphy, which emphasizes artistic expression, the system is designed to visualize the writer's mental-state changes during writing using audio-visual tools. The writer's mental state is measured with a brain wave machine to yield attention and meditation signals, which are classified next into the four types of emotion, namely, focusing, relaxation, calmness, and anxiety. These emot…

Bimodal aphasia and dysgraphia: Phonological output buffer aphasia and orthographic output buffer dysgraphia in spoken and sign language.

We report a case of crossmodal bilingual aphasia-aphasia in two modalities, spoken and sign language-and dysgraphia in both writing and fingerspelling. The patient, Sunny, was a 42 year-old woman after a left temporo-parietal stroke, a speaker of Hebrew, Romanian, and English and an adult learner, daily user of Israeli Sign language (ISL). We assessed Sunny's spoken and sign languages using a comprehensive test battery of naming, reading, and repetition tasks, and also analysed her spontaneous-speech and sign. Her writing and fingerspelling were assessed using tasks of dictation, naming, and d…

The association between time spent on screens and reading with myopia, premyopia and ocular biometric and anthropometric measures in 6- to 7-year-old schoolchildren in Ireland.

PURPOSE: More time spent on near tasks has consistently been associated with the promotion of myopia. The World Health Organization advises limiting daily screentime to less than 2 h for children aged five and over. This study explored the relationship between time spent on screens and reading/writing with refractive status, ocular biometric and anthropometric factors in 6- to 7-year-olds in Ireland. METHODS: Participants were 723 schoolchildren (377 boys [51.8%]), mean age 7.08 (0.45) years. The examination included cycloplegic autorefraction (1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride), ocular biometr…

After a pre-induction baseline, we induced either a state of rumination using a series of writing exercises centered on the description of an unresolved academic concern or a state of distraction by centering writing on the description of a neutral school day. Within our women-only sample, the Rumination condition, which writing analysis showed …

Construct validity, intrarater and interrater reliability of the Italian version of the systematic screening of handwriting difficulties (SOS) test in people with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: The "Systematic Screening of Handwriting Difficulties in Parkinson's Disease" (SOS) test is the only tool specifically designed to evaluate handwriting in people with Parkinson's Disease (pwPD). It is language specific. OBJECTIVE: To assess the construct validity, intrarater and interrater reliability of the Italian version of the SOS test. METHODS: Thirty-five pwPD and 15 healthy controls (HC) completed the Italian version of the SOS test. Participants copied an Italian text for 5 min on blank paper using a pen. Two independent raters evaluated writing speed, letter size, and ha…
