Editorial: Global Widening of the Inequitable Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Chasm During COVID-19.

The long-standing and inequitable chasm between clinical need and child and adolescent mental health care has likely widened during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for children and adolescents in developing low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Internationally, the risk for suicidal behaviors among young people rose, while timely access to care worsened.1 People in LMICs are envisioned to be precariously positioned within a perfect storm characterized by greater exposure to life-threatening COVID-19-related social determinants of health that also pose higher risk of new and recurrent men

Online Communities for Child-Attracted Persons as Informal Mental Health Care: Exploring Self-Reported Wellbeing Outcomes.

Online support communities are gaining attention among child-attracted persons (CAPs). Though research has largely focused on the negative consequences these environments create for potential offending, they may also provide a beneficial alternative to more formal treatment settings. To assess the utility for clinical and therapeutic purposes, this analysis focused on subcultural dynamics to examine self-reported wellbeing outcomes of participation in a Dutch forum for CAPs. A total of 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted with moderators, members and mental health professionals involve

Associated factors of first-birth interval among women in reproductive age, addressing maternal and child health.

BACKGROUND: The first-birth interval directly influences family size and maternal and child mortality. The objective of this study is to investigate factors associated with the time of the first-birth after the first marriage among women in Iran. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the first birth history of 1350 women aged 15-49 years was collected in Kerman (southern Iran) in 2018. To assess the predictor variables of the first-birth interval and calculate the adjusted hazard ratios, multivariate Cox regression was used. The P-value < 0.05 was considered as significant. The statistical

Maternal adverse childhood experiences, attachment style, and mental health: Pathways of transmission to child behavior problems.

BACKGROUND: Investigations have found mothers' adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) confer an intergenerational risk to their children's outcomes. However, mechanisms underlying this transmission have only been partially explained by maternal mental health. Adult attachment insecurity has been shown to mediate the association of ACEs and mental health outcomes, yet an extension of this research to children's behavioral problems has not been examined. OBJECTIVE: To examine the cascade from maternal ACEs to risk for child behavioral problems at five years of age, via mothers' attachment insecur

How Caregivers Make Meaning of Child Mental Health Problems: Toward Understanding Caregiver Strain and Help Seeking.

Family caregivers' conceptualizations of their child's emotional and behavioral problems (EBP) influence help-seeking for the child and caregiver strain. We analyzed 21 interviews with caregivers to explore their conceptualizations about the cause of their child's EBP, their experiences of strain, and their reported help-seeking behaviors. Caregivers had divergent conceptualizations of their child's EBP: 12 caregivers viewed the EBP as caused by a disorder and described the onset of symptoms as the central stressful event, whereas 9 caregivers described their child's problems as a response to

Adult female victims of child sexual abuse: multitype maltreatment and disclosure characteristics related to subjective health.

This study examined the impact of child sexual abuse and disclosure characteristics on adult psychological and psychosomatic symptoms. Data on abuse characteristics, disclosure-related events, and subjective health were collected through semistructured interviews and questionnaires from 123 adult women reporting having been sexually abused in childhood by someone close. The results indicate that disclosure-related events have a stronger relation than abuse characteristics to long-term consequences of childhood sexual abuse. In particular, a positive reaction from a partner was related to fewer

Mothers' perceptions and decision-making regarding tandem breastfeeding in Türkiye: a child health-focused qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Tandem breastfeeding, defined as breastfeeding two non-twin children during the same period, remains an underexplored practice in maternal and child health. Although it may be perceived as a way of maintaining breastfeeding continuity and emotional closeness with the older child, mothers may also encounter physical, emotional, practical, social and professional challenges. This study aimed to explore mothers' perceptions of tandem breastfeeding in Türkiye and to examine how these perceptions are shaped by emotional, socio-cultural, practical and healthcare-related factors. METHODS…

Untangling relationships between cognitive development and child and adolescent mental health: Findings from the ABCD Study.

Adolescence marks a period of profound neurocognitive maturation, during which cognitive, neural, and biological systems dynamically interact with emerging mental health symptoms. The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study provides a unique opportunity to examine these relationships across late childhood and adolescence using large-scale, longitudinal, multimodal data. This review synthesizes research using the ABCD dataset to investigate links between cognitive processes and mental health across five longitudinal assessment waves (ages 9-14), covering externalizing and internaliz

Cross-national comparison of the association between adult child educational attainment and older parents' functional health.

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence points to the protective role of adult child education in older parents' health, including their risk of ADL and IADL difficulties. Yet, little is known whether this association varies cross-nationally due to contextual differences in intergenerational transfers, family dynamics, and other factors. This study examines the relationship between adult child education and parents' functional health outcomes across countries, using comparable population-based datasets. METHODS: We used harmonized data from seven population-based studies accessed through the Gateway to

Transdiagnostic child mental health trajectories in Japan: protocol for a nationwide web‑based open cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preventive psychiatry requires longitudinal, transdiagnostic data from before adolescence, yet such data are scarce. We propose a nationwide, digital, open cohort in Japan to track mental health trajectories from birth to late adolescence using multi-informant assessments (caregivers and adolescents) within a transdiagnostic, biopsychosocial framework. Diagnosis-open recruitment will combine community-facing dissemination with clinically linked neurodevelopmental enrichment (e.g. autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), addressing underrepresentation

Integrating maternal, newborn, child health and non-communicable disease care in the sustainable development goal era.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and maternal newborn and child health (MNCH) are two deeply intertwined health areas that have been artificially separated by global health policies, resource allocations and programming. Optimal MNCH care can provide a unique opportunity to screen for, prevent and manage early signs of NCDs developing in both the woman and the neonate. This paper considers how NCDs, NCD modifiable risk factors, and NCD metabolic risk factors impact MNCH. We argue that integrated management is essential, but this faces challenges that manifest across all levels of domestic healt…

Relationship between child sleep problems in autism spectrum disorder and parent mental health and well-being.

Sleep problems are a common comorbidity in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The aim of this study is to determine how sleep problems affect not only the child with ASD, but parents also. Parents of 409 children and adolescents with ASD completed the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Parenting Stress Index-Short Form, World Health Organization Quality of Life Abbreviated Version (WHOQOL-BREF), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support.
