BACKGROUND: The anti-G straining maneuver (AGSM), used by aircrew to enhance their +Gz tolerance and to reduce the potential risk of G-induced loss of consciousness, has been recognized as an effective technique. The purpose of this study was to establish an objective tool to evaluate the effectiveness of an aircrew member's AGSM.
METHODS: There were 20 healthy subjects who participated in the study, including 8 senior aviation physiological trainers and 12 trainees. The former were familiar with the anti-G maneuver and had experienced high +Gz exposure, the latter had never been exposed to a…

BACKGROUND: Though it is rarely reported, decompression sickness (DCS) is an expected risk for U-2 aviators. The potential for chronic sequelae of untreated DCS in this population has never been addressed.
METHODS: After conducting a preliminary survey at an active-duty U-2 squadron, a cohort of 416 U-2 pilots (active-duty and retired) were mailed two sequential anonymous surveys to assess demographic data, career prevalence of DCS symptoms, and overall health status with an emphasis on chronic musculoskeletal problems.
RESULTS: The response rate for each mail-in survey was over 60%. During

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are benign and rare tumors of the brain. The growth rates of these tumors are unpredictable. These cysts can increase in size and obstruct the cerebrospinal fluid pathways producing obstructive hydrocephalus. Consequently, this can manifest as acute severe headaches followed by deterioration in consciousness, or even sudden death in patients. Such remarkable episodes occurring in patients during air travel have been reported sparsely in the literature.
CASE DESCRIPTION: In this report, we narrate the ordeal of a patient who had severe headache followed by loss of con

BACKGROUND: The U.S. Navy's casualty-receiving ships provide remote damage control resuscitation platforms to treat injured combatants deployed afloat and ashore. We report a significant mass casualty incident aboard the USS Bataan, and the most warm fresh whole blood (WFWB) transfused at sea for traumatic hemorrhagic shock since the Vietnam War.
METHODS: Casualty-receiving ships have robust medical capabilities, including a frozen blood bank with packed red blood cells (pRBC) and fresh frozen plasma (FFP). The blood supply can be augmented with WFWB collected from a "walking blood bank."

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological studies suggest that pilots and cabin crew have higher incidences and mortality rates of cutaneous malignant melanoma than those of the general population. Exposure to UV radiation is one of the main risk factors for this type of cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of UV radiation in an airliner in flight.
METHODS: Measurements were taken with a three sensor-integrated electronics UV radiometer (A, B, and C) during 14 flights from July to October 2016. They were performed during daylight hours once the airliner had reached cruising altitude.

Splenic infarction in individuals harboring the sickle cell trait can occur in the setting of exposure to low oxygen tension at high altitudes. While this is a concern in unpressurized aircraft flight, it has not been well documented in pressurized flight. What has not been addressed is whether this relative safety of pressurized flight extends to the postinfarction period and whether or not pressurized flight in the immediate post-infarction period, especially air evacuation, would change the patient's outcome. We present two cases of splenic infarction suffered during climbing Mt. Fuji (12,3

Object of investigation was types of personality of civil pilots. The investigation involved healthy pilots (n = 58, controls) and pilots afflicted with cerebral atherosclerosis (n = 67) including pilots with atherosclerotic plaques (n = 23). The personality questionnaire developed by L.N. Sobchik was used. The investigation showed that signs of personality accentuation in pilots with cerebral atherosclerosis were largely manifested by distortion of individual psychological attributes. This finding may be helpful to members of the medical flight certification board in making prognosis of pilot

Cancer, and the complications of cancer therapy, can present significant obstacles to the airman wishing to return to flying status. If found to be free of recurrent lymphoma and to be neurologically intact after completion of therapy, applicants can be considered for a time-limited medical certificate, provided that they are otherwise qualified. Long-term follow up of patients must include not only disease-free survival time, but also serial neuropsychometric evaluation and quality-of-life assessments. This case illustrates the aeromedical considerations and certification issues for a patient

INTRODUCTION: There have been few studies of the risk factors for fatal injury in air crashes of rotary-wing aircraft, and none of risk factors for all serious injury (fatal and non-fatal) in these aircraft. The aim of the study was to identify the potentially modifiable risk factors for injury in civil rotary-wing aircraft crashes in New Zealand.
METHOD: We analyzed records from all reported civil rotary-wing aircraft crashes in New Zealand between 1988 and 1994. Air crash data from the official databases were merged with nationwide injury records and information obtained from Coroner's file

Military aerospace medicine requires a psychiatric selection and certification process that determines not only the absence of significant mental disorders, but also the presence of positive qualities in the realms of motivation, ability and stability: not all normal people are fit to fly. Other issues of aerospace psychiatry involve maintenance of mental resilience and hardiness during a flying career, aeromedical decisions about when to remove from flight duties and when to return, criteria for waivers for psychiatric conditions, use of medications for treatment of psychiatric symptoms, ques

We report an outbreak of irritant contact dermatitis in the aerospace industry from electrodischarge machining (EDM). 20 workers doing EDM developed irritant contact dermatitis from the dielectric fluid used in EDM, a form of precision metal machining that is widely used in mould making and precision engineering. Dielectric fluid contains hydrocarbons that are aromatic, paraffinic or naphthenic and are skin irritants. Irritant contact dermatitis from dielectric fluid has not been reported previously. EDM will become more widespread and occupational dermatitis from dielectric fluid is likely to

The oligomerization of light C2-C4 olefins has emerged as one of the most studied processes for the sustainable production of different refinery cuts of interest as green fuels, such as gasoline, diesel, or aviation fuels. However, oligomerization is a complex process in which the presence of a gas and liquid phase (heavy oligomers) leads to unique phenomena in this reaction: an apparent initial deactivation of the catalyst due to the pore filling with retained oligomers and a steady state of catalyst constant activity. These features make it difficult to develop robust kinetic models to simul…

Climbers and aviators are exposed to severe hypoxia at high altitudes, whereas divers are exposed to hyperoxia at depth. The aim of this study was to report changes in the adenosinergic system induced by exposure to extreme oxygen partial pressures. At high altitudes, the increased adenosine concentration contributes to brain protection against hypoxia through various mechanisms such as stimulation of glycogenolysis for ATP production, reduction in neuronal energy requirements, enhancement in 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate production, and increase in cerebral blood flow secondary to vasodilation of c

Titanium alloys are extensively employed in the fabrication of various aviation structural parts, of which the most crucial processing step is hot working. In order to study the high-temperature deformation behavior of the TC21 titanium alloy, high-temperature tensile tests were performed. The results reveal that the flow stress of the material gradually decreases with an increased strain rate, and the stress increases rapidly with an increase in strain during the deformation of the alloy. Following this, flow stress gradually decreases. Flow stress decreases sharply, and the sample fractures …

Fracture during the assembly process is an important failure mode for high-lock bolts used in the aviation industry, which greatly increases the potential of unpredictable accidents during service. In the current study, the underlying reasons for fracture during the assembly of a TC4 high-lock bolt was investigated using a tensile test and finite element analysis (FEA). The microstructure of the as-received bolt consisted of a high proportion of α phase, some β phase, and a small amount of α' phase formed via martensite phase transformation during the rammer process. The experimental force-dis…
