INTRODUCTION: Ankle sprains are common sports-related injuries, and recurrent sprains may lead to chronic ankle instability (CAI). The mechanical and geometric properties of lateral ankle ligaments are crucial for joint stability. This study investigated how variations in Young’s modulus and thickness of the lateral ankle ligaments influence ankle stability. METHODS: A finite element model of the ankle was developed, in which the thickness and Young’s modulus of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), and posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL) were individually

Herein, using UV-vis variable temperature diffuse reflectance (DR) spectroscopy, significant findings were revealed upon the examination of the absorption spectra of three one-dimensional (1D) perovskites (pyridinium lead bromide (PyPbBr3), piperidinium lead bromide (PipPbBr3), and piperidinium lead iodide (PipPbI3)) in the temperature range of 100-300 K. Results were analyzed and combined with our previously reported data on pyridinium lead iodide (PyPbI3). A distinct fine structure at the edge of the absorption/DR spectra was observed for all four compounds at cryogenic temperatures. The ana

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus (HV) is a common foot deformity affecting around 19 % of adults. Finite element analysis (FEA) is a valuable computational tool for investigating the complex biomechanics of foot deformities. This systematic review evaluates FEA studies investigating HV biomechanics, surgical correction techniques and fixation methods.
METHODS: Medline, EMBASE, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from inception to 2025. Included studies employed FEA to investigate HV biomechanics, with or without surgical intervention. An adaption of the ROBFEAD tool was used to asse

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common form of medically-intractable epilepsy. Subicular hyperexcitability is frequently observed with TLE, presumably caused by impaired inhibition of local excitatory neurons. Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of silencing subicular pyramidal neurons to treat a rodent model of TLE. First, we generated a chronic TLE mouse model via initial intrahippocampal kainic acid (IHKA) injection. In the chronic state after first IHKA injection, behavioral seizures and histological abnormalities were reliably observed. We then injected an adeno-associated viral

In recent years, the modulation of brain neural activity by applied electromagnetic fields has become a hot spot in neuroscience research. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) are two common non-invasive neuromodulation techniques. However, conventional tACS has limited stimulation effects in the deeper parts of the brain. In this study, a method of low and medium frequency envelope wave neurostimulation is proposed, and its effectiveness and safety are evaluated by simulation and human experiment. First, we built a real head mo

Bone marrow (BM) examination is a key element in the diagnosis and prognostic grading of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs), and obtaining adequate BM cell samples is critical for accurate test results. Massive haemodilution of aspirated BM samples is a well-known problem; however, its incidence in patients with MDS has not been well studied. We report the first study to examine the incidence of massive haemodilution in nationwide BM samples aspirated from patients diagnosed with or suspected of MDS in Japan. Among 283 cases available for analysis, BM smears from 92 cases (32.5%) were hypospicul

Plate fixation is a common treatment option for radial head fractures (RHFs). Due to the benefits of less invasiveness and fewer complications of internal fixation, the application of small-diameter headless compression screws (HCSs) to treat RHFs has become a new trend. This study aimed to compare the mechanical stability of four distinct internal fixation protocols for transversely unstable RHFs via finite element analysis. Using computed tomography data from 10 patients, we developed 40 patient-specific FE models of transversely unstable RHFs fixed by parallel, crossed, and tripod HCSs and

In the article there are presented the results of research on naturally conditioned insufficiency of trace elements, particularly iodine, in the Republic of Mordovia. Iodine deficiency disorders are referred to the most common non-infectious human pathology. According to WHO data, about two billion people on Earth live in conditions of in iodine deficiency. In the Russian Federation there are no areas in which the population would not be at risk for the development of iodine deficiency disorders. To these regions and the Republic of Mordovia is referred. The prevalence of diseases caused by io

BackgroundSequence specific RNA binding proteins are important regulators of gene expression. Several related crosslinking-based, high-throughput sequencing methods, including PAR-CLIP, have recently been developed to determine direct binding sites of global protein-RNA interactions. However, no studies have quantitatively addressed the contribution of background binding to datasets produced by these methods.ResultsWe measured non-specific RNA background in PAR-CLIP data, demonstrating that covalently crosslinked background binding is common, reproducible and apparently universal among laborat

