Mechanisms of Water-Lock Removal by a Nanoemulsion/Mud Acid Composite System in Low-Permeability Sandstone Reservoirs: Insights from Pore-Scale Characterization in the MB Block.

Water-lock damage in low-permeability sandstone reservoirs is primarily caused by small pore-throat structures, strong capillary forces, and hydrophilic rock surfaces. Conventional treatment methods mainly target either fluid-interface modification or pore blockage problems separately. In this study, a nanoemulsion/mud acid composite system was developed to achieve a combined effect of fluid interfaces and localized mineral dissolution. Interfacial tension (IFT) measurements, contact angle analysis, constant-rate mercury intrusion (CRMI), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and high-temperature

Green Polymeric Nanocomposite (KCl/SiO2/Xanthan/Origanum vulgare) for Multi-Scale Interfacial Stabilization and Permeability Preservation in Carbonate Petroleum Reservoirs.

In carbonate petroleum reservoirs, permeability impairment caused by asphaltene precipitation and deposition remains a major challenge that limits long-term productivity. This study introduces a green polymeric nanocomposite (KCl/SiO2/Xanthan/Origanum vulgare, NCs) designed to control interfacial dynamics and preserve flow capacity in carbonate formations. Using a multi-technique approach-interfacial tension (IFT) analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and rock-core, fluid-flooding experiments at simulated subsurface conditions-the NCs' abilities were evaluated in terms of their potential to

Albumin: role and discriminative use in surgery.

Exogenous human serum albumin (HSA) is generally used empirically and its role in surgery is poorly defined. The function and kinetics of HSA in the body are reviewed to provide rational guidelines for its use in surgery. Starling's law of transcapillary exchange is important, especially when applied to the capillary beds of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, skeletal muscle, lungs and intestines; but it overestimates the importance of maintaining oncotic pressure in the two situations where HSA is clinically beneficial--hypovolemia and plasma volume sequestration. In hypovolemia, the harmful e

Electromagnetic fields (GSM 1800) do not alter blood-brain barrier permeability to sucrose in models in vitro with high barrier tightness.

We previously reported that electromagnetic fields (EMFs) [GSM 1800 standard (Global System for Mobile Communications, 1800 MHz)] increased sucrose permeation across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in vitro. The cell culture model used in our previous study was comprised of rat astrocytes in coculture with porcine brain microvascular endothelial cells (PBECs). In this study, after optimization of cell culture conditions, distinctly improved barrier tightness was observed, accompanied by a loss of susceptibility to EMF-related effects on BBB permeability. Cell cultures were exposed for 1-5 days a

Associations between potential risk factors and blood-brain barrier water permeability in middle-aged and older adults.

Background: Blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction is suggested to be a potential mediator between vascular risk factors and cognitive impairment, leading to vascular cognitive impairment. Objective: To investigate the relationships between age, sex, and vascular risk factors and BBB water permeability as well as their relationship with cognition. Methods: To measure BBB permeability, a novel arterial spin labelling MRI technique (ME-ASL) was applied to derive the time of exchange (Tex), arterial time transit (ATT), and cerebral blood flow (CBF). The association of potential risk factors, such

Targets for pharmacological intervention of endothelial hyperpermeability and barrier function.

Many diseases share the common feature of vascular leakage, and endothelial barrier dysfunction is often the underlying cause. The subsequent stages of endothelial barrier dysfunction contribute to endothelial hyperpermeability. Vasoactive agents induce loss of junctional integrity, a process that involves actin-myosin interaction. Subsequently, the interaction of leukocytes amplifies leakage by the leukocyte-derived mediators. The processes mainly occur at the postcapillary venules. The whole microvascular bed, including the capillaries, becomes involved in vascular leakage by the induction o

Myosin Light Chain Kinase-Mediated Endothelial Hyperpermeability Underlies Temsirolimus-Induced Lung Injury.

Pulmonary toxicity is a common adverse effect of temsirolimus (a first-generation mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor), but its mechanisms are unclear. Disruption of endothelial-barrier integrity is key in the pathophysiology of lung injury. We investigated the role and mechanisms of endothelial-barrier dysfunction in the pathogenesis of temsirolimus-induced lung injury. We evaluated the impact of temsirolimus on the permeability of human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMECs) using transendothelial electrical resistance and albumin leakage while simultaneously investiga

Perfusion and Permeability MRI Predicts Future Cavernous Angioma Hemorrhage and Growth.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral cavernous angioma (CA) is a capillary vasculopathy affecting more than a million Americans with a small fraction of cases demonstrating lesional bleed or growth with major clinical sequelae. Perfusion and permeability are fundamental features of CA pathophysiology, but their role as prognostic biomarkers is unclear. PURPOSE: To investigate whether perfusion or permeability lesional descriptors derived from dynamic contrast-enhanced quantitative perfusion (DCEQP) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can predict subsequent lesional bleed/growth in the year following imaging. Implementation and Evaluation of Fully 3D Richards' Equation in MODFLOW 6.

