This article documents a rare surviving material testimony of a battlefield blood transfusion performed during the First World War. The study reconstructs a "heroic" father-to-son arteriovenous transfusion carried out in Cherbourg Naval Hospital on January 24th, 1915. Analysis of the preserved glass cannula highlights an original French adaptation of the Alexis Carrel transfusion method. The paper explores the evolution of early transfusion technologies and vascular techniques before the standardization of modern blood banking. This memorial object illustrates the intersection of wartime surge…

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative autologous blood transfusion (IABT) is contraindicated during oncologic resection owing to concern for metastasis. However, there is a paucity of data to substantiate this claim, and the true risk of IABT in patients with cancer remains unknown.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We identified patients who underwent oncologic resection with IABT during 2010-2021 at our institution. The primary outcome was early metastasis. A subgroup analysis of patients who underwent liver transplants for malignancy was conducted using inverse probability of treatment weighting to compare survi…

Hemoglobin (Hb) is a critical component of arterial oxygen content, and thus of oxygen delivery to the brain. As a result, anemia is a major concern in patients with acute brain injury such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), or intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). In these patients, anemia has been associated with higher mortality and worse neurological outcomes. However, the safety and benefit of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion remained uncertain in observational studies. Until recently, there was limited evidence to guide the optimal transfusion threshold:

BACKGROUND: Acute blood loss anemia is a common complication of hip fractures. Due to this complication, the rate of allogenic blood transfusions remains high in this patient population. More recently, surgeons have utilized intraoperative tranexamic acid as a strategy to minimize blood loss.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors and associated outcomes of blood transfusions in hip fracture patients.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
METHODS: A trauma database from one academic medical center was queried for hip fracture patients (OTA/AO 31A or 31B). Demogr…

In recent years, due to the shortage of blood products, some extensive burn patients were forced to adopt an "ultra-restrictive" transfusion strategy, in which the hemoglobin levels of RBC transfusion thresholds were < 7 g/dl or even < 6 g/dl. This study investigated the prognostic impacts of ultra-restrictive RBC transfusion in extensive burn patients. This retrospective multicenter cohort study recruited extensive burns (total body surface area ≥ 50%) from three hospitals in Eastern China between 1 January 2016 and 30 June 2022. Patients were divided into an ultra-restrictive transfusion gro

Background: Intraoperative blood transfusion (IOBT) during liver transplantation (LT) has negative outcomes, and it has been shown that an increasing number of these procedures may no longer require IOBT. Regarding living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), the literature on the pre-transplant predictors of IOBT is quite heterogeneous and deficient. In this study, we reviewed our experience of IOBT among a homogenous cohort of adult right-lobe LDLTs. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data on adult LDLT recipients between January 2018 and October 2023. Tw…

In Nepal, rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is alarmingly prevalent, marked by presentations like migratory joint arthritis, carditis, subcutaneous nodules, erythema marginatum, and Sydenham chorea. This condition can progress to instigate valvular defects. Although these patients are first approached medically, they may require surgery for severe cases. Refusal for blood transfusion might not be a major issue for other general surgeries; however, in cardiac surgery, where there is massive blood loss, it's quite a challenge. This challenge becomes even more pronounced in a developing country that …

Severe anemia is commonly treated with red blood cell transfusion. Clinical trials have demonstrated that a restrictive transfusion strategy of 7 to 8 g/dL is as safe as a liberal transfusion strategy of 9 to 10 g/dL in many clinical settings. Evidence is lacking for subgroups of patients, including those with preexisting coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and myelodysplastic neoplasms. We present 3 clinical vignettes that highlight the clinical challenges in caring for patients with coronary artery disease with gastrointestinal bleeding, congestive

We report Listeria monocytogenes infection in a patient in Italy who was transfused with pooled platelet concentrate. Genomic analysis revealed that L. monocytogenes isolates from the donor blood unit, the transfused platelets, and the patient's blood culture were genetically closely related, confirming transfusion transmission. Additional surveillance and secondary bacterial screening could improve transfusion safety.

Hyperkalaemia following transfusion is widely reported in the literature. Our objective was to critically review recent evidence on hyperkalaemia in association with transfusion and to assess whether specific aspects of transfusion practice can affect the likelihood of developing hyperkalaemia. We searched 9 electronic databases (including MEDLINE, Embase, and Transfusion Evidence Library) using a predefined search strategy, from 2010 to April 8, 2021. Three reviewers performed dual screening, extraction, and risk of bias assessment. We used Cochrane risk of bias (ROB) 2 for assessment of RCTs

BACKGROUNDRBC transfusion effectiveness varies due to donor, component, and recipient factors. Prior studies identified characteristics associated with variation in hemoglobin increments following transfusion. We extended these observations, examining donor genetic and nongenetic factors affecting transfusion effectiveness.METHODSThis is a multicenter retrospective study of 46,705 patients and 102,043 evaluable RBC transfusions from 2013 to 2016 across 12 hospitals. Transfusion effectiveness was defined as hemoglobin, bilirubin, or creatinine increments following single RBC unit transfusion. M

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To determine the rate of individual and system adverse events associated with blood transfusion at home.
BACKGROUND: Home or residential care facility based blood transfusion is beneficial for individuals requiring transfusion due to reduced disruption to daily life and the comfort of a familiar environment. However, blood transfusion may result in serious adverse events. There is a lack of research in this area, and there is a need to identify rates of adverse events and evaluate the system used for this service.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
METHODS: Existing da…
