The uptake and efflux of 36Cl in the lateral ventricle choroid plexus of 1-7-week-old rats were measured to determine if Cl transport changed with age and if such transport responded to inhibitors of CSF secretion and ion transport. The steady-state (30 min) Cl uptakes were 148 +/- 9.4 nmol.mg-1 dry weight at 1 week and 139 +/- 7.0 nmol.mg-1 dry weight at 7 weeks, (P > 0.05). A full-term newborn infant with intracranial hemorrhage secondary to an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the choroid plexus is presented. Although angiography was not undertaken before surgery, a vascular nodule containing an AVM nidus was found in the hematoma wall. The authors stress that an AVM should be considered as a cause of intracranial hemorrhage and that the hematoma wall be searched thoroughly in neonates without predisposing factors.

An unruptured hemangioma (vascular malformation) of the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle in a premature stillborn baby is described. The 30 choroid plexus tumors recorded in a large pediatric tumor registry were reviewed. The 22 choroid plexus papillomas and 8 choroid plexus carcinomas represented 2.1% of all brain tumors in the registry. The intermediate filament protein types of normal choroid plexus and ependymal tissue and their putative tumors were investigated. In normal human choroid plexus tissue, but not in ependyma, keratin could be demonstrated immunohistochemically. 3 cases with benign choroid plexus papillomas (CPP) in the fourth ventricle are described. All patients were less than 2 months of age. They were among 14 cases with intracranial CPP in a series of 100 tumors of the posterior fossa. Correct diagnosis was not obtained by means of pneumoencephalography, with apparently normal repletion of the fourth ventricle being visualized. 2 of the 3 patients died after application of the ventriculoperitoneal shunt and before extirpation of the tumor. All 3 patients soon presented hydrocephalus in 1 case already 'intra utero'.

Twenty-nine Finnish patients (8-80 years old during follow-up) with hyperornithinemia and gyrate atrophy (HOGA) were followed 2 to 31 years to determine when and how rapidly visual acuities and visual functions were affected by the disease. Three cases of choroid plexus papilloma were studied by light and electron microscopy. All had the typical papillary pattern, and, in addition, two exhibited solid areas of tumor growth which predominated in one case. PAS positive (diastase resistant) and argyrophilic cytoplasmic inclusions were present in all three tumors but were particularly abundant in the predominantly solid one. Gentamicin often attains inadequate therapeutic levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In the present study, the possibility that gentamicin might be transported from CSF to blood by a mechanism in the choroid plexus was investigated. Rabbit choroid plexuses were incubated 15 to 120 minutes in artificial CSF containing 14C-gentamicin and 3H-inulin. The choroid plexuses accumulated gentamicin linearly up to 120 minutes where a tissue/medium ratio of 5.4 was attained.
