[Assessment of osteoporosis in the local population by means of a portable dual energy X-ray absorptiometry unit].

We assessed bone mineral density (BMD) in the local population by means of a portable dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) unit. BMD was measured by DXA in 197 women (62 premenopausal and 135 postmenopausal) in Shiunji town. Age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), menstrual history, obstetric history, habits, symptoms and hormonal cytology (eosinophilic index (EI), karyopyknotic index (KPI) and maturation value (MV)) were investigated. A negative correlation (r = -0.645, p < 0.01) was found between BMD and age. Low BMD (BMD < 0.8g/cm2) was found at a rate of 3.2% in premenopausal women a

New bone formation during leg lengthening. Evaluated by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry.

We measured the extent and rate of new bone formation over an 18-month period before, during and after the lengthening of ten leg segments in six patients aged between 8 and 18 years, using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). New bone formation could be identified within one week of the start of distraction. As lengthening proceeded, the bone density of the gap fell, reaching minimum values at the time of maximal distraction. Consolidation of the regenerating bone was started 1 to 2 weeks later in the tibia, and 2.5 to 3.0 weeks later in the femur. The rate of mineral accretion in new bon

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in the lumbar spine, proximal femur and distal radius in children.

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure bone mineral density (BMD) in the lumbar spine, proximal femur and distal radius in 48 Japanese children aged 3-18 years. In the normal children (n = 32), BMD increased with age in all locations, with a nearly twofold increase from preschool age to adolescence. Most of the children with chronic diseases known to affect bone metabolism (e.g., steroid osteoporosis) (n = 16) had low BMD in every region, indicating that these disease states probably affect multiple sites of the skeleton in children.

Coralline hydroxyapatite bone graft substitutes in a canine diaphyseal defect model: radiographic features of failed and successful union.

Radiographic and densitometric evaluation of a new type of bone graft substitute derived from reef-building sea coral via a hydrothermal chemical exchange process was undertaken in a canine diaphyseal defect model. Comparably sized blocks of this material and autogenous iliac cortical-cancellous graft were implanted into the respective radial diaphyses of seven dogs. Qualitative and quantitative radiographic assessment was performed during the immediate postoperative period and at 3 months following surgery. Significant complications were observed radiographically in over half of the coralline

[Comparison of radiodensitometry and histomorphometry in normal and abnormal bone (author's transl)].

85 adults of both sexes, suffering from variety of bone disorders were studied by means of humeral radiodensitometry and histomorphometric analysis of iliac bone biopsies. Trabecular bone volume (TBV) was not related to cortical thickness. Bone mineral density was related to iliac TBV only in female subjects. The value of these measures is limited in osteoporosis because of measurement errors and skeletal inhomogeneity. In osteoporosis, variable histomorphometric features were observed. However, radiodensitometry proved a good measure of the state of mineralization in osteomalacia.

1alpha-hydroxycholecalciferol: a promising therapeutic approach for renal osteodystrophy.

The effectiveness of 1alpha-hydroxycholecalciferol [1alpha-OH)D3] in healing uremic bone disease was investigated in 10 uremic patients on maintenance dialysis. Seven patients received 1alpha-(OH)D3, 2 microgram/day, for six months, and three patients served as a control group. Bone density was determined from X-rays of the second phalanx of the second digit. The apparent intestinal calcium absorption improved on treatment with 1alpha-(OH)D3, serum calcium levels and bone density significantly increased, and a significant decrease in serum alkaline phosphatase activity was observed. In one pat

Late changes in bone mineral density of the proximal tibia following total or partial medial meniscectomy. A randomized study.

The adaptive bone remodeling in the proximal tibia following medial meniscectomy was measured quantitatively by dual photon absorptiometry. Thirty-three patients who had undergone a meniscectomy (randomized to either total [n=19] or partial [n=14] meniscectomy) performed by open joint surgery approximately 12 years earlier were included in the study. Bone mineral density was measured in the previously injured legs and in the healthy contralateral legs in areas located medially and laterally in the cortical bone of the subchondral plates and below in the trabecular bone of the medial and latera

Associations between bone mineral density, body composition and amenorrhoea in females with eating disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lower bone mineral density (BMD) increases the risk of osteoporosis in individuals with eating disorders (EDs), particularly women with anorexia nervosa (AN), making them susceptible to pain and fractures throughout adulthood. In AN, low weight, hypothalamic amenorrhoea, and longer illness duration are established risk factors for low BMD, and in people with other EDs a history of AN seems to be an important risk factor for low BMD. PURPOSE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of BMD in individuals with EDs, including AN, bulimia nervosa (BN), binge-eating disorder (B

Determinants of bone mineral density and spinal fracture risk in postmenopausal Japanese women.

