Aedes aegypti strain fitness for yellow fever virus transmission.

Three geographical strains of Aedes aegypti from Thailand (Amphur), East Africa (Kampala), and the West Indies (Santo Domingo) were compared for susceptibility to infection with low-passage yellow fever virus (French viscerotropic) as well as for ability to transmit virus by bite at varying extrinsic incubation periods. Santo Domingo strain appeared the most competent and Kampala the least when mosquitoes were exposed to a low level virus-infecting blood meal; at higher virus levels, a similar trend was noted but differences were less evident and in no case were the differences statistically s…

A Systematic Review on Yellow Fever Vaccine and Adverse Events.

INTRODUCTION: Yellow fever (YF) is a hemorrhagic viral infection that can be prevented by a highly effective live attenuated virus vaccine (YFV), which is not free from adverse reactions. This systematic review evaluated the burden of adverse events, including serious ones, due to vaccination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was carried out following the guidelines of the Cochrane Collaboration and the Meta-analysis Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology, PRISMA 2020 checklist, and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes. RESULTS: The suitable bibliography …

Analysis of Morbidity and Mortality Due to Yellow Fever in Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Yellow fever (YF) is a viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted by mosquitoes, characterized by a high mortality due to kidney and liver failure, massive coagulation disorders, and hemorrhages. With no specific treatment, prevention through vaccination and vector control is essential. This study investigates the epidemiology of YF in Brazil from 2011 to 2020, focusing on its trends and distribution across the territory. METHODS: This ecological time-series study analyzed confirmed YF cases in Brazil's 27 federative units between 2011 and 2020. Data were sourced from DATASUS, IBGE, an…

Immunogenicity and reactogenicity of yellow fever vaccine in people with HIV.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate immunogenicity and reactogenicity of yellow fever (YF) vaccine in people with HIV (PWH) compared to HIV-uninfected controls. DESIGN: In this longitudinal interventional trial (NCT03132311), PWH with CD4 + cell count ≥200 cells/μl and controls, aged 18-59, without a previous history of YF vaccination received a single standard dose of YF vaccine (17DD) and were followed at Days 5, 30 and Year 1. METHODS: YF-neutralization titers were measured at Days 0, 30 and Year 1 and geometric mean titers (GMT) were calculated. Adverse events (AE) and YF virus detection were measure…

The role of forest fragmentation in yellow fever virus dispersal.

The intense process of deforestation in tropical forests poses serious challenges for the survival of biodiversity, as well as for the human species itself. This scenario is supported by the increase in the incidence of epidemics of zoonotic origin observed over the last few decades. In the specific case of sylvatic yellow fever (YF), it has already been shown that an increase in the transmission risk of the causative agent (yellow fever virus - YFV) is associated with areas with a high degree of forest fragmentation, which can facilitate the spread of the virus. In this study we tested the hy…

The response to re-emergence of yellow fever in Nigeria, 2017.

Yellow fever (YF) is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease caused by the YF virus (arbovirus) which continues to cause severe morbidity and mortality in Africa. A case of YF was confirmed in Nigeria on the 12th of September 2017, 21 years after the last confirmed case. The patient belongs to a nomadic population with a history of low YF vaccination uptake, in the Ifelodun Local Government Area (LGA) of Kwara State, Nigeria. An active case search in Ifelodun and its five contiguous LGAs led to the listing of 55 additional suspect cases of YF within the period of the outbreak investigation between …
