INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic procedures performed during cardiopulmonary resuscitation on patients in cardiac arrest or unconsciousness from any other cause can have serious adverse effects. Scale of injuries scale is very wide - from simple skin lacerations up to serious injuries which can even thwart possibility of successful resuscitation and cause death.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Comprehensive review of current literature aimed at injuries associated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
RESULTS: Authors of this paper offer up-to-date review of possible cardiopulmonary resuscitation associated i

Traumatic retropharyngeal pseudomeningoceles occur rarely, are associated with severe trauma, and have been reported in patients with significant neurologic deficits at presentation. We report the rare occurrence of a pseudomeningocele following a high-speed motor vehicle accident. Neurological examination showed the patient to be briskly following commands, with intact cranial nerve, motor, and sensory function. CT/MR imaging showed subarachnoid hemorrhage involving the interpeduncular cistern, a clivus fracture, a right occipital condyle fracture, an atlanto-occipital subluxation, aortic arc

Breathing variability and apnea characteristic of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was investigated in a newborn infant with complete interruption of intercostal to phrenic neural pathways due to intrapartem transection of the cervical spinal cord. Breath-to-breath variability in inspiratory duration (TI), breath duration (Ttot), tidal volume (VT), and ventilation (VI) was significantly greater in REM than in quiet sleep and was similar to the variability in these parameters seen in normal infants. In addition, brief periods of diaphragmeatic apnea were observed during REM sleep. The phenomenon

OBJECT: Although rarely encountered, pediatric patients with severe cervical spine deformities and instability may occasionally require occipitocervicothoracic instrumentation and fusion. This case series reports the experience of 4 pediatric centers in managing this condition. Occipitocervical fixation is the treatment of choice for craniocervical instability that is symptomatic or threatens neurological function. In children, the most common distal fixation level with modern techniques is C-2. Treated patients maintain a significant amount of neck motion due to the flexibility of the subaxia

A 4-month-old female four-toed hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) presented with lethargy, anorexia, dyspnoea and weight loss. Following death, post-mortem computed tomography (CT) and an autopsy were performed. CT revealed that the external surfaces of bones, including the cranial bones and vertebrae, were rough and osteolytic lesions were present multifocally in the ribs and some appendicular bones. On gross examination, both kidneys were severely enlarged and, on cut sections, a few cysts (up to 1 mm diameter) were present in the medulla. The cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae were diffus

Brown tumors represent the terminal stage of bone remodeling processes in primary hyperparathyroidism. Currently they are rare, and typically affect long bones, pelvis and ribs. Brown tumors may be not included in the initial differential diagnosis of bone disease, especially when they are present in atypical localizations. We reported two cases of oral brown tumors as the initial presentation of primary hyperparathyroidism. In the first case, a 44-year-old woman presented a painful and sessile lesion of 4 × 3 cm over the central body of the mandible which progressively increased in 4-month. T

This study describes a case of polytrauma of the axial skeleton accompanied by a spinal anatomical variation of an early medieval old female skeleton (dated to the 8th-9th century AD), with the purpose of clarifying the origin of the condition and to understand its impact on the life quality of the individual. The skeleton was subjected to macroscopic and X-ray examination. An anthropological analysis discovered the skeleton is well preserved, gracile, and with significant traces of physical activity. A detailed survey of the spine revealed there are six cervical, 12 thoracic, and six lumbar v

We present the case of a 53 years old woman diagnosed with splenic marginal zone lymphomas with plasmacytic differentiation (after a lymph node biopsy), who, complained of mild asthenia, weight loss (about 10 kg in 9 months), spatial disorientation during the last period. The clinical examination revealed slight pallor, normal cardiovascular and respiratory examination; painful cervical, about 5cm in diameter and also non-painful inguinal lymphadenopathies, increased consistency, freely movable, about 2 cm in diameter. The patient presented enlarged liver (lower limit at 3 cm below the ribs) a

Fenproporex treatment also increased the number of fetuses presenting small kidneys and cervical ribs. The present results indicate that fenproporex, in the dose and exposure periods tested, appears to exhibit a low maternal toxicity and teratogenic potential in mice.

BACKGROUND: The detailed morphology and topography of the sympathetic cardiac nerves (SCNs) and ganglia with their surrounding structures in Syrian hamsters were examined to document the general topography and morphology and variations and to discuss the comparative anatomy between the SCNs and ganglia in Syrian hamsters and other rodents, as well as their comparative morphology and macroscopic evolutionary changes among rodents, rabbits, domestic animals (cats, dogs, sheep, goats, oxen, pigs and horses), primates, and humans.
METHODS: The composition of the cervical and thoracic parts of the

Spinal interbody fusion cages must be able to bear heavy loads while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding bone. However, the cages currently used in spinal surgery often fall short on both fronts. To meet the multi-faceted requirements, here, we introduce, for the first time, additively manufactured, biodegradable Zn-Mg interbody fusion cages with multi-scale structural control, combining eutectic microstructure, heterogeneous grain architecture, and gyroid lattices reinforced by interpenetrating ribs. The resulting cages showed a compressive strength comparable to that of cortical bone

BACKGROUND: Patients with parastomal recurrence have poor prognosis and pose a great challenge to the surgeons. Surgical resection is the only curable choice. Treating this patient group with a patent tracheostoma and a stable airway is the main objective. CASE PRESENTATION: We present an extremely rare case of a parastomal relapse after laryngectomy and radiochemotherapy for laryngeal carcinoma. Partial resection of the manubrium, medial part of the right clavicle, medial parts of the 1st and 2nd ribs, proximal part of the trachea below the cervical tracheostomy and subtotal thyroidectomy we

Peirosauridae (Crocodyliformes, Notosuchia) is one of the fossil lineages of crocodyliforms ubiquitous in the Cretaceous deposits of the Bauru Basin. Here, we describe a new species of a longirostrine Peirosauridae from the Adamantina Formation (Bauru Basin, Late Cretaceous). The specimen consists of a partially preserved skull with a cranial roof, interorbital region, and fragments of the posterior portion of the rostrum, including the prefrontal and lacrimal; left hemimandible, with 14 alveoli and 12 teeth; and a single cervical rib fragment. The specimen is associated with Peirosauridae by …

Gorham-Stout disease is a rare disorder, which may result in a poor prognosis. This disease, a rare lymphangiomatosis, is defined by progressive bone disappearance due to massive unicentric and multicentric osteolysis. Osteolytic lesions of the spine and pleura effusion are poor prognostic factors. Herein, we will present a case where the onset of disease occurred at the age of 18 with asthenia, myalgia, and major bone pain, followed by incomplete motor deficiency in the lower limbs and, later, in the upper limbs. Imaging studies (CT scan and MRI) of the patient revealed osteolytic lesions (ce
