Tuberous sclerosis in a patient from Nigeria.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by mostly benign tumors of the brain, skin, heart, kidney, and eye. Aberrations in the genes TSC1 and TSC2 which encode hamartin and tuberin, respectively, cause TSC. Because disease manifestations develop over time, early diagnosis and intervention are imperative for patients. TSC is not well described in patients from sub-Saharan Africa or of black African ancestry. Here, we report on a 4-year-old Nigerian boy with skin lesions and cardiac anomalies associated with TSC. Furthermore, we note that in areas with li

Pediatric Nasal Obstruction.

Nasal obstruction is one of the most common problems seen by pediatric otolaryngologists. Prompt treatment of nasal obstruction can be critical in newborns and infants because of their obligatory nasal breathing. Older children will typically have more inflammatory, infectious, or traumatic causes of nasal obstruction. Nasal obstruction can lead to a significant decrease in the quality of life in children along with an increase health care expenditures.

Mesenchymal Extratesticular Tumors and Tumorlike Conditions: From the Radiologic Pathology Archives.

Both benign and malignant tumors and tumorlike conditions can arise from the nonepididymal extratesticular tissues. Benign tumors are far more common than malignant tumors, with lipoma being the most common lesion found at this site. Several imaging features can help narrow the differential diagnosis of these lesions, including the presence of fat and imaging features suggestive of fibrous tissue. Lesions that contain fat represent lipoma, liposarcoma, or angiomyofibroblastoma (AMF)-like tumor. If enhancing soft tissue is present in conjunction with fat, the differential diagnosis narrows furt

The role of embolisation in ENT: an update.

OBJECTIVE: To provide an update on the ever-increasing role that embolisation plays in the practice of otolaryngology. METHOD: A literature search was performed during November 2008. The Medline, Embase, PubMed and Cochrane databases were searched. This resulted in 285 papers relevant for review. CONCLUSION: The role of embolisation has expanded greatly to include the management of refractory epistaxis, pre-operative preparation of vascular tumours, vascular injuries and as an adjunct in skull base surgery.

Tuberous Sclerosis.

In the lecture we have generalized and analyzed the data of cytogenetic laboratory of National Research Center for Radiation Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine on 30-year selective cytogenetic monitoring among the priority contingents of different ages exposed to radiation after Chornobyl accident in Ukraine. It is highlighted that not only targeted but also untargeted radiation-induced cytogenetic effects should be explored, especially in delayed terms following radiation exposure. The new methodical approaches for studying "bystander effect", individual radiosens

Bilateral granulosa cell tumors: a novel malignant manifestation of multiple endocrine neoplasia 1 syndrome found in a patient with a rare menin in-frame deletion.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple endocrine neoplasia 1 (MEN1) is a cancer syndrome resulting from mutations of the MEN1 gene. The syndrome is characterized by neoplasia of the parathyroid and pituitary glands, and malignant tumors of the endocrine pancreas. Other manifestations include benign lipomas, angiofibromas, and carcinoid tumors commonly originating in the colon, thymus, and lung. This is the first report of MEN1 syndrome manifesting as bilateral granulosa cell ovarian tumors, and which is associated with a rare intronic mutation of the MEN1 gene. CASE REPORT: A 41-year-old woman presented with…

Important diagnostic criteria for TSC include facial angiofibromas, ungual fibromas, retinal hamartomas, and cortical tubers. Both familial and sporadic TSC cases occur. Approximately 50% of TSC families show genetic linkage to TSC1 and 50% to TSC2. Among sporadic TSC cases, mutations in TSC2 are more frequent and …
