Ultralate cerebral potentials as correlates of delayed pain perception: observation in a case of neurosyphilis.

Evoked cerebral potentials were investigated in a patient with neurosyphilis, who showed the symptoms of delayed pain perception in the lower limbs: a pinprick to the legs was perceived with a latency of more than one second. After stimulation with CO2 laser radiant heat pulses, evoked cerebral potentials of upper limbs were observed in a latency range comparable to those of healthy subjects, with a negative peak at 250 ms and a positive peak at 370 ms. In contrast, after application of laser stimuli to body sites with delayed pain perception, latency of the evoked potentials drastically incre

Retinal afferent and efferent connections in congenitally monophthalmic chicks.

The visual projections of the remaining eye of posthatch congenitally monophthalmic chicks were examined using wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase. The morphology of the primary visual centres and their retinal projections contralateral to the injected eye were similar to those of normal chicks. The ipsilateral primary visual centres were smaller and less organized, yet all received retinal input. These ipsilateral retinal projections differ from those found in normal posthatch chicks [O'Leary et al.: Devl. Brain Res. 10: 93-109, 1983] in that they are more extensive and occupy some c

The somatotopic organization of the ventroposterior thalamus of the squirrel monkey, Saimiri sciureus.

Multiunit microelectrode mapping techniques were used to investigate the organization of the somatosensory thalamus in squirrel monkeys. Receptive fields and response characteristics were determined for closely spaced recording sites along arrays of electrode penetrations that passed through the ventral thalamus dorsoventrally, rostrocaudally, or lateromedially. The results were related to thalamic architecture and led to the following conclusions: (1) A large, single, systematic representation of the body surface occupied most or all of the ventroposterior nucleus, VP. The nucleus was further

Temporal course of the threshold and size of the receptive field of the Babinski sign.

The changes of threshold and receptive field of the Babinski reflex, with time, were assessed in ten patients with acute cerebrovascular lesions. It was found that the threshold of the reflex decreased gradually and the size of the cutaneous afferent reflex field enlarged with the passage of time. These findings suggest that there is a gradual release or organisation of the reflex flexor synergy of which the Babinski sign is a modified part.

Retinofugal pathways from albino eyes embryonically transplanted to normal and albino axolotls.

Albino axolotl eyes were transplanted embryonically to normal and albino axolotl hosts. The animals were allowed to mature for several months and then their transplanted eyes were injected with tritiated proline. The projections from these albino eyes were compared with those obtained from similar transplants of normally pigmented eyes. Special attention was paid to the crossed and uncrossed components of the projections. No differences were found between normal and albino transplants. These results indicate that abnormal retinofugal crossing, which results from a lack of pigmentation in the m

Aminophylline differentiates between the depressant effects of morphine on the spinal nociceptive reflex and on the spinal ascending activity evoked from afferent C fibres.

The action of aminophylline on anti-nociceptive effects of morphine in rats was tested on the tail-flick response to noxious heat and on the activity evoked in ascending axons of the spinal cord by stimulation of nociceptive afferents. The depression of the tail-flick response produced by an intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of morphine 2 mg/kg in intact and spinal rats was abolished by an i.p. injection of aminophylline 25 mg/kg. The activity evoked in ascending axons of spinal rats by electrical stimulation of afferent C fibres of the sural nerve was depressed by an intravenous (i.v.) injecti

[Adrenal cortical function in rats with traumatic shock following removal and deafferentation of the hypothalamus].

The 11-oxycorticosteroid (11-OCS) content was studied in the blood plasma of sham-operated rats, rats with intact, ablated and deafferentated medial-basal hypothalamus (MBH) in traumatic shock. There were no reliable differences in the 11-OCS basal level in various groups of rats. MBH ablation led to the reduction in the weight of adrenal and pituitary glands and MBH deafferentation -- to increase in the weight of the former. The 11-OCS level was reliably higher in traumatic shock of rats with complete MBH deafferentation than in sham-operated animals.

[Evaluating function and disorders of taste].

In a first anatomical section the peripheral gustatory pathways, their central connections, nuclei and cortical projections are discussed. It is evident, that the gustatory fibres from the posterior part of the tongue run in the IX nerve and those from the soft palate reach the medulla oblongata via the petrosal and facial nerve. For the anterior part of the tongue there obviously exists only one gustatory pathway via the chorda tympani-facial nerve. About the further central pathways of taste fibres is much less known. In a second part the methods of taste testing with different taste solutio

Medullary relay neurons in the carotid-body chemoreceptor pathway of cats.

Central terminations of the carotid body chemoreceptor afferents were localized by recording field potentials and unit activity evoked by electrical stimulation of the carotid sinus nerve, and unit activity during chemical stimulation of the chemoreceptors. Areas where evoked responses with short latency could be recorded and which contained neurons that responded to carotid body excitation were located in two regions of the medulla, about the level of the obex: a dorsal region which included the nucleus tractus solitarius and the reticular formation just below this nucleus; and a ventrolatera

Role of neurogenic inflammation in local communication in the visceral mucosa.

