Oral motor patterns during feeding in severely physically disabled children.

Oral motor patterns during feeding were investigated in 58 patients with severe physical disability. Five patients showed a pattern resembling sucking. Twenty-nine exhibited an up-and-down movement of the jaw and protrusion of the tongue. Among these, the mouth opened when the food entered and the lips closed before swallowing in 20 patients; the mouth was constantly open in nine. Eight had an up-and-down movement of the jaw without protrusion of the tongue. These patterns were frequently seen in patients with spastic tetraplegia caused by neonatal asphyxia and compensated for oral motor impai

Differences between normal and developmentally disabled children in a first dental visit.

Twenty-eight three- and four-year-old normal children participated in a study where they were exposed to a tape-slide series before a first dental examination. The audiovisual product gives an explanation about a first examination, the children having no previous dental experience. The purposes of the study were to evaluate the behavior modification that took place and to see whether differences could be found with the results of the same study performed four years before, with developmentally disabled children. The results obtained with normal children were the opposite of those obtained with

A comparison of temporal integration in children with a specific reading disability and normal readers.

Previous research has suggested that whereas some techniques show that subjects with a specific reading disability (SRD) have greater visible persistence than controls, a temporal integration of form technique does not. It has been suggested that the failure of the temporal integration task to show a difference results from the spatial separation between stimuli used in the technique. In this study SRD and control subjects were compared on a new version of a temporal integration task, under two conditions varying the spatial separation of elements in the display. It was predicted that there wo

Perceived role restriction and adjustment of mothers of children with chronic physical disability.

Examined the relationship between maternal perceived role restriction, the extent to which a mother feels unable to pursue her own interests due to responsibilities with raising a child with a chronic physical condition, and psychosocial adjustment in 50 mothers with children 6-11 years old who had a chronic physical disability. Perceived role restriction accounted for a significant increment in the variation in adjustment beyond that contributed by objective indices of the child's disability. Neither these objective parameters of the child's disability nor his or her level of problem behavior

The orthographic code: Developmental trends in reading-disabled and normally-achieving children.

An auditory rhyme detection task was employed to examine orthographic code development in 27 reading-disabled (RD) and 27 normally-achieving (NA) children ranging in age from 7-0 to 11-5. The amount of orthographic facilitation (that is, the reduction in response latencies for orthographically similar as opposed to orthographically dissimilar rhyme pairs) was recorded for each subject. Results indicated that RD children exhibit significantly less facilitation overall than NA children and that RD children do not demonstrate comparable orthographic facilitation effects to NA children until they

Specific reading disability in Egyptian children. Clinical picture, diagnosis and prognosis.

Forty-four elementary school children with average or above average intelligence were found to be 1-2 years behind the expected level of reading ability. They were left to proceed in their conventional education program for the next 3 years. Reassessment revealed that 23 children (52%) had attained a normal reading level. 21 (48%) children remained unchanged. They were categorized into the corrective reading disability (CRD) and specific reading disability (SRD) groups, respectively. Clinical evaluation of both groups showed that children with SRD had a significantly higher incidence of: (1) i

The development of working memory in normally achieving and subtypes of learning disabled children.

Working memory has been proposed as an important component of reading and arithmetic skills. The development of working memory was studied in normally achieving and subtypes of learning disabled children. The performance of reading disabled (RD), arithmetic disabled (ARITHD), and attentional deficit disordered (ADD) children, age 7-13, was compared to normal achievers (NA) on 2 working memory tasks, 1 involving sentences and the other involving counting. There was a significant growth of working memory as a function of age. In addition, the RD children had significantly lower scores on both ta

Speech perception and the discrimination of brief auditory cues in reading disabled children.

The processing of speech and nonspeech sounds by 23 reading disabled children and their age- and sex-matched controls was examined in a task requiring them to identify and report the order of pairs of stimuli. Reading disabled children were impaired in making judgments with very brief tones and with stop consonant syllables at short interstimulus intervals (ISI's). They had no unusual difficulty with vowel stimuli, vowel stimuli in a white noise background, or very brief visual figures. Poor performance on the tones and stop consonants appears to be due to specific difficulty in processing ver

Ocular pursuit in mentally retarded, cerebral-palsied, and learning-disabled children.