This paper presents the development and benchmarking of a fully three-dimensional (3D) Richards' equation solver integrated into MODFLOW 6. The popular unsaturated zone package (the UZF package) currently in MODFLOW relies on simplified approaches that neglect capillary effects and assumes one-dimensional (1D) vertical flow. In contrast, the Richards' equation implementation presented here is based on a 3D head-based mixed formulation using the van Genuchten moisture retention and relative permeability functions to capture the more detailed physics of variably saturated flow. The numerical imp

Porous layer open-tubular column with styrene and itaconic acid-copolymerized polymer as stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography-mass spectrometry.

Enhancing the specific surface area of stationary phase is important in chromatographic science, especially in open-tubular column in which the coating only exists on the inner surface. In this work, a porous layer open-tubular (PLOT) column with stationary phase of styrene and itaconic acid-copolymerized polymer was developed. Thermal-initiated polymerization method with strategies like controlling the ratio of reaction reagents to solvents and reaction time, confinement by the narrow inner diameter of capillary were used for preparing the stationary phase with uniform structure and relativel

Lysophosphatidic acid receptor, LPA6, regulates endothelial blood-brain barrier function: Implication for hepatic encephalopathy.

Cerebral edema is a life-threatening neurological condition characterized by brain swelling due to the accumulation of excess fluid both intracellularly and extracellularly. Fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) develops cerebral edema by disrupting blood-brain barrier (BBB). However, the mechanisms by which mediator induces brain edema in FHF remain to be elucidated. Here, we assessed a linkage between brain edema and lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) signaling by utilizing an animal model of FHF and in vitro BBB model. Azoxymethane-treated mice developed FHF and hepatic encephalopathy, associated with h

Interleukin-2 as a therapeutic agent.

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) belongs to a class of soluble, regulatory proteins known as cytokines. It is a 133 amino acid glycoprotein secreted by … immunosuppressants. The main adverse effect of IL-2 is capillary leak syndrome caused by increased capillary permeability and extravasation of fluid. In days to come, IL-2 is likely to play an increasingly important role in management of viral infections, malignancies and a number of other diseases conditions.

Pathogenesis of puumala and other hantavirus infections.

Hantaviruses are rodent/insectivore-borne negative-stranded RNA viruses which belong to the Bunyaviridae family. They do not cause any symptomatic disease in their adult carrier rodents, but in humans they are aetiologic agents of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), both associated with a significant mortality. In cell culture hantaviruses do not cause cytopathic effects and the mechanisms of disease in man are not well understood. Increased capillary permeability is a central phenomenon in the pathogenesis of hantavirus infections. Although t…

Stereoscopic study on capillary density of early brain oedema in a dog postburn model.

BACKGROUND: After severe burn, the effective circulating blood volume decreases drastically due to massive body fluid loss, and blood redistribution occurs to maintain sufficient blood supply to vital organs. Blood perfusion of brain tissue changes and the permeability of the blood brain barrier increases due to ischaemia and hypoxia, which results in brain oedema. The goal of this study was to explore the changes of cerebral blood flow during the brain oedema at the early stage of severe burn. METHODS: Twenty-six dogs were randomly divided into control and 6, 12, 18, and 24 PBH groups. The m

Pentoxifylline as adjunctive therapy in leg ulcer management.

Refractory or recurring leg ulcers typically signify the presence of impaired venous or arterial microcirculation (or both). A current hypothesis suggests that local oxygen and nutrient deficits occur because capillary lumens narrow and become permeable to fibrinogen and proteins by activated white blood cells and inadequate fibrinolysis. As a result, the deposition of a relatively impermeable perivascular fibrin sheath occurs, preventing adequate delivery of oxygen and nutrients. Therapy should therefore aim at reversing these deficits and improving wound healing. Pentoxifylline (Trental), us

Hydrocarbon migration and accumulation simulation: A review and a novel multi-scale quantitative numerical simulation method.

The simulation of hydrocarbon migration and accumulation is critical for understanding petroleum systems, yet existing methods face significant limitations, particularly in unconventional reservoirs. Traditional physical experiments are constrained by scale, complexity, and difficulty in reproducing real subsurface conditions, while conventional numerical simulation models struggle to capture the multi-scale dynamics of fluid flow in low-permeability formations. Many current approaches fail to incorporate key microscopic mechanisms, such as capillary effects, wettability alterations, and multi
