INTRODUCTION: Older adults are particularly vulnerable to climate-related stressors such as extreme heat, food and water insecurity and displacement, all of which can worsen existing health conditions. This is further compounded by age-related physiological changes, pre-existing health conditions and social factors like isolation and limited mobility. With a growing population of older adults in low-income and middle-income countries, their vulnerability to climate change becomes a critical global public health issue and yet is understudied and needs urgent and comprehensive action. This study

Sierra Leone has one of the world's highest maternal mortality rates. In response to this crisis, Sierra Leone has developed innovative policies and community-based practices to improve maternal health, including the implementation of the Sierra Leone Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, Child, and Adolescent Health Strategy. The Mothers of Sierra Leone project creates short documentary films that amplify the expertise of Sierra Leonean healthcare professionals and the voices of current and expectant mothers. The current study used focus groups to qualitatively explore the perceptions of mothers

Mental health services in low income countries are inadequate. Health care delivery services in these countries are mainly focused on vector-borne diseases and HIV/AIDS. To make the situation worse, trained health workers are leaving developing countries for higher paying jobs elsewhere; this "brain drain" is robbing countries of their energetic and highly trained manpower. In response to this dire situation, Ethiopia started a psychiatric nursing training program where by nurses are trained and assigned to different parts of the country as mental health workers. Their activities range from pr

An outbreak of SARS-CoV2 infection in a Barcelona prison was studied. One hundred and forty-eight inmates and 36 prison staff were evaluated by rt-PCR, and 24.1% (40 prisoners, two health workers and four non-health workers) tested positive. In all, 94.8% of cases were asymptomatic. The inmates were isolated in prison module 4, which was converted into an emergency COVID unit. There were no deaths. Generalised screening and the isolation and evaluation of the people infected were key measures. Symptom-based surveillance must be supplemented by rapid contact-based monitoring in order to avoid a

BACKGROUND: Obesity is increasingly recognized as a complex chronic condition shaped by genetic, behavioural, social, and environmental fact … " collaborations typically involved healthcare, academic, community, and faith-based organizations. Community health workers emerged as central actors linking clinical and social domains. Interventions often targeted minority populations and emphasized cultural relevance. However, outcome measures remained largely biomedical, with limited integration of DoH indicators.

Community health workers (CHWs) play a crucial role in supporting retention in HIV care in Tanzania under the World Health Organization's Treat-All policy. While the WHO promotes the differentiated service delivery (DSD) model for stable clients, not all people living with HIV (PLHIV) can achieve sustained viral suppression independently. Using ethnographic case studies of one CHW and three vulnerable clients in Shinyanga, Tanzania (2022-2023), we examine how CHWs adapt patient-centred care in the current era of Treat-All. The findings demonstrate that treatment adherence for highly vulnerable…

BACKGROUND: Community Health Advocates (CHAs) are widely employed as outreach workers for people who use drugs (PWUD), yet there is limited evidence on how to design capacity-building interventions that strengthen peer-driven behavior change in binational border settings. This study examined a structured capacity-building model that trained peer CHAs in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas to deliver an HIV prevention and skills-building intervention to PWUD and assessed its impact on HIV risk and protective behaviors.
METHODS: We employed two complementary evaluation methods: (1) a quan

BACKGROUND: Community-based para-professionals are trained or untrained professionals who assist in the delivery of health-related care in communities where they live. The role of community-based para-professionals in supporting early childhood development (ECD) supports has attracted increased attention recently, particularly in the context of severe constraints in the global health workforce. However, these practitioners face challenges associated with low status and poor working conditions. In response, the study reported here aimed to gather expert views on essential knowledge, skills and

BACKGROUND: Globally, 8 million babies are born with a congenital anomaly annually causing 240,000 neonatal deaths, with 95% disease burden in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Early neonatal screening, timely referral and management can lead to reduced disability and mortality. The WHO recommends employing lay health workers (HWs) as agents to promote health due to critical shortage of health service providers worldwide. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a learner-centered educational intervention to train lay HWs to screen neonates for external congenital anomalies and t

In January 2022, a number of Yellow Fever cases were identified in Kenya's Isiolo County for the first time, triggering a national-level response centred on vaccinating residents. 181,000 people were vaccinated in July, around 72% of the eligible population. In the face of this ostensible success, this article explores the continuing coloniality, that is, long-standing patterns of domination, operating within disease control in Kenya's northeast, whereby punitive encounters with the state loom large. Despite health matters being devolved, top-down implementation from nationally-controlled acto

Ethiopia has adopted the Integrated Community Case Management of Newborn and Child Illness (iCMNCI) strategy to expand access to neonatal and child health services. This study assessed compliance with the iCMNCI case management protocol at the primary care settings. A descriptive cross-sectional assessment was conducted in eight districts of Benishangul-Gumuz Region from April to December 2019, and 1,217 sick children aged 2 to 59 months and 43 sick young infants aged 0 to 2 months who sought clinical consultation at the 236 health posts were selected purposively. Trained supervisors reviewed

Rising social, health and healthcare challenges in Canada signal a need for a paradigm shift. This issue centres on the case for social prescribing - connecting patients to community resources via "link workers" - as strategic infrastructure for improved population health. The papers in this issue lay out a vision for the future, building on this social prescribing model, and offer implementation lessons, such as prioritizing high-complexity clients and maintaining an equity focus. They also raise some important cautions, such as the need to maintain a strong welfare state, to avoid narrow Nat

This paper studies disaster training work of one of the original grantees of the Worker Training Program of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences: The International Chemical Workers Union Council (ICWUC) and its consortium of unions and national organizations. The consortium developed disaster train-the-trainer curriculum in English and in Spanish, so worker trainers would be poised to do training during, after, and in prevention of disasters. This paper reviews the program and its impact on affected communities - with both a historical perspective and with interviews of 20 o

SARS-CoV-2 may pose an occupational health risk to healthcare workers. Here, we report the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, self-reported symptoms and occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2 among healthcare workers at a large acute care hospital in Sweden. The seroprevalence of IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 was 19.1% among the 2149 healthcare workers recruited between April 14th and May 8th 2020, which was higher than the reported regional seroprevalence during the same time period. Symptoms associated with seroprevalence were anosmia (odds ratio (OR) 28.4, 95% CI 20.6-39.5) and ageus

BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) play a vital role in spreading health-related information in low-and middle-income countries. Assessing their knowledge is crucial to combat health misinformation.
OBJECTIVE: To identify locally relevant COVID-19 and mental health-related information commonly held by CHWs and the misconceptions most prevalent in their communities in Haiti, Malawi, and Rwanda.
METHODS: A card-sorting activity was conducted with 39 CHWs from rural communities in Haiti (n = 13), Malawi (n = 12), and Rwanda (n = 14), between February and April 2023. The activity involv…

In many low-income countries, volunteer health advisors (VHAs) play an important role in disseminating information, especially in rural or hard-to-reach locations. When the world's largest outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) occurred in 2014, a majority of cases were concentrated in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Twenty cases were reported in Nigeria initially and there was a need to rapidly disseminate factual information on Ebola virus. In southeast Nigeria, a group of VHAs was being used to implement the Healthy Beginning Initiative [HBI], a congregation
