Compromised pontocerebellar and cerebellothalamocortical systems: speculations on their contributions to cognitive and motor impairment in nonamnesic alcoholism.

BACKGROUND: Corticopontocerebellar and cerebellothalamocortical circuits underlie a wide range of neuropsychological processes compromised by alcoholism. The analyses herein tested whether abnormalities of volumes of brain structures forming nodes of these separate feed-forward and feedback systems are selectively related to each other and whether any of these noncortical regions can account for cognitive and motor deficits occurring as sequelae of chronic alcoholism. METHODS: Regional brain measures originated from our prior neuroimaging studies, showing in alcoholics significant volume defi…

Effect of tryptophan depletion on impulsive behavior in men with or without a family history of alcoholism.

This study investigated the effects of acute serotonin depletion on two measures of impulsive behavior in healthy men with a family history of alcoholism. Serotonin has been implicated in several forms of impulsive behavior, as well as in the etiology of Type II alcoholism. The present study was designed to determine if an acute disturbance of serotonin function would increase impulsive responding on two behavioral indices of impulsivity, and whether this effect would be greater in individuals with a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. Forty healthy men, half of whom had an alcoholic father,…

[Applications of magnetic resonance spectrometry (MRS) in the study of metabolic disturbances affecting the brain in alcoholism].

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the current applications of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to the investigation of cerebral metabolism in alcoholic patients. The specific metabolic changes associated with the intoxication process (tolerance, dependance), abstinence and alcohol-related diseases (alcoholic encephalopathy, cirrhosis, Gayet-Wernicke's encephalopathy, Marchiafava-Bignami syndrome) are described.

Alcoholism in homeless men in the mid-nineties: results from the Bavarian Public Health Study on homelessness.

Parallel to structural economic changes homelessness has become publicly more visible and has received increased media attention in Western … ata). A higher rate of psychotic disorders was found for non-alcoholic homeless men. Data show that alcoholism and its consequences were more severe in the Munich as compared to North American samples. Homeless alcohol dependent men showed a high comorbidity with other mental disorders (life-time) such as mood disorders (36.4%), anxiety disorders (16.4%), dr …

Interestingly, the few (nine) subjects who had both early onset alcoholism and antisocial personality disorder had a higher plasma tryptophan but similar TRYP/LNAA ratio to the others. Patient factors predicting early alcohol-related readmissions for alcoholics: role of alcoholism severity and psychiatric co-morbidity.

The current study was undertaken primarily to identify whether psychiatric co-morbidity was associated with the rate and time of alcohol-related inpatient readmissions for a group of 255 patients discharged from alcoholism treatment at a midwestern rural medical center. A structured interview obtained information regarding psychiatric disorders, including depression, antisocial personality disorders and polysubstance abuse, as well as alcohol history and sociodemographics. Ninety-eight subjects (38.4% of sample) were readmitted for alcoholism-related diagnoses within 15 months of discharge. Pa…

Response to hepatitis B vaccine in Alaska natives with chronic alcoholism compared with non-alcoholic control subjects.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to determine if (1) alcoholics have a higher prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) serologic markers than do non-alcoholic controls and (2) if they respond to hepatitis B vaccination in a manner similar to that of non-alcoholic controls. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was designed as a case-control study, and 129 Alaska Natives were recruited. Alcoholics were recruited from inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, a soup kitchen serving the homeless, and several alcohol rehabilitation centers; control subjects were recruited primarily from among Alaska Native Hos

[Rhythm disorders of basic bioelectric activity of the brain in alcoholism and exposure to carbon disulfide (CS2)].

A visual and computer-assisted analysis was made of basic brain biological function in 45 EEG recordings of alpha waves alone or mostly alpha waves. The study revealed abnormal frequency of alpha waves in patients with chronic alcoholism (60%) and in people chronically exposed to carbon disulphide (73.4%). The abnormalities most probably reflect dysfunction of the CNS.

The possible occurrence of "alcoholic hepatitis" in a patient with bulimia in the absence of diagnosable alcoholism.

A case of a 20-yr-old female with possible "alcoholic hepatitis" and a mixed micro/macronodular cirrhosis occurring in association with overt bulimia and a history of anorexia nervosa, but without any objective evidence of either alcoholism or alcohol abuse, is reported. The possible factors that may have contributed, either alone or in combination, to produce this unusual occurrence are discussed.

[State of the tone and reactivity of the vascular wall in patients with chronic alcoholism during therapy].

With the aid of the rheoencephalographical and rheovazographical methods the authors revealed some objective criteria of a change of reactivity of brain vessels and peripheral vessels--the hypertonus of the vascular wall combined with a decreased pulse blood filling, a decrease of elasticity of the vascular wall. The pathogenetical validity of the inclusion of psychotropic drugs and insulin-sub-shock therapy into the scheme of antialcoholic treatment is proved.

P2X7 Receptor in Alcoholic Steatohepatitis and Alcoholic Liver Fibrosis.

Alcoholic liver disease is one of the most common chronic liver diseases in the world. It is a liver disease caused by prolonged heavy drinking and its main clinical features are nausea, vomiting, enlargement of the liver, and jaundice. Recent studies suggest that Kupffer cell-mediated inflammatory response is a core driver in the development of alcoholic steatohepatitis and alcoholic liver fibrosis. As a danger signal, extracellular ATP activates the assembly of NLPR3 inflammasome by acting on purine P2X7 receptor, the activated NLRP3 inflammasome prompts ASC to cleave pro-cCaspase-1 into act

This article is part of a Festschrift commemorating the 50th anniversary of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Established in 1970, first as part of the National Institute of Mental Health and later as an independent institute of the National Institutes of Health, NIAAA today is the world's largest funding agency for alcohol research. In addition to its own intramural research program, NIAAA supports the entire spectrum of innovative basic, translational, and clinical research to advance the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of alcohol use disorder and alcohol-r…

The Effects of Anger on Alcohol Demand and Subjective Alcohol Craving.

BACKGROUND: Anger and anger-related traits have been related to alcohol use in both cross-sectional and prospective studies. However, only a small number of studies have experimentally manipulated anger to examine whether the manipulation of anger influences alcohol craving or the relative reinforcing value of alcohol. METHODS: Participants (N = 231) recruited through Amazon's MTurk were randomly assigned to a provocation condition or a neutral condition prior to completing both the Alcohol Purchase Task and a self-report measure of alcohol craving. Linear regression analyses were conducted t

Epidemiology of non-alcoholic and alcoholic fatty liver diseases.

Liver diseases are fast emerging as global health priorities. Fatty liver is described in the setting of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as well as alcoholic liver disease (ALD), the pathogenesis of excess fat being different in the two conditions while both are important components of the changing face of burden of liver diseases worldwide. They are intimately associated with a globalized economy and an increasingly homogenous socio- cultural order with a westernized lifestyle. The accompanying adoption of a progressively sedentary life, consumption of diet dense in calories facilit
