Multi-domain predictors of oppositional defiant disorder symptoms in preschool children: cross-informant differences.

Existing research suggests that parent and teacher reports of children's behavior problems are often discrepant. The current study examined whether contextual (stress and family conflict), parent (depression), parenting (hostility, support, and scaffolding), and child factors (receptive vocabulary; negative affect, NA; effortful control, EC; inhibitory control, IC; attachment; and sensory regulation, SR) are related to parent-teacher reporting discrepancies. Participants included a community sample of 344 4-year-old children. A multi-informant approach was used to assess contextual, parent, pa

Twins' rearing environment similarity and childhood externalizing disorders: a test of the equal environments assumption.

The equal environments assumption (EEA) of the twin method posits that environmental influences that are etiologically relevant to a given phenotype are no more likely to be shared by monozygotic (MZ) than dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs. One method of testing the EEA is to evaluate whether increased rearing environment similarity in MZ twin pairs compared to DZ twin pairs is related to increased phenotypic correlation. In a sample of 885 twin pairs, we contrasted similarity in rearing environment between MZ and DZ twin pairs, examined the correlation between similarity in rearing environment and co

Should there be separate parent and teacher-based categories of ODD? Evidence from a general population.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the occurrence of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms in a general population of boys and girls, as reported by parents and teachers, and to investigate differences in prevalence estimates, depending on how parents' and teachers' ratings were combined. METHOD: Data were collected from 7007 children (aged 7-9) who participated in The Bergen Child Study (BCS), an ongoing population-based study of children's development and mental health. ODD symptoms were measured by the SNAP-IV (Swanson, Nolan, & Pelham-IV) Oppositional Defiant Disorder sub-scale (SNAP-IV ODD) th

Comorbidity aggregation models in children and adolescents with ADHD and direct and moderator effects of familial clinical history and psychosocial factors.

ADHD condition occurs with an extensive variety of comorbid mental disorders This study aims to individuate models of comorbidity aggregation in 1086 probands with ADHD and the direct and moderator effect of First Degree Relatives (FDRs) Mental Disorders and socio-environmental factors. Principal Component Analysis individuated four models of highly related comorbidities in affected probands. Inter-psychiatric and inter-neurodevelopmental comorbidities associations, with higher loading of Anxiety-Depressive-Conduct and "Intellectual-Language-Motor" subgroups of disorders were distinctly colloc

[Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder: a controversial new diagnostic entity in the DSM-5].

The Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) was included for the first time in the 5th Revision of the DSM. A transatlantic controversy surrounding the clinical picture and prevalence of early-onset bipolar disorder gave the occasion to develop a new diagnostic category in the chapter “Depressive Disorders” capturing a behavioral phenotype of non-episodic, chronic irritability and frequent temper tantrums. The present paper reviews the first available studies applying the new criteria. While DMDD can be clearly distinguished from bipolar disorder, preliminary evidence suggests a strong o

Child behavior checklist dysregulation profile in children with disruptive behavior disorders: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: A Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) profile defined as Dysregulation Profile (DP) (scores 2 standard deviations or more in anxiety/depression, aggression, attention subscales) has been correlated to poor emotional and behavioral self-regulation. The clinical meaning and the prognostic implications of CBCL-DP are still debated, although it seems associated with severe psychopathology and poor adjustment. METHOD: In the present study, we used the CBCL-DP score to examine the adolescent outcomes (psychiatric diagnosis, substance use, psychiatric hospitalization) in 80 referred children

Divalproex sodium reduces overall aggression in youth at high risk for bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: The psychopharmacology of aggression in youth is relatively unexplored, even though such maladaptive aggression manifests across many different diagnoses. METHODS: This study was a 12-week, open-label trial with divalproex sodium (DVPX) in 24 bipolar offspring 6-18 years of age (mean age = 11.3 years; 17 boys) with mixed diagnoses of major depression, cyclothymia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). The Overt Aggression Scale (OAS) was used to measure aggression in 4-week intervals. We measured serum gamma-butyric acid (GABA)

Risk factors of abuse of parents by their ADHD children.

It is interesting that there is scant research of abuse of parents by their children and no study was found on the abuse of parents by their attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children. Seventy-four children and adolescents suffering from ADHD and their parents were interviewed. The diagnoses were made according to DSM-IV diagnostic criteria. A questionnaire was developed to assess the children's abuse toward parents. More than half of the parents are suffering from at least one of the forms of abuse by their ADHD children. Scores of parental abuse were not related to gender. Diff

Emotional dysregulation, executive functions and callous-unemotional traits in children and adolescents with Oppositional Defiant Disorder/Conduct Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder: a direct comparison.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD) share many symptomatic dimensions. Emotional dysregulation (ED) and Callous-Unemotional (CU) traits have been described as transdiagnostic symptoms as well as executive dysfunctions. However, few previous studies compared these disorders directly at a clinical and a neuropsychological level. METHODS: 138 children and adolescents aged 10-17 years (n = 63 ODD/CD; n = 35 ASD and n = 40 TDC), with an intelligence quotient ≥80 were included. The three groups were compared on the emotional and

[From conduct disorder in childhood to psychopathy in adult life].

