Central nervous system action of melatonin on gastric acid and pepsin secretion in pylorus-ligated rats.

We recently demonstrated that centrally administered melatonin at low doses inhibits the induction of gastric lesions by water-immersion restraint stress. To investigate the mechanism of the potent anti-ulcer action of melatonin, the central nervous system (CNS) effects of melatonin on gastric acid and pepsin secretion were studied in conscious pylorus-ligated rats. Intracisternal (i.c.) melatonin (1-100 ng) dose-dependently decreased acid and pepsin output, while a higher i.p. dose (1 microg) had no inhibitory effect. The i.c. melatonin did not change serum gastrin concentrations. Serum melat

Naltrindole, a selective delta-opioid receptor antagonist, potentiates the lethal effects of cocaine by a central mechanism of action.

The potentiation of the toxic and lethal effects of cocaine by the selective delta-opioid receptor antagonist naltrindole was explored in unrestrained, unanesthetized rats that received a continuous intravenous infusion of cocaine until death. The lethal dose of cocaine was lowered dose dependently in animals administered naltrindole intracisternally (3.0-30 microg), but not intravenously (30-300 microg). There was also a decrease in the lethal dose of cocaine following an injection of the nonselective opioid antagonist naltrexone, but not naloxone. However, the seizure-producing dose of cocai

MRI and CT of sellar and parasellar disorders.

Discussion of the anatomy of the parasellar region focuses on the optic chiasm and its relationship to surrounding structures. CT and MRI are valuable tools in the imaging of these regions. This article provides a brief review of the technique of CT and MRI with visualized anatomic structures of these areas. A closer look at how CT and MRI are used to delineate the different pathologic processes of the sellar and parasellar regions then follows.

[Radionuclide cisternography in the late period of penetrating cranio-cerebral wounds].

An analysis of the radiological signs is presented proceeding from the results of examination of the visualization of the CSF tract in 123 patients in whom radionuclide cisternography with 99mTc-DTPA was performed 1,3,6 and 24 h after administration of a radiopharmaceutical. The radiological appearance of pathology of the CSF system in a long-term period after penetrating craniocerebral wound was developed.

Epistaxis and Intradural-Extramedullary Haemorrhage in a Dog With Steroid Responsive Meningitis-Arteritis.

A 2-year-old female entire Golden Retriever with a history of being subdued was seen. Her physical and neurological examinations were initia … of an early stage hyperacute hemorrhagic process. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was collected from the cisterna magna. CSF analysis exhibited a marked mixed pleocytosis with a slight neutrophilic predominance and elevated protein content. Due to the dog going from being ambulatory to non-ambulatory paraparetic with absent postural reactions in her pelvic limbs, sur …

Investigating the Impact of Delivery Routes for Exon Skipping Therapies in the CNS of DMD Mouse Models.

Nucleic acid-based therapies have demonstrated great potential for the treatment of monogenetic diseases, including neurologic disorders. To … ative to that with PMO, even when the PMO was administered at higher doses. We also performed intra-cisterna magna (ICM) delivery as an alternative route for CSF delivery and found a biased distribution of the ASOs towards posterior brain regions, including the cerebellum, hindbrain, and the cervical part of the spinal cord. Finally, we combined both ICV and ICM …

Open pathways for cerebrospinal fluid outflow at the cribriform plate along the olfactory nerves.

BACKGROUND: Routes along the olfactory nerves crossing the cribriform plate that extend to lymphatic vessels within the nasal cavity have be … sal submucosa. A fluorescently-labelled antibody marking vascular endothelium was injected into the cisterna magna to demonstrate the functionality of the lymphatic vessels in the olfactory region. Finally, we performed immunostaining to study the distribution of the arachnoid barrier at the cribriform plate region. FINDINGS: We identified that there are open a …

BACKGROUND: The molecular mutations of the L1CAM gene and the imaging appearances of four fetuses with L1 syndrome from three independent Ch … at the third ventricle (7.5 mm wide) was raised, and the fourth ventricle was communicated with the cisterna magna. The parents requested termination of the above pregnancy. CONCLUSION: The current study emphasizes the importance of combining family history, prenatal ultrasonography, and L1CAM mutation testing positive for the diagnosis of the L1 syndrome.

Pregabalin Protects Brain Tissue from Subarachnoid Hemorrhage by Enhancing HIF-1α/eNOS Signaling and VEGF Production.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effects of different doses of pregabalin on the pathophysiologic changes in early brain injury after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in rats. METHODS: Thirty-eight Wistar albino rats were divided into 4 groups: control (n = 8), SAH (n = 10), SAH plus 30 mg/kg/day of pregabalin (n = 10), and SAH plus 60 mg/kg/day of pregabalin (n = 10). SAH was induced with 0.3 mL of autologous blood injected to the cisterna magna of rats. Pregabalin was administered intraperitoneally. Oxidative stress markers, mRNA expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase, hypoxia-inducible…

Predestinating Role of Cardiac Ganglia on Heart Life Expectancy in Rabbits After Brain Death Following Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: An Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac ganglia are rechargeable batteries of the heart. The essential role of cardiac ganglia on cardiac life expectancy has not been examined following brain death. The aim of this study was to determine cardiac ganglia numbers and neuron density following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). METHODS: Twenty-five hybrid rabbits were grouped as control (n = 5), sham (n = 5), and SAH (n = 15). The SAH groups' animals were subjected to injections of lethal dose of 2.00 cc autologous blood into their cisterna magna until linear EEG was obtained. The hearts of all animals were extracted fo…

Describing a New Mechanism of Retinal Detachment Secondary to Ophthalmic Artery Vasospasm Following Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: An Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: The pterygopalatine ganglion (PPG) and ophthalmic arteries (OpAs) have important roles in ocular autoregulation and retinal and visual functions. The relationship between PPG neuron density, OpA vasospasm, and retinal detachment in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has never been studied. METHODS: This study was conducted on 25 rabbits. Five animals were in the control group (GI; n = 5), five in the sham group (GII; n = 5), and 15 in the study group (GIII; n = 15). After injection of 1 cc serum saline into the cisterna magna in the sham group, and autologous blood in the SAH group, th…

Neuroprotective Effects of Nasopharyngeal Perfluorochemical Cooling in a Rat Model of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) frequently results in severe morbidity, even mortality. Hypothermia is known to have a neuroprotective effect in ischemic injuries. The aim of this study was to determine whether nasopharyngeal (NP) perfluorochemical (PFC) cooling could be used in a rat model of SAH model for neuroprotection. METHODS: SAH was induced in 16 male Sprague-Dawley rats by cisterna magna injection of 0.3 mL autologous blood. Vital signs, temperatures, cerebral blood flow (CBF), and brain histology were assessed. Brain cooling was performed on the treatment group using the NP…
