Of 1,343 neurotic patients who completed six-week courses of treatment in a therapeutic community, 60% were considered by the therapists to have improved greatly in terms of symptoms, 36% in terms of insight and 35% in terms of attitude and behaviour. This review focuses on the pediatric nosocomial problems of the past few years, with emphasis on those found in community hospitals. The nosocomial infection problem of congenital rubella syndrome, genital herpes exposures, diarrhea, common childhood diseases and major lower respiratory infections are emphasized. Opinions about current problems are stated with the recognition that further scientific observations will lead to new recommendations.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is a common entity that routinely lends itself to prompt surgical cure. Infrequently, multiple surgical explorations are required to effect a cure. An assessment of protein-calorie status was performed on 200 consecutive adult nonobstetric admissions to a private hospital from two group family practices. Anthropometric measurements, serum albumin level, and total lymphocyte count were determined at admission and weekly if the patient remained in the hospital. A patient with a past history of sporadic parenteral drug abuse had communicating hydrocephalus associated with arachnoiditis over the lumbar spinal cord. The diagnosis of aspergillosis was made by a newly described immunofluorescent staining procedure and was later confirmed by culture.
