BACKGROUND: In Mexico, information regardiing sunscreen protection is not widely accessible from sources other than manufacturers.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 12, over the counter sunscreens for oily or acne-prone skin available in the Mexican market.
SETTING: Dermatology Department. Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, Mexico.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty healthy volunteers ofskin type III and IV were tested. Sunscreen SPFs were measured using solar simulated radiation according to FDA final monograph.

In a prospective study amongst febrile travellers returning from malaria-endemic areas to Berlin, Germany, two rapid malarial antigen detection tests were compared for the diagnosis of vivax malaria with routine microscopy. With ICT Malaria P.f./P.v.((R)), 664 samples of 492 patients were examined. 17 patients had vivax malaria, out of which 11 infections were missed (35.3% sensitivity). BACKGROUND: An outbreak of syphilis has been identified primarily in Dublin, Ireland. On a background of a stable low incidence of syphilis, a significant increase in the number of cases of syphilis has been observed over the past 18 months.
RESULTS: 181 cases of syphilis were seen in this period. 121 were defined as early syphilis. These cases were mainly among men who have sex with men (92%). Sixty-six subjects with severe fear of flying were recruited by advertisement and compared to 21 controls without flying fears. Subjects were interviewed and given several questionnaires to determine DSM-III-R diagnoses, history of flying, and development and course of flying phobia.
