We present a finite-element model of the gerbil middle ear that, using a set of baseline parameters based primarily on a priori estimates from the literature, generates responses that are comparable with responses we measured in vivo using multi-point vibrometry and with those measured by other groups. We investigated the similarity of numerous features (umbo, pars-flaccida and pars-tensa displacement magnitudes, the resonance frequency and break-up frequency, etc.) in the experimental responses with corresponding ones in the model responses, as opposed to simply computing frequency-by-frequen

Saccades cause compression of visual space around the saccadic target, and also a compression of time, both phenomena thought to be related to the problem of maintaining saccadic stability (Morrone et al., 2005; Burr and Morrone, 2011). Interestingly, similar phenomena occur at the time of hand movements, when tactile stimuli are systematically mislocalized in the direction of the movement (Dassonville, 1995; Watanabe et al., 2009). In this study, we measured whether hand movements also cause an alteration of the perceived timing of tactile signals. Human participants compared the temporal sep

BACKGROUND: It has been claimed that children with dyslexia show a general impairment in the processing of rapid auditory stimuli. However, most previous studies in this field have focused on children with language impairment or children who do not meet accepted criteria for dyslexia.
METHODS: In the present study, the processing of rapid non-verbal auditory stimuli (complex tones) was examined in a population-based sample of 24 children with dyslexia, 10 to 12 years of age, and a matched control group.
RESULTS: The dyslexia group showed reduced tone processing relative to the control group,

The mismatch negativity (MMN), a brain response elicited by a discriminable change in any repetitive aspect of auditory stimulation even in the absence of attention, has been widely used in both basic and clinical research during recent years. The fact that the MMN reflects the accuracy of auditory discrimination and that it can be obtained even from unattentive subjects makes it an especially attractive tool for studying various central auditory-system dysfunctions both in adults and children. In this review, we will discuss the applicability of the MMN to studies in dyslexia, which is curren

This study investigated the effects of sample size on the noise floor and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in 55 normal-hearing subjects as a function of intensity. More specifically, we investigated the effects of sample size (12-400 sweeps) as a function of intensity (L1 = L2 = 35, 45 and 55 dB SPL), firstly, on the identifiability of DPOAEs (2F1-F2), secondly, on the noise floor adjacent to DPOAEs, and thirdly, on the magnitude of DPOAEs centred around geometric means of 531 Hz, 1,000 Hz, 2,000 Hz and 4,000 Hz. Testing was conducted with a commercially available system for

It has been shown by L. Collet in 1990 that the contralateral noise stimulation causes the decrease in the amplitude of otoacoustic emissions in the ipsilateral (tested) ear. This effect is linked to the activation of crossed efferent fibres in the cochlea. This non-invasive method is becoming a useful tool in assessing the function of efferent system in human. In this study the effect of contralateral noise stimulation was assessed in 10 young subjects with normal hearing. The contralateral stimulation caused the decrease in the amplitude of both transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE)

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) were monitored in two human males undergoing estrogen treatment prior to sex-reversal surgery. In one subject, multiple spontaneous emissions (SOAEs) appeared where none had been evident previously. One reasonable interpretation is that (in this male, at least) androgens normally produced a suppressive effect on the cochlear mechanisms responsible for SOAEs, and that the decline in androgen levels produced by the estrogenic drug led to a reduction in that suppression.

This study examined the effects of gender, ear asymmetry and activity status of infants on various measures of transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE), including signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and reproducibility of emissions, using TEOAE as a mass screening procedure in a community health setting. Five hundred and sixty-eight infants were screened for hearing at two months of age, before immunization. The ILO88 Otodynamic Analyzer Quickscreen program was used for all testing with pass/fail criteria similar to those used in the Rhode Island hearing assessment project. The results indicated

Otoacoustic emissions were evoked (EOAE) in 6 normal-hearing subjects by both bone (BCS) and air conduction stimulation (ACS). Four subjects affected by unilateral otosclerosis were also examined in order to determine the role of the ossicular chain in EOAE transmission to the eardrum. In normal-hearing subjects, EOAE by BCS showed the same characteristics as those evoked by ACS. The morphological features remained unchanged over a period of 4 months and their amplitude increased non-linearly with increasing stimulus intensity. In subjects with unilateral otosclerosis before surgery, no EOAE c

Sound and skull-tap induced vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) were studied in a 43-year-old man following inferior vestibular neurectomy. Surgery was performed because of a small acoustic neuroma. Postoperative caloric testing suggested sparing of superior vestibular nerve function on the operated side. In response to sound stimulation there were no VEMP on the operated side, irrespective of whether sounds were presented by air- or bone-conduction. This suggests sound-induced VEMP to be critically dependent on inferior vestibular nerve function and this is in agreement with present

Designing multi-sensor experiments to study interactive communication is costly, complex, and often poorly documented, particularly in terms of implementation challenges and the rationale behind decision-making. Here, we aim to demystify the process by detailing the development of a custom multi-sensor lab designed to monitor comprehensive behavioural and physiological responses during interactive communication. To illustrate the system architecture, we use an implemented paradigm as a worked example: two adults engaged in natural conversation while listening to realistic background noise scen

BACKGROUND: Air-conducted and skull-tap cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (AC-cVEMP and Tap-cVEMP) have been shown to be very promising tools in clinical practice. They are noninvasive, easy to obtain and - importantly - they require little time and the cost of the instruments is low.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the combined use of ACand Tap-cVEMPs as a diagnostic tool for advanced assessment of vestibular schwannoma in determining tumor origin, and to investigate whether the results are helpful for a surgeon as an additional source of info

Declines in auditory nerve (AN) function contribute to suprathreshold auditory processing and communication deficits in individuals with normal hearing, hearing loss, hyperacusis, and tinnitus. Procedures to characterize AN loss or dysfunction in humans are limited. We report several novel complementary metrics using the compound action potential (CAP), a direct measure of summated AN activity. Together, these metrics may be used to characterize AN function noninvasively in humans. We examined how these metrics change with stimulus intensity and interpreted these changes within a framework of

The purpose of this study was to examine wideband energy reflectance (ER) at ambient pressure in adults with a variety of middle-ear disorders. The ER results from 9 participants with middle-ear disorders and 1 participant with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss were compared with data provided by a group of 40 young adults with normal hearing sensitivity. Wideband ER results for the participant with sensorineural hearing loss followed the typical pattern of the data for young adults with normal hearing. For the 9 participants with middle-ear disorders (13 ears), the wideband ER responses fe

In 45 patients with surgically proven pontine angle tumors, compound action potential (AP) and summating potential (SP) were recorded with transtympanic electrocochleography (ECochG) together with brainstem electric responses (BSER). The aims were to quantify the mechanism by which tumors cause hearing loss and evaluate the diagnostic potentials of ECochG and BSER for detecting eighth nerve and brainstem tumors. Except for AP latency and narrow band AP waveform, response parameters recorded by ECochG are uncorrelated. Four uncorrelated parameters were abnormal in only 10% of the cases, three i