Intense research has focused on the involvement of the nervous system in regard to cellular mechanisms underlying neurogenic inflammation in the pelvic viscera. Evidence supports the neural release of inflammatory factors, trophic factors, and neuropeptides in the initiation of inflammation. However, more recently, non-neuronal cells including epithelia, endothelial, mast cells, and paraneurons are likely important participants in nervous system functions. For example, the urinary bladder urothelial cells are emerging as key elements in the detection and transmission of both physiological and

Structure and connections of the thalamic reticular nucleus: Advancing views over half a century.

The advance of knowledge of the thalamic reticular nucleus and its connections has been reviewed and Max Cowan's contributions to this knowledge and to the methods used for studying the nucleus have been summarized. Whereas 50 years ago the nucleus was seen as a diffusely organized cell group closely related to the brain stem reticular formation, it can now be seen as a complex, tightly organized entity that has a significant inhibitory, modulatory action on the thalamic relay to cortex. The nucleus is under the control, on the one hand, of topographically organized afferents from the cerebral

Serotonin controls initiation of locomotion and afferent modulation of coordination via 5-HT7 receptors in adult rats.

KEY POINTS: Experiments on neonatal rodent spinal cord showed that serotonin (5-HT), acting via 5-HT7 receptors, is required for initiation of locomotion and for controlling the action of interneurons responsible for inter- and intralimb coordination, but the importance of the 5-HT system in adult locomotion is not clear. Blockade of spinal 5-HT7 receptors interfered with voluntary locomotion in adult rats and fictive locomotion in paralysed decerebrate rats with no afferent feedback, consistent with a requirement for activation of descending 5-HT neurons for production of locomotion. The dire

The spinotrigeminal pathway and its spatial relationship to the origin of trigeminospinal projections in the rat.

The anterograde transport of horseradish peroxidase and tritiated amino acids was used to examine the distribution and morphology of spinal afferent fibers terminating in the rat spinal trigeminal complex. The results confirm the existence of a direct, ipsilateral projection from the spinal cord which is distributed exclusively to the deepest layers of the medullary dorsal horn narrow regions subjacent to the spinal trigeminal tract in trigeminal nucleus interpolaris, trigeminal nucleus oralis and the trigeminal main sensory nucleus. Spinal inputs also terminated in the insular trigeminal-cune

Proprioceptive impairment in knee osteoarthritis.

Proprioception, the perception of limb position in space, is derived from afferent signals originating primarily from musculotendinous and joint receptors. Proprioception is critical to the maintenance of joint stability. Studies have demonstrated that proprioception is less accurate in patients with knee osteoarthritis versus elderly control subjects, in healthy older versus younger subjects, and in the setting of other conditions affecting the knee including anterior cruciate ligament deficiency and hypermobility syndrome. Possible pathways between proprioceptive inaccuracy, knee osteoarthri

New insights into neural injury, repair, and adaptation in visceral afferents and the enteric nervous system.

In this brief review, we focus on some of the proposed mechanisms of injury in peripheral visceral afferents (sensory) pathways and the enteric nervous system, including the interstitial cells of Cajal. Injury involving afferent neurons is discussed because of the relevance of these neurons to the pathophysiology of pain syndromes. The effect of various noxious stimuli on sensory and enteric neural function is examined. Finally, we discuss recent data on the role of autoimmune antibodies in neuronal injury in systemic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus and the Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrom

Activation of nociception-sensitive ionotropic glutamate receptor-expressing rostroventrolateral medulla neurons by stimulation of cardiac afferents in rats.

Myocardial ischemia causes the release of bradykinin, which activates afferent nerve endings in the ventricular epicardium. This elicits a sympathetically mediated increase in arterial pressure and heart rate, referred to as the cardiogenic sympathetic afferent reflex. The rostroventrolateral medulla (RVLM) is a key sympathetic brain stem site for regulating cardiovascular activity. This study aimed to determine the importance of non-barosensitive nociception sympathetic activity and the role of glutamate receptor activation of RVLM neurons in the cardiogenic sympathetic afferent reflex. We te

Involvement of metabotropic glutamate 5 receptor in visceral pain.

Metabotropic glutamate 5 receptor (mGluR5) antagonists are effective in animal models of inflammatory and neuropathic pain. The involvement of mGluR5 in visceral pain pathways from the gastrointestinal tract is as yet unknown. We evaluated effects of mGluR5 antagonists on the colorectal distension (CRD)-evoked visceromotor (VMR) and cardiovascular responses in conscious rats, and on mechanosensory responses of mouse colorectal afferents in vitro. Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to repeated, isobaric CRD (12 x 80 mmHg, for 30s with 5 min intervals). The VMR and cardiovascular responses to CR

IL-1β engages distinct peripheral sensory circuits to suppress feeding across time.

Loss of appetite is a hallmark of acute and chronic inflammation, and sustained anorexia causes malnutrition and worsens disease outcomes. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) is one of the most potently anorexigenic inflammatory cytokines, yet how it engages neural circuits that suppress feeding remains incompletely understood. Specifically, the role of peripheral sensory neurons in mediating IL-1β-induced anorexia is unresolved. Here, using DREADD-mediated inhibition of discrete peripheral sensory neuron populations and fiber photometry, we show that IL-1β-induced anorexia occurs in at least two temporall