Mental health professionals seldom recognize psychopathy in their daily practice. Usually forensic psychiatrists and psychologists are involved because individuals with psychopathic personality are involved in serious criminal behavior and implicated with the law. Most of the times the profiles of children who evolve in adult psychopaths have components from other disorders, especially conduct disorder. The term psychopathy originates from the Greek words "psyche" (soul) and "pathos" (passion) and was used to identify initially every mental illness. Although in the bibliography the terms Antis

Reciprocal relations between interparental aggression and symptoms of oppositional defiant and conduct disorders: a seven-wave cohort study of within-family effects from preschool to adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Interparental aggression is believed to increase the risk of behavioral disorders in offspring, and offspring behavioral problems may forecast interparental aggression. However, these assumptions have yet to be put to a strong test. This study, therefore, examined whether increased interparental aggression predicted increased symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) from preschool to adolescence and vice versa. METHODS: A sample (n = 1,077; 49.6% girls) from two birth cohorts of children in Trondheim, Norway, was assessed biennially from age 4 to 1

Evaluation of a booster intervention three years after acute treatment for early-onset disruptive behavior disorders.

This study examines the impact of a brief booster treatment administered 3 years after the delivery of an acute treatment in a group (n = 118) of clinically referred boys and girls (ages 6 to 11) originally diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) or Conduct Disorder (CD). At the conclusion of the acute treatment and three-year follow-up period (i.e., study month 42), the sample was re-randomized into Booster treatment or Enhanced Usual Care and then assessed at four later timepoints (i.e., post-booster, and 6-, 12- and 24-month booster follow-up). Booster treatment was directed towa

Mind the gap: assessing impairment among children affected by proposed revisions to the diagnostic criteria for oppositional defiant disorder.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) workgroup for disruptive behavior disorders is considering adopting a frequency threshold for symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). In the present study, the impact of substituting the term "often" with a specific age-based frequency on impairment and prognosis among preschool children was tested in a longitudinal design. Mutually exclusive groups were created to identify children who met criteria for ODD based on a symptom threshold of "often," as in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disord

[Oppositional defiant disorder: aspects related to sex differences and informant].

INTRODUCTION: Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is one of the most common externalizing disorders in childhood. ODD prevalence global rates vary from 2% to 16%. Along with conduct disorder and attention deficit disorder, ODD is one of the leading reasons for referral to neuropediatric and psychiatric services. Even though ODD has recognized clinical importance, key aspects of its conceptualization and prevalence in childhood and adolescence remain uncertain. DEVELOPMENT: We examine previous research findings of ODD prevalence and analyze sex differences and differences according to informan

ADHD comorbidity findings from the MTA study: comparing comorbid subgroups.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has been inconclusive whether attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), when comorbid with disruptive disorders (oppositional defiant disorder [ODD] or conduct disorder [CD]), with the internalizing disorders (anxiety and/or depression), or with both, should constitute separate clinical entities. Determination of the clinical significance of potential ADHD + internalizing disorder or ADHD + ODD/CD syndromes could yield better diagnostic decision-making, treatment planning, and treatment outcomes. METHOD: Drawing upon cross-sectional and longitudinal inform

Is emotional dysregulation a risk indicator for auto-aggression behaviors in adolescents with oppositional defiant disorder?

BACKGROUND: The Child Behavior Checklist Dysregulation Profile (CBCL-DP), (high scores in Anxious/Depressed, Attention Problems, and Aggressive Behavior subscales), has been related to poor emotional and behavioral self-regulation in children and adolescents. Our aim is to evaluate if it may be associated with auto-aggression in youth with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Method In 72 consecutively referred youths with ODD, emotional dysregulation was assessed with the CBCL-DP, auto-aggression and physical aggression against other persons with the Modified Overt Aggression Scale. RESULTS:

Serotonergic functioning in children with oppositional defiant disorder: a sumatriptan challenge study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies support the notion that disturbances in the central serotonergic function are related to impulsive aggression. There is recent evidence from studies on 5-HT(1B) knock-out mice that this specific receptor is involved in impulsive aggressive behavior. The aim of the present study was to investigate 5-HT(1B/1D) receptor functioning in normal intelligent hospitalized children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). METHODS: The growth hormone (GH) response to a challenge with the 5-HT(1B/1D) agonist sumatriptan was examined in 20 children with an ODD, of whom 13 had

Association of Maternal Depressive Symptoms During the Perinatal Period With Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Children and Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: An association between perinatal maternal depression and risk of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in offspring has not been established. Identifying early determinants of ODD can help inform preventative intervention efforts. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between maternal perinatal depressive symptoms and the risk of ODD in offspring aged 7 to 15 years. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based longitudinal birth cohort study used data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), in Bristol, UK. Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and disruptive behavior disorders: prevalence, associations, and explanation of the relationships.

This exploratory study investigates how secondary school students resist or align with a social robot that challenges their reasoning in a curriculum-based mathematics task. Twenty-two students collaborated with a Furhat robot on a geometry problem whose three parts were familiar from class. In the critical part, all students produced task-relevant evidence for the correct solution, while the robot proposed and defended an incorrect solution through argument-based persuasion, without deliberately invoking peripheral persuasive cues. We examined resistance to the robot's informational social in
