Patients referred from the Houston, Texas, metropolitan area were evaluated for allergic reactions to insect stings. Forty-eight persons reported at least one systemic reaction caused by a Polistes paper-nest wasp sting. Honey bees, imported fire ants, and other types of Hymenoptera were identified in that order by 19 other subjects with systemic allergic reactions. Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by excess granulocytes at different stages of maturation and the presence of BCR-ABL1 fusion gene or Philadelphia chromosome. Absolute eosinophilia, basophilia, and monocytosis are not uncommon in CML. However, a rare entity called eosinophilic variant of CML (eoCML) can present with eosinophilia without excess neutrophils or basophils. Here, we report a rare and unusual case of eoCML presenting as a liver mass with abnormal liver function tests, which has not been reported in the literature so far.

A novel approach is described for the treatment of IgE-mediated allergic reactions which is based on the induction of a strong anti-IgE response in the host. Vaccination of ovalbumin-sensitized rats with constant domains two and three of rat IgE coupled to a heterologous carrier protein resulted in a profound decrease in serum levels of IgE, and later in a nearly complete block of histamine release from mast cells and basophils upon challenge with either a cross-linking polyclonal anti-IgE antiserum or a specific allergen.

Three cases of relapsing polychondritis are reported. They all complained of dyspnea, which derived from tracheal involvement. Other clinical manifestations were saddle nose (3 cases), painful swelling of ear (2 cases), arthralgia (1 case) ophthalmodynia (1 case). The postmortem study of a classic case of Werner's syndrome is presented. The subject was a Japanese man who died at the age of 39. Major findings included general microsplanchnia, extreme atrophy of the testes and skin, calcified aortic atherosclerosis, an increase of basophils in the pituitary, aspiration pneumonia, chronic pyelonephritis and a meningioma in the occipital area of the brain. BACKGROUND: Patent Blue V (PBV) is injected in order to map sentinel nodes during cancer staging procedures. Anaphylactic reactions, allegedly IgE antibody mediated, have been reported. The aim of the study was to explore the immunological mechanism of anaphylaxis to PBV.
METHODS: PBV allergen threshold basophil sensitivity, CD-sens, was performed on cells from nine patients diagnosed as having had adverse reactions to PBV. The mechanisms of the CD-sens were studied by immunological and immuno-chemical methods.
