The results of both types of experiments confirm the suitability of the concept for inertial data pre-processing.

INTRODUCTION: Urine collection systems for in-flight use have gradually improved over the past 50 yr; however, current management of urine evacuation remains suboptimal. This is a cross-sectional survey-based study on the current urine collection device employed in the U.S. Air Force's U-2S airframe, examining efficacy, problems with wear, device maintenance, and complaint reporting.
METHODS: An anonymous survey consisting of 18 questions was generated inquiring about problems with wear of the urine collection system, care of the device, and education. The survey was offered at Beale AFB and

OBJECTIVE: To study whether there are differences between day and night in the dispatch of helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) and in their response and travelling times, medical treatment and transport of patients.
DESIGN: Retrospective, descriptive study.
METHOD: All data on helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) missions available 24/7 from Nijmegen, the Netherlands, during 2007 and 2008 were collected. All missions in this period were divided into daytime and night-time missions. Next, the reason for dispatch, the duration of distinct times during the mission, the method of

Healthy pregnant women can, in general, travel safely even to exotic destinations. Vaccines, medication and insurance coverage should be considered in advance. Chronic disease or pregnancy complications call for medical consultation beforehand. In advanced pregnancy, travel is restricted by commercial airlines. Low molecular weight heparin may be used to prevent deep vein thrombosis in risk groups during long flights. If travel to malaria areas cannot be avoided, chemoprophylaxis must be taken. The need for vaccinations must be assessed individually, according to risks. Killed vaccines are con

INTRODUCTION: Brugada syndrome describes a subgroup of patients at risk for polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, and sudden cardiac death and is likely underdiagnosed among aviators.
CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old male pilot presented to the clinic for his physical. He denied any symptoms on initial questioning. Subsequent electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed premature ventricular couplets with ST-segment elevation in V1 and V2 of the precordial leads with T-wave abnormalities.
DISCUSSION: Special care must be taken if ECG demonstrates a Brugada pattern-especially in patien

Some normally developing young children show an intense, passionate interest in a particular category of objects or activities. The present article documents the existence of extremely intense interests that emerge very early in life and establishes some of the basic parameters of the phenomenon. Surveys and interviews with 177 parents revealed that nearly one third of young children have extremely intense interests. The nature of these intense interests is described, with particular focus on their emergence, commonalities in the content of the interests, and the reactions of other people to t

In recent years, the association between air travel and the incidence of deep-vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism has become clearer. Epidemiologic studies reveal an increased relative risk of thromboembolism after flights of more than 8 hours and especially in subjects at higher risk for this disease, due, for example, to congenital thrombophilia or the use of oral contraceptives. However, the absolute risk of deep-vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism after prolonged air travel is very small. Studies have shown that a combination of factors present during prolonged air travel may account f

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic and clinical significance of newly acquired complete right bundle branch block (CRBBB) in airline pilots.
PATIENTS: This study included pilots with acquired CRBBB, identified from a group of over 2,700 Japan Airline pilots. When the pilots applied for employment, a past medical history, physical examination, electrocardiogram, and chest radiograph were obtained. The pilots with ECG abnormality including CRBBB were not included in the study because of hiring requirements.
RESULTS: Thirty-six pilots with CRBBB were identified

The examination of 86 helicopter pilots has shown that their exposure to vibration leads to biliary and gallbladder damage which aggravates with longer service. As indicated by spectroscopy and gas-liquid chromatography, vibration affects colloid-osmotic properties of bile: molecules grow in size, bile acids retention becomes longer.

Recurrent sinus barotrauma in an aviator is difficult to treat successfully. Exacerbations frequently result in marked aviator discomfort, cycles of temporary restriction from aviation duties, or even permanent disqualification for flying duties. Medical management and standard sinus operations are often ineffective, seldom curative, and have a disappointing record in returning the aviator to flying duties. Detailed computerized tomographic scanning of the paranasal sinuses coupled with the functional endoscopic sinus surgery approach directs treatment at the causative pathology. Sinus ventila

A Navy helicopter pilot was found to have a suprasellar mass during evaluation for primary infertility and mildly elevated prolactin level. Extensive evaluation revealed no other abnormalities. After 1 year of followup without radiographic tumor enlargement, he was returned to flying duties with continuing medical monitoring. Aeromedical considerations for tumors in the juxtasellar region are reviewed, including neuroendocrine disorders, neuro-ophthalmologic defects, and neurological impairment. The impact of improved diagnostic capabilities on aeromedical disposition is discussed.

The psychometric properties of four ataxia tests and their sensitivities to disorientation were examined to assess their potential for measuring balance disturbances frequently reported with simulator sickness. The study was conducted in two parts. In the first, subjects practiced for 10 sessions to examine learning effects and to stabilize performance. In the second, the sensitivities of the four tests were examined by comparing performance before and after exposure to sensory conflict produced using a disorientation training flight simulator. Subjective measures of disorientation, including

The affects of noise on the human inner ear have been well known for a long time, and measures to prevent occupational noise-induced hearing loss show a clear reduction in the statistics of morbidity. Nevertheless, there are working environments in which the use of ear protection seems to be inapplicable, because communication by speech is indispensable, for example in the cockpit of aircraft. Noise exposure measurements were performed on pilots of helicopters and propeller-machines of the German Federal Navy during realistic flight situations. The ambient noise levels during regular flight se…

Some 8% of Swiss citizens travel in the developing countries annually. Advising these travellers is an important task for the physician, though the most frequent infections are the less serious travellers' diarrhea and common colds. To some extent the more serious tropical diseases can be avoided by appropriate measures, e.g. vaccination (against yellow fever, tetanus, polio etc). and by chemoprophylaxis (malaria). Individual fitness for travel should be checked prior to any journey abroad, and special advice must be given to travellers with special risks (e.g. pregnant women, infants, persons

A study of children living adjacent to an international airport was conducted to learn whether noise exposure affected physical growth. Prenatal and postnatal noise exposures were estimated for each subject based on noise levels at their residences during jetplane takeoffs. Subjects' birthweights were standardized for sex and parity, and their postnatal heights and weights were standardized for sex and age (range 6-11 years). The difference between standardized birthweight score and postnatal height score, and between birthweight score and postnatal weight score, represent a change in growth s

Accidents and their sequelae are the main cause of death in Germany among people under 40 years of age. The cost in disability payments and lost work averages $40 000 per injury. The author describes the German system for trauma rescue. The aims of rescue care in Germany are to reduce the interval between injury and hospital admission and to bring the patient to the right hospital, bypassing smaller hospitals if necessary. Ambulance rescue systems are of two types: the stationary, in which the physician travels with the ambulance, and the rendezvous, in which the physician and ambulance, trave
