Eighty-two chickens purchased at 11 retailers (supplied by 12 wholesalers) in the south of England were cultured for Campylobacter jejuni by a method involving total immersion. The organism was isolated from 22 (48%) of 46 fresh birds, 12 of 12 uneviscerated (New York dressed) birds, but only 1 of 24 frozen birds. Viable counts of up to 1.5 x 10(6)/chicken were obtained from fresh birds and 2.4 x 10(7)/chicken from uneviscerated birds. In Obese strain (OS) chickens the role of maternal antibodies, passively transferred through the egg to the developing chick, was evaluated as a causative factor in the early development of spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis (SAT). By recording the lower beak movement, open-mouth breathing was monitored in adult hens restrained in a supine position with the cannulated trachea under rebreathing conditions, bilateral cervical vagotomy or heat load. Lymphoid leukosis (LL), a neoplasm of the bursa-dependent lymphoid cells of the chicken, was induced by Rous-associated virus-1 in susceptible chickens. Cyclophosphamide (CY), which destroyed the lymphoid elements of the bursa of Fabricius and abrogated humoral immunity, prevented LL. Concomitantly, osteopetorosis and other neoplasms increased. Transfer of bursa cells from chickens into CY-treated hatchmates restored immune competence. Fewer than 25% of 12-hour-old chicks died after subcutaneous inoculation of 5 strains or intracranial inoculation of 3 strains of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus. Mortality of embryonating chicken eggs inoculated by the allantoic route decreased from approximately 75% to 35% between 9 and 18 days of incubation, although all 18-day-old embryos died after intraembryonic inoculation. Thus, neither newly hatched chicks nor chicken embryos (unless inoculated intraembryonically) would be of value in safety testing inactivated Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis viral vaccines.
