A 62 year-old male with prostate cancer, recently complaining lumbar pain with elevated PSA level (6.83 ng/ml) was referred for evaluating bone metastases. Bone scintigraphy with (99m)Tc-MDP demonstrated intense uptake on third lumbar vertebra. Postoperative biopsy of the lesion on third lumbar vertebra revealed adenocarcinoma metastasis. For evaluating distant metastases and restaging, (18)F-FDG PET-CT was performed postoperatively. On PET-CT imaging there were cervical and left parailiac lymph nodes with FDG uptake, destruction on third lumbar vertebra level and intense soft tissue mass FDG

Accurate vertebrae segmentation is crucial for modern surgical technologies, and deep learning networks provide valuable tools for this task. This study explores the application of advanced deep learning-based methods for segmenting vertebrae in computed tomography (CT) images of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients. In this study, we collected a dataset of 31 samples from AIS patients, covering a wide range of spinal regions from cervical to lumbar vertebrae. High-resolution CT images were obtained for each sample, forming the basis of our segmentation analysis. We utilized 2 popula

Surgical access to T-1 and T-2 vertebral bodies through standard cervical approaches may be difficult and extensive in patients with short necks or high sterna. Adequate exposure of this area can be achieved in children, using a partial manubrial sternotomy and retraction of the manubrial halves. This procedure was successfully performed in a 14-year-old girl whose T-1 vertebra had been completely replaced by a large aneurysmal bone cyst that had produced major paraparesis. A two-stage anteroposterior excision and spinal fusion resulted in complete restoration of neurologic function, eradicati

A lordotic curve of the cervical spine in the aged is a physiological curvature of the cervical spine. The swallowing disorder precipitated by lordosis of the cervical spine in the aged, the swallowing function and intervention were reported on. An 86-year-old woman complained of swallowing difficulty for a few months. A lordotic curve (physiological curvature) of the cervical spine was observed. In the neutral neck position, the cervical lordotic angle was 29° using the Cobb C2-C7 method. When the lordotic curve of the cervical spine was intentionally straightened, the lordotic angle became 0

We report a 20-year-old male patient who was admitted to our emergency clinic after a traffic accident and who suffered from neck pain. Radiographic examination of the cervical spine showed hypertrophy of the left lamina and hypertrophy and elongation of the left spinous process of the sixth cervical vertebra (C6). A computed tomography scan revealed the associated schisis of the spinous process at the same level. Magnetic resonance imaging scan demonstrated no abnormality of the neural elements. The patient underwent a surgical operation due to persistent neck pain and the local aesthetic abn

Fourteen patients with cervical spine injuries, 12 with resultant neurological deficits, were scanned with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging within 7 days following injury. Useful information concerning the status of the spinal canal and disks was obtained in most cases. In addition, MR was able to suggest the nature of the pathological changes within the spinal cord, as well as hemorrhage and edema in the extraspinal soft tissues. These observations indicate that following acute cervical spine trauma, MR is a valuable technique in assessing injury to the spinal cord, surrounding soft tissues, v

OBJECTIVE: The anterior only surgical procedure including discectomy, open reduction and fusion is used as a recommended approach in the treatment of unilateral cervical facet dislocations, but is difficult to achieve satisfactory anterior open reduction by vertebra distractor to spread the facet joints, especially for delayed management of unilateral cervical facet dislocation (7-21days). The goal of this study was to report an anterior pedicle spreader technique to distract directly the facet joint for anterior reduction and the results of 4 patients with successful application and describe

A robust definition of normal vertebral morphometry is required to confidently identify abnormalities such as fractures. The Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES-II) collected a nationwide probability sample to document the health status of the United States. Over 10,000 lateral cervical spine and 7,000 lateral lumbar spine X-rays were collected. Demographic, anthropometric, health, and medical history data were also collected. The coordinates of the vertebral body corners were obtained for each lumbar and cervical vertebra using previously validated, automated techn

