[Systemic sensitization to 17-beta estradiol induced by transcutaneous administration].

INTRODUCTION: Transdermal administration of drugs to obtain a systemic effect may lead to allergic sensitization and compromise subsequent use via another administration route. OBSERVATION: A 52-year-old woman presented contact eczema with the transdermal therapeutic system Estraderm TTS50. Generalized eczema developed later after oral administration of an oestrogen derivative. Skin tests demonstrated allergic sensitization to 17 beta-oestradiol. DISCUSSION: Contact eczema due to transdermal therapeutic systems are usually caused by agents other than the active drug. Sensitization to the act

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in domestic dogs.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis was clinically diagnosed by non-healing skin lesions present on dorsal surface of nose (Snout) and outer surface of ear and by making impression smear from lesions. One per cent Berberine sulphate inoculated intralesionally on four occasions at weekly interval was found to be highly effective against cutaneous leishmaniasis in domestic dogs.

Local tolerability and pharmacokinetic profile of a new transdermal delivery system, diclofenac hydroxyethylpyrrolidine plaster.

Flector plaster is a new transdermal delivery system medicated with diclofenac hydroxyethylpyrrolidine salt, an NSAID which seems to possess suitable physiochemical properties for easy release by the plaster matrix for percutaneous absorption. The paper deals with local tolerability and pharmacokinetic (percutaneous absorption) studies carried out both on animals and on volunteers. The results obtained in the safety studies demonstrate the absence of local skin reactions and of sensitization phenomena. The kinetic evidence, obtained at the steady-state, reveals a profile typical of a sustained

The therapeutic use of topical minoxidil.

Topical minoxidil is a trichogenic agent that stimulates the hair follicle via the vasoactive metabolite minoxidil sulfate without any evidence of antiandrogen activity or an effect on the immune system. Less than 5% of the applied dose is absorbed. The therapeutic effect on hair regrowth is demonstrated for androgenetic alopecia in males and females, by a computer-assisted image analysis counting technique of nonvellus hairs from a photographic print. Patients with severe alopecia areata respond poorly to topical minoxidil treatment. The most common adverse reactions are limited to irritant a

The Hypothermic Effect of Hydrogen Sulfide Is Mediated by the Transient Receptor Potential Ankyrin-1 Channel in Mice.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been shown in previous studies to cause hypothermia and hypometabolism in mice, and its thermoregulatory effects were subsequently investigated. However, the molecular target through which H2S triggers its effects on deep body temperature has remained unknown. We investigated the thermoregulatory response to fast-(Na2S) and slow-releasing (GYY4137) H2S donors in C57BL/6 mice, and then tested whether their effects depend on the transient receptor potential ankyrin-1 (TRPA1) channel in Trpa1 knockout (Trpa1-/-) and wild-type (Trpa1+/+) mice. Pretreatment with allergen prevents immediate hypersensitivity and airway hyperresponsiveness.

The ability of subcutaneous pretreatment with an immunogenic peptide derived from Fel d I, the major cat protein, to suppress the development of allergic responses was examined in a mouse model of antigen-induced sensitization. BALB/c mice exposed to aerosolized Fel d I chain 1 peptide developed antigen-specific IgE responses, immediate cutaneous reactivity to the peptide, and increased airway responsiveness (AR). Both subcutaneous and intraperitoneal administration of the peptide prior to sensitization caused a 50% reduction in cutaneous reactivity which was associated with a decrease in seru

Oral and cutaneous pemphigus vulgaris: an atypical clinical presentation.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a rare painful and blistering autoimmune mucocutaneous disorder that appears in middle-aged adults. Oral lesions typically precede cutaneous involvement and tend to be more recalcitrant to therapy. The objective of this article is to present a case of oral and cutaneous PV in an atypical patient, a 23-year-old woman. The case was distinguished by the patient's age, which was 2 to 3 decades younger than the reported mean age of onset, and its coincidence with celiac disease, an immunopathologic process rarely seen in association with PV. Intravenous administration of

Dermatomyositis-like eruption after long-term hydroxyurea therapy for polycythemia vera.