We tested the following groups for visual pursuit abilities: 54 mentally retarded, 46 cerebral-palsied, and 131 learning-disabled children, 3 to 10 years of age. The resulting five behavioral scores, six directions, and total scores were analyzed for age trends. Comparisons were made between the handicapped groups and between the handicapped and normative samples. The scores were also correlated with other visual and postural abilities. All three handicapped groups scored lower than the normative group and also showed patterns different from the normative group and different from each other. T

Central auditory processing in urban black children, normal and learning disabled.

Normative data from Windham et al (1985) for urban Black children aged 7-10 yrs on the SSW test and the Willeford central auditory processing battery were used to compare those norms with scores of 40 children of similar age and from the same population who were referred from the Howard University Child Development Center as being at risk for learning disability (LD). The L-competing, L-non-competing, and Total Error Score indexes from the SSW test, and the L-ear score from Willeford's Competing Sentences subtest, differentiated the LD Ss as a group from normals (p less than .05). Other tests

The impact of phonemic processing instruction on the reading achievement of reading-disabled children.

It is hypothesized that a phonemic processing deficit is a primary causal factor in the reading problems of many children with developmental dyslexia. An instructional model which emphasizes phonics instruction as a key in the treatment of children with reading disorders is presented. Procedures for the application of this model in a parent-involvement clinic program are described. Results from two typical children from the clinic sample who had received treatment for more than a year are presented. One Fourth-Grade child, who began the program with a 1 1/2-year reading deficit, was reading gr

Comprehension of nonverbal communication: a reexamination of the social competencies of learning-disabled children.

This study was designed to determine whether learning-disabled (LD) children differed from nondisabled (NLD) children in their ability to comprehend nonverbal communication when potential attentional differences between the groups were controlled. In addition, the relationship between nonverbal comprehension and social competence was assessed. Thirty LD and 30 NLD boys between 9 and 12 years of age were administered a short form of the Profile of Nonverbal Sensitivity (PONS) to assess nonverbal comprehension; social competence measures included teachers' ratings of aggressive and withdrawn beh

The Relationship between Dynamic Balance and Postrotary Nystagmus in Learning Disabled Children.

Twenty-four children with learning disabilities or perceptual-motor handicaps were evaluated using the Southern California Postrotary Nystagmus Test and other clinical measures frequently used by occupational therapists to assess vestibular function. Correlational analyses revealed significant relationships between nystagmus duration scores and Walk on Floor Eyes Closed (a test of dynamic balance), prone extension posture, Walk on Floor Eyes Open, age, muscle tone and Standing Balance: Eyes Open. Multiple regression analysis indicated that when all of the clinical variables were considered tog

Lateral asymmetry in perceptual judgments of reading disabled, hyperactive and control children.

Three groups of 11 year old boys, classified as reading-disabled/hyperactive, hyperactive, and normal controls, made same-different judgments to pairs of verbal or visuospatial stimuli presented simultaneously to the right or left side of a fixation point. Two experimental paradigms were used, one emphasizing comparison judgments from memory, the other, new comparison judgments. Reading-disabled boys made more errors of judgment than did controls. All subjects exhibited faster reaction times for different judgments of pairs appearing in the left visual field. Reaction times were longer and err

ACTH4-10: cognitive and behavioral effects in hyperactive, learning-disabled children.

A single dose of 30 mg i.m. ACTH4-10 or placebo was given to a sample of 20 hyperactive, learning-disabled children. No significant drug effects were obtained on measures of visual and auditory memory, new learning, impulsivity, attention, perceptual motor skills, anxiety, or behavior during testing. There was a slight increase in pulse rate for drug compared with the placebo group. These findings are in keepeing witth other recent reports of limited or insignificant cognitive effects in adults of a single dose of this peptide.

Treatment of Challenging Behaviour in Children and Youth With an Intellectual Disability With or Without Autism.

BACKGROUND: Children and youth with an intellectual disability and/or autism exhibit challenging behaviour at significantly higher rates than their peers. The present study explored the treatment modalities accessed to address challenging behaviour among this population as well as predictors of treatment access. METHOD: A sample of 372 caregivers completed the GO4KIDDS survey about their children aged 4 to 20 years (M = 11.37; SD = 3.81). RESULTS: Results revealed that informal behavioural/teaching strategies were the most utilised approach to address challenging behaviour, whereas formal be