BACKGROUND: Lumbosacral agenesis is a rare congenital anomaly. There is no consensus regarding the optimal orthopaedic management of the spinal anomaly and the concomitant lower-extremity deformities. We propose a method to predict ambulatory potential and to identify patients who will benefit from early operative treatment of the lower-extremity deformities to facilitate walking.
METHODS: We reviewed the records and radiographs of eighteen patients with total or partial absence of the lumbar spine and total absence of the sacrum. Thirteen patients (Group I) had lumbosacral agenesis alone, an

The horizontal part of the third segment (V3) of the vertebral artery (VA) is a critical anastomotic site for bypass procedures involving either donor or recipient vessels. It is rare for the V3 segment to deviate from its typical course of passing through the atlanto-transverse foramen. V3 anomaly encountered in occipital artery (OA)-V3 bypass surgery has not been previously reported. Here, we present a case involving a patient undergoing bypass surgery due to recurrent post-stent occlusion at the first segment (V1) of the left VA. During the operation, it was noted that the V3 horizontal seg

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a noninflammatory progressive disease resulting in ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament of the spine and tendons. Herein, we describe a case of DISH in a patient on long-term hemodialysis. The patient was a 79-year-old man undergoing hemodialysis for chronic kidney disease due to diabetic nephropathy. He presented to the emergency department complaining of back pain after a slip and fall. Radiographs revealed bamboo spine-like findings, extending from the cervical to the lumbar spine. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance im

First time described in 1912, from Maurice Klippel and Andre Feil independently, Klippel-Feil syndrome (synonyms: cervical vertebra fusion syndrome, Klippel-Feil deformity, Klippel-Feil sequence disorder) is a bone disorder characterized by the abnormal joining (fusion) of two or more spinal bones in the neck (cervical vertebrae), which is present from birth. Three major features result from this abnormality: a short neck, a limited range of motion in the neck, and a low hairline at the back of the head. Most affected people have one or two of these characteristic features. Less than half of a…

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Cervical spine tuberculosis (TB) is uncommon, accounting for 3% to 5% of spinal TB. Although the development of anti-TB chemotherapy decreases the mortality rate significantly, it may not be applicable for all situations, especially for those with risk of instability, progression of neurologic deficit, and failure of medical treatment.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of anterior instrumentation after debridement and bone grafting in patients with lower cervical TB over a 5-year period at a single institution.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study examining the results of

A 2-year-old Thoroughbred gelding with clinical signs localized to the first 6 spinal cord segments (C1 to C6) had complete fusion of the atlanto-occipital bones which precluded performing a routine myelogram. An ultrasound-assisted myelogram at the intervertebral space between the atlas and axis was successfully done and identified a marked extradural compressive myelopathy at the level of the atlas and axis, and axis and third cervical vertebrae.

Nurses working with orthopaedic clients and pediatric populations may be the first to recognize the classic triad of Klippel-Feil syndrome: short neck, limitation of neck motion, and low occipital hairline. Klippel-Feil syndrome is a congenital malformation of the cervical vertebrae, with limited treatment options. Client/family education is vital to monitor and maintain function and to prevent neurologic deficits resulting from the fusions, accidents, or trauma.

Only 28 of 51 patients with the Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster (MRK) syndrome had the typical findings of vaginal aplasia and bipartite solid uterine buds. Among the other 23 patients 15 had additional malformations of the kidneys and urinary tract. Eight patients had more or less marked skeletal malformations, especially of the cervical vertebrae. The term "MRK syndrome" should no longer be used for such cases with extragenital malformations.

Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SEDC) is an inherited disorder of bone growth that results in short-trunk dwarfism, skeletal abnormalities, disorders in vision and hearing, atlanto-axial instability, and cleft palate. This important anomaly of the cervical vertebrae carries the risk of tetraplegia during cleft palate operations. In this case report, we discuss a case of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, the perioperative and postoperative measures, and the risk of tetraplegia.

A female eight year, one month old patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome has been introduced. General appearance of the patient was characterized by short neck with limited head movements, craniofacial asymmetry, low posterior hairline and a short stature. Cephalometric analysis revealed a Class I dentoskeletal pattern with an excessive mandibular plane angle and fused cervical vertebrae. Panoramic radiogram showed congenitally missing lower second premolars and right central incisor.
