Bilobectomy for Neglected Foreign Body Aspiration: A Case Report.

Bilobectomy for the extraction of an aspirated foreign body (FB) is a major surgical procedure and is exceedingly rare. We present a case of a 16-year-old male with a prolonged history of recurring chest infections, which had been treated as community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). A thorough review of medical history and diagnostic imaging studies revealed that the patient had experienced a foreign body aspiration (FBA) involving a push pin four years ago. The FB was successfully removed via right thoracotomy and subsequent bilobectomy of the middle and lower lobes, and the patient had an uneventf

Subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum in child with asthma revealing occult foreign body aspiration: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Exacerbations of asthma constitute the most common cause of pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema in children. Foreign body aspiration is a rare cause of pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema. Foreign body aspiration leading to the occurrence of pneumomediastinum in a child with asthma may go unnoticed and be wrongly attributed to asthma, which leads to delayed diagnosis as well as to life-threatening and long-term complications. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of a 6-year-old Moroccan boy with asthma who was admitted to our emergency department for acute dyspn

'I don't think there's much of a rational mind in a drug addict when they are in the thick of it': towards an embodied analysis of recovering heroin users.

Much of the sociological literature on recovery from heroin use has been located within the symbolic interactionist tradition and has revealed the salience of identity for the recovery process, and has focused upon actors' cognitions. By contrast, less attention has been paid to former users' bodies. The aim of this paper therefore is to focus upon the embodied aspects of recovery from heroin use. To this end, we deploy the notions of bodily 'dys-appearance' and 'habitual action' as sensitising concepts to undertake an analysis of data generated by 40 qualitative interviews carried out with 21

Lack of association between leptin levels and leptin gene polymorphism in obese women.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between oligopolymorphism in the 25th codon of leptin gene and obesity. Eighty-seven obese women and 75 healthy women were constituted obese and control groups. Body fat percent, fat mass and lean body mass were determined by bioimpedance meter and leptin levels were determined. The presence of 25th codon oligopolymorphism in the leptin gene was done by PCR-RFLP technique. Mean leptin levels were 38.5±22.0 ng/ml, and 147.9±44.8 ng/ml in the control and obese groups, respectively. The correlations of serum leptin level to body fat pe

Cografting of carotid body cells improves the long-term survival, fiber outgrowth and functional effects of grafted dopaminergic neurons.

AIMS: A major limiting factor for cell therapy in Parkinson's disease is that the survival of grafted dopaminergic neurons is very poor, which may be improved by administration of GDNF, for which the carotid body is a good source. MATERIALS & METHODS: Rats with total unilateral dopaminergic denervation were grafted with a cell suspension of rat dopaminergic neuroblasts with or without cell aggregates from the rat carotid body. At 1, 2 and 3 months after grafting, the rats were tested in the cylinder and the rotometer and killed 4 months after grafting. RESULTS: We observed that the survival

Differential labeling of the pinealocytes and pineal interstitial cells by a series of monoclonal antibodies to human pineal body.

Ten hybridomas producing monoclonal antibodies against pineal antigens were established by hybridizing mouse myeloma cells with spleen cells from BALB/c mice immunized with human pineal body homogenate. Seven antibodies immunohistochemically reacted with the pinealocytes and three reacted with the pineal interstitial cells. According to the antibodies applied, the pinealocytes were immunostained in a variable manner; granularly with PP1, PP4 and PP6 antibodies, diffusely with PP2 and PP5, membraneously with PP3, and apically with PP7. The PI1 and P12 antibodies immunolabeled most of the inters

Pregnancy-induced metabolic reprogramming and regenerative responses to pro-aging stresses.

Pregnancy is associated with physiological adaptations that affect virtually all organs, enabling the mother to support the growing fetus and placenta while withstanding the demands of pregnancy. As a result, mammalian pregnancy is a unique state that exerts paradoxical effects on maternal health. On one hand, the metabolic stress induced by pregnancy can accelerate aging and functional decline in organs. On the other hand, pregnancy activates metabolic programming and tissue regenerative responses that can reverse age-related impairments. In this sense, the oocyte-to-blastocyst transition is

Regulation of Neural Functions by Brain Temperature and Thermo-TRP Channels.

Body temperature is an important determinant in regulating the activities of animals. In humans, a mild 0.5 °C hyperthermia can cause headaches, demonstrating that the maintenance of normal body temperature is a key for our health. In a more extreme example, accidental acute hypothermia can lead to severe shivering, loss of consciousness, or death, although the details of these mechanisms are poorly understood. We previously found that the TRPV4 ion channel is constitutively activated by normal body temperature. The activation threshold of TRPV4 is >34 °C in the brain, which enables TRPV4 to c

Altered body schema processing in frontotemporal dementia with C9ORF72 mutations.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in C9ORF72 are an important cause of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and motor neuron disease. Accumulating evidence suggests that FTD associated with C9ORF72 mutations (C9ORF72-FTD) is distinguished clinically by early prominent neuropsychiatric features that might collectively reflect deranged body schema processing. However, the pathophysiology of C9ORF72-FTD has not been elucidated. METHODS: We undertook a detailed neurophysiological investigation of five patients with C9ORF72-FTD, in relation to patients with FTD occurring sporadically and on the basis of mutations in

The medical practice of the sexed body: women, men and disease in Britain , circa 1600-1740.