The present study analyzed the factors that determine bone mineral density (BMD) and predict spinal fracture risk in postmenopausal Japanese women. Two hundred and five postmenopausal Japanese women aged 48-84 years (mean age 64 years) were enrolled in the cross-sectional study. BMD of the lumbar spine, femoral neck and total body as well as body composition were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Mid-radial BMD was measured by single-photon absorptiometry. We also determined serum levels of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, IGF binding protein-2, -3 and osteocalcin as well

Endothelial activation and stress index and bone mineral density in a cross-sectional study.

ObjectiveReduced Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is influenced by multiple factors, including muscle status, chronic inflammation, and micro-circulatory alterations. Practical indicators derived from routine laboratory tests are needed to facilitate risk identification in real-world settings. This study aimed to investigate the association between the Endothelial Activation and Stress Index (EASIX) and BMD, and to explore the potential utility of this composite index in reflecting bone health status.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Body Composition-Driven Phenotyping Reveals Obesity and Cardiometabolic Heterogeneity in Children Using a Tree-Like Representation.

UNLABELLED: Traditional measures such as BMI do not fully capture obesity-related metabolic risks. Here, we examined DXA-derived body composition patterns in children (n = 11,238) using the discriminative dimensionality reduction tree algorithm, which was validated in an independent cohort (n = 2,001). The tree structure revealed a continuous landscape of body composition phenotypes, with distinct spatial gradients for fat and lean mass. Within the phenotypic tree, fat-dominant phenotypes clustered in the region of low dimension 1 and low dimension 2 (corresponding to the lower left branches),

Plant-based dietary patterns and peak bone mass in healthy young adult women.

Fifty percent of women over the age of 50 experience osteoporotic fractures. However, peak bone mass is achieved in young adulthood. Recent research suggests that plant-based dietary patterns may be associated with lower bone mineral density and greater fracture risk in older adults. Limited evidence exists among younger populations, particularly studies assessing overall diet quality using index-based dietary measures. We examined associations between plant-based dietary patterns and bone density in a cross-sectional sample of 260 healthy women aged 18-30 participating in the UMass Vitamin D

Effects of a Combined Dietary and Physical Activity Intervention on Bone Density, Lean Mass and Fat Mass in Adults: The GOTO Trial.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional weight-loss interventions are known to reduce bone mineral density (BMD), which can be prevented by adding (resistance) exercise training. However, this combined effect is not well studied in non-obese adults. In addition, the association between biomarkers and metabolite-based composite health markers with changes in BMD in such an intervention has not been studied as thoroughly. OBJECTIVE: The aims of the current study were to investigate the effect of a combined nutritional and activity lifestyle intervention on lumbar spine and total body BMD in healthy middle-aged

Incident subclinical vertebral fractures and health-related quality of life: JPOS cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Vertebral fractures are the most common osteoporotic fractures, yet approximately two-thirds of radiographically detectable fractures remain clinically unrecognized. The longitudinal impact of such subclinical vertebral fractures on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is not fully clarified. This study examined whether incident subclinical vertebral fractures were associated with subsequent changes in HRQOL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was nested within the Japanese Population-based Osteoporosis (JPOS) Cohort. Community-dwelling women aged ≥ 50 years without clinical fr

Longitudinal Changes in Bone Mineral Density and Trabecular Bone Score in Adolescents With Graves' Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Longitudinal data on bone health in adolescents with Graves' disease (GD) are limited. Thus, we aimed to evaluate lumbar spine bone mineral density (LSBMD) and trabecular bone score (TBS) changes in this population. METHODS: Baseline and follow-up LSBMD Z-score (LSBMDZ) and TBS Z-score (TBSZ) were measured. TBS was analysed using iNsight software. RESULTS: Forty-one adolescents with GD (age 13.7 ± 2.8 years, 73% female) were enroled. At baseline, 18% of adolescents with recently diagnosed GD (RGD, ≤ 6 months) had low LSBMD (median LSBMDZ: -0.7 [-1.5 to -0.4]), and 58% had low TBS

Pediatric Lateral Distal Femur Reference Ranges for Ages 1 to 18 years.

INTRODUCTION: Many children with musculoskeletal disorders are at high risk of fracture, and the lateral distal femur (LDF) may be the only feasible site to measure bone mineral density (BMD) by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Pediatric reference ranges and adjustment for linear growth are needed to interpret BMD results. METHODS: Lateral distal femur scans by DXA were obtained on children, ages 1 to 18 y, from two clinical centers. Precision in young children was estimated from duplicate scans. Smoothed reference ranges for three regions of the LDF were generated. Prediction equation