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of geometric variations on the stresses developed in the leaflets of congenital bicuspid aortic valves (CBAV). We developed a model for the human tri-leaflet aortic valve based on the geometry and dimensions published in the literature. We also developed simulated CBAV geometry based on the most common geometry present in patients with CBAV that is published in the literature. We employed a constitutive relationship for the leaflet material from the previously published experimental data of fresh porcine aortic valve leaflet specimens for the analy

Operons are a common mode of gene organization in Caenorhabditis elegans. Similar gene arrangements suggest that functional operons may exist in Brugia malayi. To definitively test this hypothesis, a bicistronic reporter vector consisting of an upstream firefly luciferase gene and a downstream renilla luciferase gene was constructed. The genome was then surveyed to identify 15 gene pairs that were likely to represent operons. Two of four domains upstream of the 5' gene from these clusters exhibited promoter activity. When constructs replicating the promoter and intergenic arrangement found in

BACKGROUND: Most primary headaches are episodic, and most estimates of the heavy disability burden attributed to headache derive from epidemiological data focused on the episodic subtypes of migraine and tension-type headache (TTH). These disorders give rise directly but intermittently to symptom burden. Nevertheless, people with these disorders may not be symptom-free between attacks. We analysed the Eurolight dataset for interictal burden.
METHODS: Eurolight was a cross-sectional survey using modified cluster sampling from the adult population (18-65 years) in 10 countries of the European U

PURPOSE: The growing numbers of terminally ill and dying in prison has high economic and moral costs as global correctional systems and the society at large. However, to date little is known about the extent to which palliative and end-of-life care is infused within global prison health care systems. The purpose of this paper is to fill a gap in the literature by reviewing and critically appraising the methods and major findings of the international peer-reviewed literature on palliative and end-of-life care in prison, identify the common elements of promising palliative and end-of-life servic

BACKGROUND: Tibial fractures are among the most common complex orthopedic injuries. The mechanical strength and biomaterial properties of implants used in the treatment of such fractures directly affect the healing process. In this study, the mechanical effects of different implant designs and biomaterials on obliquely fractured tibia were analyzed. In addition, it was aimed to evaluate the data obtained from finite element analysis (FEA) with machine learning (ML) algorithms. METHODS: Seven implant models for tibial shaft fractures were analyzed using static structural simulations in Ansys Wo

INTRODUCTION: Co-production is an important practice for addressing health disparities and developing equitable services with underserved communities. Co-production aims to ensure that underserved communities are central to the design of services that reflect community needs. African and Caribbean heritage communities (ACHC) face heightened risks of HIV due to stigma, discrimination, social, economic and structural factors, leading to significant health inequities. Despite a national target to end new HIV transmissions by 2030, HIV remains prevalent. Common Ambition Bristol (CAB) is a co-produ

OBJECTIVE: We describe analytically confirmed opioid-related presentations to emergency departments (EDs) in Australia.
METHODS: Presentations with analytically confirmed opioid exposure, between January 2021 and December 2024, were identified from the Emerging Drugs Network of Australia (EDNA) Clinical Registry. Demographic data, clinical features, outcomes, naloxone dosing, and analytical toxicology results were extracted.
RESULTS: Opioids were detected in 793 ED presentations. The majority were male (568, 71.6%) with a median age of 40 years (Q1-Q3: 30-48 years). Patients were unwell (Aus

BACKGROUND: The mandibular third molar (MTM) is frequently present in mandibular angle fractures treated with the Champy technique. Clinical research on MTM management has focused predominantly on postoperative complications, and several studies have suggested that retention may confer a stabilizing effect on the fracture - the so-called "splinting effect" proposed by Wolujewicz. However, this stabilizing role has never been quantitatively verified at the biomechanical level, and the geometric feature of the retained tooth responsible for this effect has not been identified. The aim of this th
