Research priorities to reduce the global burden of dementia by 2025.

At the First WHO Ministerial Conference on Global Action Against Dementia in March, 2015, 160 delegates, including representatives from 80 WHO Member States and four UN agencies, agreed on a call for action to reduce the global burden of dementia by fostering a collective effort to advance research. To drive this effort, we completed a globally representative research prioritisation exercise using an adapted version of the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative method. We elicited 863 research questions from 201 participants and consolidated these questions into 59 thematic research av

Adolescent response to having an HIV-infected mother.

In this study, late adolescents/early adults whose mothers were living with HIV (MLH) were interviewed in order to explore their perceptions of what it had been like for them to grow up under the shadow of their mothers' illness. Adolescents were asked to describe what the difficult aspects of growing up with an HIV-positive mother were as well as what, if any, were the more rewarding aspects. Interviews were conducted in 2009-2010 with a random sample of 40 adolescents being followed up in a longitudinal assessment study. All study participants were English or Spanish speaking. Mean age was 1

Parental Attitude Toward the Engagement in Physical Activity of Their Children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in Hungary.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Physical activity plays an essential role in a healthy lifestyle. For children, the development of an encouraging attitude toward exercise can define a positive life-long behaviour. Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a metabolic disorder that usually develops in early childhood and severely affects glucose metabolism. Associated hypo- and hyperglycaemic conditions can dramatically interfere with the patient's everyday life. Since exercise significantly alters the glucose consumption of the body, this might influence how T1DM patients view physical activity. As parental g

An investigation of the utility of the Australian Guide to the Diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder in young children.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) assists in implementing critical early support. The challenge lies in having a diagnostic process that enables valid and reliable assessment of domains of functioning in young children, with the added complexity that many children will also have co-occurring exposure to childhood adversity that is likely to impact these domains. METHODS: The aim of this study was to test a diagnostic assessment of FASD in young children using the Australian Guide to the Diagnosis of FASD. Ninety-four children (aged 3 to 7 year

Behavioral and emotional symptoms of post-institutionalized children in middle childhood.

BACKGROUND: Experience in institutional/orphanage care has been linked to increased mental health problems. Research suggests that children adopted from institutions experience specific difficulties related to inattention/overactivity. Evidence of internalizing and conduct problems relative to non-adopted peers has been found in early childhood and early adolescence, but problems may not differ from other adopted children. This study clarifies the understanding of behavioral and emotional symptoms of post-institutionalized (PI) children during middle childhood. METHODS: Eight- to eleven-year-

Validation of ICD-11 PTSD and complex PTSD in foster children using the International Trauma Questionnaire.

OBJECTIVE: ICD-11 introduces post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (CPTSD) as two distinct trauma-related disorders. Using the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) as disorder-specific measure, this study is the first to examine the factorial and construct validity of ICD-11 PTSD, CPTSD and the ITQs' applicability in children. METHODS: Two hundred and eight Austrian foster children completed a set of standardized measures. Excluding participants who reported not having experienced any kind of trauma, a final sample of 136 children completed the ITQ. Factorial and construc

A Digital Registry and Education Network for Child Maltreatment Protection: Protocol for a Pilot Observational Exploratory Intervention Study.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment, a major public health concern, has long-term neurobiological, psychological, and social consequences. Recognizing, documenting, and reporting suspected cases should be systematic across hospital and community services, but these processes are hindered by inconsistent surveillance systems, uneven professional training, and the lack of standardized data collection tools. Timely follow-up, updated clinical criteria, and structured multidisciplinary training can improve case assessment, traceability, and professionals' ability to report suspected maltreatment. The S

A qualitative exploration of children's understanding of indiscriminate friendliness.

Eight young people (aged 9-14) were interviewed about indiscriminately friendly behaviour. The majority of the sample had a history of maltreatment and placements within foster and care settings. These young people were described as indiscriminately friendly by clinicians, guardians and via the Relationships Problems Questionnaire. Interview transcripts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, a qualitative methodology. Emergent themes were drawn from interview data which highlighted the young people's experiences of rejection and feelings of insecurity within their social