Hydroxyurea (HU) is an antitumor agent used to treat chronic myeloproliferative disorders. HU is usually well tolerated, but several cutaneous changes have been reported during long-term HU therapy. Although the occurrence of dermatomyositis-like changes during long-term HU therapy are well known, they are rarely described in patents with polycythemia vera. We report a 69 year-old-male with polycythemia vera who developed a dermatomyositis-like eruption on his face and dorsum of the hands following long-term HU therapy. Despite the cutaneous features, there were no clinical signs of muscular i

Cutaneous improvement in refractory adult and juvenile dermatomyositis after treatment with rituximab.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to assess the efficacy of rituximab for the cutaneous manifestations of adult DM and JDM. METHODS: Patients with refractory adult DM (n = 72) and JDM (n = 48) were treated with rituximab in a randomized placebo-phase-controlled trial [either rituximab early drug (week 0/1) or rituximab late arms (week 8/9), such that all subjects received study drug]. Stable concomitant therapy was allowed. Cutaneous disease activity was assessed using the Myositis Disease Activity Assessment Tool, which grades cutaneous disease activity on a visual analog scale. Cryoneurolysis with Injectable Ice Slurry Modulates Mechanical Skin Pain.

Cutaneous pain is a common symptom of skin disease, and available therapies are inadequate. We developed a neural selective and injectable method of cryoneurolysis with ice slurry, which leads to a long-lasting decrease in mechanical pain. The aim of this study is to determine whether slurry injection reduces cutaneous pain without inducing the side effects associated with conventional cryoneurolysis. Using the rat sciatic nerve, we examined the effects of slurry on nerve structure and function in comparison with the effects of a Food and Drug Administration‒approved cryoneurolysis device (Iov

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide promotes cutaneous dendritic cell functions in contact hypersensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Sensory nerves regulate cutaneous local inflammation indirectly through induction of pruritus and directly by acting on local immune cells. The underlying mechanisms for how sensory nerves influence cutaneous acquired immune responses remain to be clarified. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the effect of peripheral nerves on cutaneous immune cells in cutaneous acquired immune responses. METHODS: We analyzed contact hypersensitivity (CHS) responses as a murine model of delayed-type hypersensitivity in absence or presence of resiniferatoxin-induced sensory nerve denervation.

Mucormycosis: emerging prominence of cutaneous infections.

Twenty-five patients with mucormycosis were seen at two university-affiliated hospitals from 1979 to 1993. These cases included 10 cutaneous, 9 rhinocerebral, and 3 disseminated infections, as well as one case each of pulmonary, renal, and peritoneal dialysis catheter-related infection. Eleven of the patients were diabetic and seven had ketoacidosis, including four who became acidotic after admission to the hospital. The mortality rates associated with rhinocerebral, disseminated, and pulmonary infections were 78%-100%, while those associated with cutaneous and miscellaneous forms were zero. I

Pityriasis rosea after administration of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

Pityriasis rosea (PR) is an acute papulosquamous cutaneous disorder that classically presents with a herald patch rapidly followed by a widespread rash along skin cleavage lines. Although the exact pathogenesis of PR is unknown, current evidence suggests that an inflammatory reaction due to a viral trigger may lead to the cutaneous manifestations. COVID-19 has been reported as one such viral trigger for PR. Previously, PR has been reported in temporal association with various viral inoculations. This article presents a case of PR in a 66-year-old black male 1 week after administration of the P

Extensive cutaneous larva migrans with folliculitis mimicking multimetameric herpes zoster presentation in an adult traveler returning from Thailand.

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a frequent cutaneous disease among travelers returning from the tropics. It can be misdiagnosed or treated incorrectly. We present a 42-year-old French patient who contracted the disease during a holiday in Thailand and who experienced an extensive CLM syndrome with a less frequent abdominal localization and a pseudo-multimetameric homolateral topography. The condition was late diagnosed and secondarily efficiently cured by a unique administration of ivermectin. Simple anamnestic information--often revealing beach activities--and clinical aspec

Cutaneous adverse events related to COVID-19 vaccines: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study of 867 patients.

Considering the emergency approval of the Food and Drug Administration for widespread use of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines, evaluating potential vaccine-related adverse effects is critical as it will allow physicians to diagnose and manage these complications properly. In this descriptive cross-sectional questionnaire-based study, we evaluated the possible side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine from June 1, 2021 to June 21, 2021. The Iranian population is generally vaccinated with AstraZeneca, Sputnik V, Sinopharm, and Bharat vaccines. The continuous and categorical variables were

Serum from CBA/Ca mice vaccinated with irradiated cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni protects naive recipients through the recruitment of cutaneous effector cells.

Passive transfer experiments showed that 76% of the resistance induced in CBA/Ca mice by exposure to radiation-attenuated cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni could be transferred to naive recipients by administration of donor serum. The level of protection achieved depended on the volume of serum administered and immunity was demonstrated most consistently with serum harvested from thrice vaccinated donors. The serum was twice as effective when given to the recipients at the time of cercarial challenge as compared to administration 5 days after challenge, a result which indicates that serum-depen
