In rheumatoid arthritis peripheral cartilaginous joints are inflamed and eroded. One driving factor may be an immune response towards proteins in the cartilage. Here it is shown that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP), expressed specifically in cartilage, is arthritogenic in the rat. Both native and denatured rat COMP induced severe arthritis in selected rat strains. OBJECTIVES: Patellar subluxation was experimentally induced in young rabbits and the resulting cartilaginous changes were observed over a prolonged period of time to determine histological changes in the subluxated patellar cartilage.

This paper reports a study of microscopic infiltration of the cartilage of the cricoid carried out in 335 patients with T2-T3 carcinomas of the larynx who had undergone total laryngectomy. The purpose of this work was to determine whether microcracks occur in calcified cartilage in vivo, and to use histological techniques to separate these from artifacts caused by processing. Six femoral heads without disease were split in the frontal plane. Sections from one slab were cut to 150 microns and stained with basic fuchsin. This paper studies the influence of an antimitotic factor (puromycin) and a hormonal factor (thyroid hormone, TH) on canal growth. The tibiae of 15 six-day-old rats were cultured in a serum-free chemically defined medium. The cultures were carried out for as long as 6 days. A simple surgical technique for correcting posttraumatic enophthalmos is described. The steps are as follows: (1) a plaster mold is obtained of the patient's face, (2) wax is added to the enophthalmic eye of the plaster mold until it becomes symmetrical, (3) the quantity of wax is measured, and (4) the same amount of sliced costal cartilage is implanted beneath the periosteum of the extended orbital wall behind the vertical axis of the globe. Similarities in morphology between copper-deficient cartilage and abnormal cartilage associated with tibial dyschondroplasis (TD) led to studies dealing with copper metabolism and its possible relation to TD.
