Circle of Willis anomalies in Turner syndrome: Absent A1 segment of the anterior cerebral artery.

PURPOSE: Turner syndrome (TS) is the most common sex chromosome disorder in women and is associated with a higher than expected death rate secondary to cerebrovascular disease, including stroke. This study evaluates the cerebral vascular anatomy of individuals with TS. METHODS: Twenty-one women with TS had brain magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). These MRAs were evaluated in a blinded manner with a control group of 25 men and 25 women who had MRA imaging for multiple indications including migraine headaches, psychiatric disorders, and seizures. RESULTS: Twenty-nine percent of women with T

Ambiguous genitalia: comparative role of pelvic ultrasonography and genitography.

Ambiguous genitalia represents a true medical and social emergency which needs a multi-disciplinary team approach for elucidation. The paediatric radiologist plays an important role in defining the genital anatomy which remains one of the most important factors in sex determination. Aiming to compare the predictive value of pelvic ultrasonography and genitography in sex determination in patients with ambiguous genitalia, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 69 patients, 53 females and 16 males, where both procedures were employed. In female pseudohermaphroditism, the presence of

Methodological Quality and Overlap of Systematic Reviews Comparing Carotid Endarterectomy versus Carotid Artery Stenting in Symptomatic Contralateral Carotid Occlusion: An Overview of Reviews.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic contralateral carotid occlusion (CCO) is considered a high-risk scenario for carotid revascularization, yet the comparative evidence for carotid endarterectomy (CEA) versus carotid artery stenting (CAS) is largely derived from observational data and repeatedly synthesized in systematic reviews. This research aimed to assess reviews appraising the methodological quality of these evidence syntheses and quantify overlap of included primary studies. METHODS: PubMed and Embase were searched (June 2025) for systematic reviews and meta-analyses comparing CEA versus CAS in adu

Weight-bearing computed tomography volumetric analysis for diagnosis of syndesmotic instability: A new standard of care?

Assessing the severity and clinical impact of syndesmotic injury, especially when subtle, remains among the most diagnostically challenging conditions in foot and ankle orthopaedics. The distal tibiofibular syndesmosis is a complex, three-dimensional (3D) joint critical to ankle stability, and substantial injury to its ligament complex-especially if undetected or undermanaged-can result in long-term functional impairment. Unfortunately, routine clinical and conventional imaging evaluations are often inconclusive, falling short of capturing the dynamic and subtle nature of syndesmotic instabili

Anatomy of atrioventricular nodal reentry investigated by intracardiac echocardiography.

Intracardiac echocardiography was used to evaluate posteroseptal space anatomy in patients with atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia compared with patients with other mechanisms of tachycardia. The posteroseptal space was found to be significantly wider in patients with atrioventricular nodal reentry, suggesting an anatomic basis for dual atrioventricular nodal physiology.

In vivo models to evaluate ingestible devices: Present status and current trends.

Evaluation of orally ingestible devices is critical to optimize their performance early in development. Using animals as a pre-clinical tool can provide useful information on functionality, yet it is important to recognize that animal gastrointestinal physiology, pathophysiology and anatomy can differ to that in humans and that the most suitable species needs to be selected to inform the evaluation. There has been a move towards in vitro and in silico models rather than animal models in line with the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) as well as the better control and reproducibility

Anatomy, histology, and ultrasonography of the normal adrenal gland in brown lemur: Eulemur fulvus.

BACKGROUND: The medical care currently to brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus) is limited by a lack of knowledge of their anatomy. The aim of this study was to describe the anatomy and histology and obtain ultrasonographic measurements of normal adrenal glands in these animals. METHODS: The adrenal glands of four lemurs cadavers were used for the anatomical and histological studies, and those of 15 anesthetized lemurs were examined by ultrasonography. RESULTS: Anatomically, the adrenal glands of brown lemurs are comparable to those of other species. The histological findings showed that the cortex

Transrectal ultrasonography of anorectal diseases: advantages and disadvantages.

Transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) has been widely accepted as a popular imaging modality for evaluating the lower rectum, anal sphincters, and pelvic floor in patients with various anorectal diseases. It provides excellent visualization of the layers of the rectal wall and of the anatomy of the anal canal. TRUS is an accurate tool for the staging of primary rectal cancer, especially for early stages. Although magnetic resonance imaging is a modality complementary to TRUS with advantages for evaluating the mesorectum, external sphincter, and deep pelvic inflammation, three-dimensional ultrason

The female corpus spongiosum revisited.

BACKGROUND: The extension of the female corpus spongiosum is subject to controversy. The anterior continuation of the vestibular bulbs, or pars intermedia, is not commonly recognized as part of the corpus spongiosum. Some authors deny this part of the corpus spongiosum exists in females. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To investigate this controversy, anatomic and histologic studies were performed of the female corpus spongiosum. The specimens were taken from female-to-male transsexual surgical patients and from fresh female cadavers. They were compared to surgically amputated penises to establish the

Anterior perforations in lumbar discectomies. A report of four cases of vascular complications and a CT study of the prevertebral lumbar anatomy.