Although it has been widely argued that pre-Enlightenment western medicine ascribed to a one-sex (male) model of the body, this theory has never been evaluated in terms of medical practice. This article seeks to determine the usefulness of such a model for early modern Britain, circa 1600-1740, by examining how medical practitioners responded to three common illnesses that afflicted both male and female patients: venereal disease, smallpox, and malaria. It concludes that, despite a number of similarities, medical treatment of such illnesses was marked by important differences which were based

Rhythmic expression of the cycle gene in a hematophagous insect vector.

BACKGROUND: A large number of organisms have internal circadian clocks that enable them to adapt to the cyclic changes of the external environment. In the model organism Drosophila melanogaster, feedback loops of transcription and translation are believed to be crucial for the maintenance of the central pacemaker. In this mechanism the cycle (or bmal1) gene, which is constitutively expressed, plays a critical role activating the expression of genes that will later inhibit their own activity, thereby closing the loop. Unlike Drosophila, the molecular clock of insect vectors is poorly understood

Recovery from the hepatic acute phase response in the severely burned and the effects of long-term growth hormone treatment.

BACKGROUND: Administration of growth hormone (GH) to burned children decreases acute phase proteins and increases constitutive proteins when used during the acute hospitalization. Treatment during convalescence has not been examined. METHODS: Seventy-six children with total body surface area burned (TBSAB) >/=40% were randomized to either placebo or GH (0.05 mg/kg/day) from discharge to 1 year after burn. Subjects were followed for an additional year. Levels of constitutive proteins and acute phase proteins were measured at discharge and 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months. Data are expressed as mean

Expelled from Eden: How human beings turned planet Earth into a hostile place.

The focus of this article is the mind-body problem in mainstream modern psychology examined from a decolonial perspective. The construction of the idea of the separation of mind and body is a seminal point of division of labor in the history of modern capitalism. This division perpetuated by the mind-body dualism idea was necessary to justify the enslavement of some and employment to others. Colonization processes have had profound importance on the mind, feelings, behaviors, and political settings. Throughout its history, the subject treated in EuroAmerican psychology has sought to deal with

Metallic foreign body deep in the prevertebral space after an endomyocardial biopsy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Although inspirated or ingested foreign bodies constitute a common otolaryngologic emergency, the removal of a solitary retained foreign body from the neck has seldom been described in the literature. The ingestion of foreign bodies commonly results in perforated viscose or extraluminal migration to adjacent structures quite a long period of time after the fact. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first English language description of an endomyocardial biopsy complicated by a retained foreign body deep in the prevertebral space of the patient's neck. We report such a case a

Shrapnel in carotid sheath: A rare penetrating neck injury.

Injuries deeper than the platysma are considered as penetrating neck injuries, constituting approximately 5% - 10% of all trauma. Many vital organs are at risk from a penetrating neck injury. These injuries in zone 1 have the highest mortality, because the injuries are close to the vital organs and difficult to access surgically. A 41-year-old male, a car mechanic by profession, presented to the emergency department with a penetrating neck injury on the right side. CT scan demonstrated a metallic foreign body in zone 1 between the right internal jugular vein and the common carotid artery. The

Navigating Challenges in Adult Airway Foreign Body Extraction: Retrospective Insights From Flexible Bronchoscopy.

Background Airway foreign body aspiration is an emergency predominantly observed in children and the elderly. However, it also occurs in adults, presenting with a variety of symptoms. Both rigid and flexible bronchoscopies are employed for foreign body retrieval. In this context, we share our experience with foreign body extraction using flexible bronchoscopy in adult patients.  Methods  We conducted a retrospective study from January 2018 to August 2019 in the bronchoscopy suite of our institute's Department of Pulmonary Medicine. This study centered on the total bronchoscopies performed, the

In Colombia, the curious request of a citizen whose leg had to be amputated for health reasons surprised the judges. This person indeed demanded the return of his amputated leg, because, according to his religious beliefs, his body was to be buried in its entirety after his death. The case ended up in the Constitutional Court, which ordered the application of meaningful measures when fundamental rights such as the right to freedom of worship come up against public health policy.

Pedal nail pathology: biomechanical implications.

Proper treatment of pedal nail disorders requires a thorough understanding of the underlying etiology. As a class, biomechanical abnormalities constitute an important cause of pedal nail dystrophy. These biomechanical etiologies have been presented with regard to the three body planes. Treatments using biomechanical and orthopedic principles were explored, with an emphasis on counteracting abnormal dynamic and static forces. Additionally, sports that have a high correlation of nail pathologies have been discussed with prevention as the key element to treatment.

Neuronal function and dysfunction of Drosophila dTDP.

BACKGROUND: TDP-43 is an RNA- and DNA-binding protein well conserved in animals including the mammals, Drosophila, and C. elegans. In mammals, the multi-function TDP-43 encoded by the TARDBP gene is a signature protein of the ubiquitin-positive inclusions (UBIs) in the diseased neuronal/glial cells of a range of neurodegenerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD-U). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We have studied the function and dysfunction of the Drosophila ortholog of the mammalian TARDBP gene, dTDP, by genetic, behavioral,
