BACKGROUND: A gap between the bottom of gowns and the top of gumboots (commonly known as wellingtons or rubber boots outside of New Zealand) makes it possible for blood splashes to enter surgeons' gumboots and contact skin, putting them at risk of exposure to HBV, HCV and HIV. This study investigated the prevalence of blood splashes inside gumboots used by surgical staff at a single hospital.
METHOD: Ninety-four pairs of gumboots (91 from male surgeons, 3 from female surgeons) from the hospital operating theatres were used in this study. Each pair of boots was visually inspected for internal

While orthopedic injuries most commonly are associated with sports, infectious diseases cause significant morbidity in athletes. Exercise improves immunity at moderate intensity but impairs immune function at extremes of duration and intensity. Respiratory infections are the most common, but skin, blood borne, sexually transmitted, and even cardiac infections occur. Infectious disease outbreaks are a constant concern. Treatment of such infections resembles those used in the general population. Return to play issues and prevention of infection are especially important in athletes.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is mostly transmitted through blood-to-blood contact during injection drug use via shared contaminated syringes/needles or injection paraphernalia. This paper used meta-analytic methods to assess whether HCV prevalence and incidence varied across different racial/ethnic groups of injection drug users (IDUs) sampled internationally. The 29 prevalence and 11 incidence studies identified as part of the HCV Synthesis Project were categorized into subgroups based on similar racial/ethnic comparisons. The effect estimate used was the odds or risk ratio comparing HCV prevalenc

The Hemophilia Growth and Development Study (HGDS) is a multicenter longitudinal study of 333 male children and adolescents with moderate or severe hemophilia, ranging in age from 6 to 19 at entry. Sixty-two percent of the cohort was infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the late 1970s and early 1980s through exposure to contaminated clotting factor concentrates. The HGDS has followed this cohort since 1989. HGDS subjects have blood drawn twice each year for t-lymphocyte subsets, with fresh blood shipped overnight to a central laboratory. T-lymphocyte subsets from the same blood

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been shown to inactivate blood-borne pathogenic microorganisms in vitro. The method may be used to purify blood in the body, kill pathogenic microorganisms, and treat difficult diseases. Our aim was to investigate the safety of photodynamic blood purification (PBP) therapy using an in vivo blood circulation experiment in an animal model. Twenty-four New Zealand rabbits were used as experimental subjects; 12 received PDT and 12 served as negative controls. Extracorporeal blood bypass was established using the femoral artery and vein. BACKGROUND: Transfusion-acquired hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains an important problem among patients with thalassemia. In this study, we evaluated the natural history of post-transfusional hepatitis C in thalassemia major, paying special attention to spontaneous viral clearance, to factors influencing the chronicity rate and fibrosis progression.
DESIGN AND METHODS: A prospective study to evaluate the incidence and etiology of transfusion-related hepatitis was started in 1980. In patients who developed hepatitis C, HCV RNA, ALT, and ferritin were measured over time. The correlation between in

Tick bites and tick-related diseases are on the rise. Diagnostic tests that identify well-characterised tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) possess limited capacity to address the causation of symptoms associated with poorly characterised tick-related illnesses, such as debilitating symptom complexes attributed to ticks (DSCATT) in Australia. Identification of local signals in tick-bitten skin that can be detected systemically in blood would have both clinical (diagnostic or prognostic) and research (mechanistic insight) utility, as a blood sample is more readily obtainable than tissue biopsies. We hy

Ticks carry numerous pathogens that, if transmitted, can cause disease in susceptible humans and animals. The present study describes our approach on how to investigate clinical presentations following tick bites in humans. To this aim, the occurrence of major tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in human blood samples (n = 85) and the ticks collected (n = 93) from the same individuals were tested using an unbiased high-throughput pathogen detection microfluidic system. The clinical symptoms were characterized in enrolled patients. In patients with suspected TBP infection, serological assays were condu

Yersinia enterocolitica, a gram-negative coccobacillus, comprises a heterogeneous group of bacterial strains recovered from animal and environmental reservoirs. The majority of human pathogenic strains are found among distinct serogroups (e.g. O:3, O:5,27, O:8, O:9) and contain both chromosome- and plasmid (60 to 75 kb)-mediated virulence factors that are absent in "avirulent" strains. While Y. enterocolitica is primarily a gastrointestinal tract pathogen, it may produce extraintestinal infections in hosts with underlying predisposing factors. Postinfection sequelae include arthritis and eryth

Flaviviruses are arthropod-borne RNA viruses found worldwide that, when introduced into the human body, cause diseases, including neuroinfections, that can lead to serious metabolic consequences and even death. Some of the diseases caused by flaviviruses occur continuously in certain regions, while others occur intermittently or sporadically, causing epidemics. Some of the most common flaviviruses are West Nile virus, dengue virus, tick-borne encephalitis virus, Zika virus and Japanese encephalitis virus. Since all the above-mentioned viruses are capable of penetrating the blood-brain barrier

Glanzmann thrombasthenia (GT) is a rare inherited autosomal recessive bleeding disorder of platelet function caused by a quantitative or qualitative defect of platelet membrane glycoprotein IIb/IIIa (integrin αIIbβ3), a fibrinogen receptor required for platelet aggregation. Bleeds in GT are variable and may be severe and unpredictable. Bleeding not responsive to local and adjunctive measures, as well as surgical procedures, is treated with platelets, recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa), or antifibrinolytics, alone or in combination. Although platelets are the standard treatment for GT, t

Health care workers are exposed daily to blood borne injury and infection with a high risk of hepatitis B or C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. In the 1980s, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed a set of protocols and guidelines known as standard precautions (SP) to prevent accidental transmission of pathogens. The SP should be followed for each intervention or delivery of care in order to protect health care workers from risks associated with contact with blood and other biological liquids. A survey was conducted in a Western Algerian universit

Neonatal calf diarrhoea is one of the challenges faced by intensive farming, and probiotics are considered a promising approach to improve calves' health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of potential probiotic lactobacilli on new-born dairy calves' growth, diarrhoea incidence, faecal score, cytokine expression in blood cells, immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels in plasma and faeces, and pathogen abundance in faeces. Two in vivo assays were conducted at the same farm in two annual calving seasons. Treated calves received one daily dose of the selected lactobacilli (Lactobacillu

Sporadic Zika virus infections had only occurred in Africa and Asia until an outbreak in Micronesia (Oceania) in 2007. In 2013 to 2014, several outer Pacific Islands reported local outbreaks. Soon thereafter, the virus was likely introduced in Brazil from competing athletes from French Polynesia and other countries that participated in a competition there. Transmission is thought to have occurred through mosquito bites and spread to the immunologically naive population. Being also a flavivirus, the Zika virus is transmitted by the Aedes mosquito that is endemic in South and Central America tha