Four cases of vascular complications to anterior perforations during discectomy prompted a CT study to measure lumbar disc diameters and to evaluate the prevertebral anatomy. Fifty young adults who had been referred for low-back pain and/or sciatica but had not undergone operation were included. In five additional patients, prone versus supine CT examinations were compared. Six typical configurations of the vascular anatomy could be classified to explain the type of vascular complications occurring at the L3-4 and L4-L5 disc levels. The sagittal diameter of the three lowest lumbar discs varied

Influence of cerebrospinal fluid on power absorption during transcranial magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound treatment.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound beam aberration correction is vital when focusing ultrasound through the skull bone in transcranial magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (tcMRgFUS) applications. Current methods make transducer element phase adjustments to compensate for the variation in skull properties (shape, thickness, and acoustic properties), but do not account for variations in the internal brain anatomy. PURPOSE: Our objective is to investigate the effect of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain anatomy on beam focusing in tcMRgFUS treatments. METHODS: Simulations were conducted with imag

Effect of Anatomic Variability and Level of Approach on Perioperative Vascular Complications With Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of prospectively collected data. OBJECTIVE: The study aim was to determine the prevalence of vascular complications associated with anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) as a function of anatomic variation and the number of levels fused. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: ALIF often requires mobilization of the great vessels, particularly when exposing levels above L5-S1. The exposure can be more challenging in the setting of spondylolisthesis or transitional anatomy. METHODS: This retrospective review of prospectively collected data from our spine database ide

Nipple-areolar complex neurotization in implant-based breast reconstruction: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Nipple-sparing mastectomy with implant-based breast reconstruction preserves the visible nipple-areolar complex (NAC) but commonly disrupts protective, tactile, thermal, and erogenous sensation. Clinical interest has expanded, while donor selection, recipient targeting, bridge choice, implant-pocket constraints, outcome measurement, and candidacy remain unsettled. This narrative review addresses when native nerve preservation or reconstruction is anatomically credible, how implant-specific constraints affect operative planning, what the available outcomes support, and

3D printing in aortic endovascular therapies.

Endovascular treatment of aortic disease, including aneurysm or dissection, is expanding at a rapid pace. Often, the specific patient anatomy in these cases is complex. Additive manufacturing, also known as three-dimensional (3D) printing, is especially useful in the treatment of aortic disease, due to its ability to manufacture physical models of complex patient anatomy. Compared to other surgical procedures, endovascular aortic repair can readily exploit the advantages of 3D printing with regard to operative planning and preoperative training. To date, there have been numerous uses of 3D pri

The cerebral artery in cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis).

Cerebral artery structure has not been extensively studied in primates. The aim of this study was to examine the cerebrovascular anatomy of cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), which are one of the most commonly used primates in medical research on human diseases, such as cerebral infarction and subarachnoid hemorrhage. In this study, we investigated the anatomy and diameter of cerebral arteries from 48 cynomolgus monkey brain specimens. We found three anatomical differences in the vascular structure of this species compared to that in humans. First, the distal anterior cerebral artery is

Can we finally get a coronary angiography with the least amount of dye?

The incidence of adverse events complicating coronary angiography is still considerably high. Founded concerns about risks of coronary angiography, and mainly its inherent invasiveness, have favored the increasing request for noninvasive techniques to evaluate the coronary anatomy, such as multislice computed tomography (MSCT). Nonetheless, it has to be kept in mind that several risks and complications are the same both for MSCT and conventional coronary angiography. Rotational angiography has been shown to be a powerful imaging tool for the evaluation of coronary anatomy resulting in the use

Congenital anomalies in the teratological collection of Museum Vrolik in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. II: Skeletal dysplasias.

The Museum Vrolik collection of the Department of Anatomy and Embryology of the University of Amsterdam, founded by Gerardus Vrolik (1775-1859) and his son Willem Vrolik (1801-1863), consists of more than five thousand specimens of human and animal anatomy, embryology, pathology, and congenital anomalies. Recently, the collection of congenital anomalies was recatalogued and redescribed according to contempory syndromological views. The original descriptions, as far as preserved, were compared with the clinical and radiographical findings. In 18 specimens the following skeletal dysplasias were

Evaluation of fetal intracranial anatomy by static and real-time ultrasound.

Improvements in ultrasound technology have now made possible detailed visualization of fetal intracranial anatomy. Structures such as the midbrain, thalami, and lateral ventricles can be routinely imaged. Measurements of the ratio between lateral ventricular width and cerebral hemispheric width demonstrate a steady decrease from a mean of 56% at 15 wk gestation to 28% at term reflecting the relatively more rapid growth of the cerebral hemispheres as compared with the cerebral ventricles. Application of this new ultrasound data greatly facilitates accurate and consistent biparietal diameter est
