"Each one of us did the best we could for the community, while also supporting each other": community residents' perspectives on community health worker (CHW) response during the COVID-19 pandemic - a community science worker-led qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted the health and social wellbeing of the United States population, disproportionately affecting low-income, immigrant communities of color. In Orange County, California, community health workers (CHWs) were essential to addressing multilevel community needs among impacted communities. However, little is known about how communities and CHWs responded to meet their needs amid pressing challenges. METHODS: CHWs completed a popular education qualitative methods program under a Community Science Worker (CSW) model to design and facilitate fou

Lessons learned from handling a large rural outbreak of Legionnaires' disease: Hereford, UK 2003.

The outbreak of Legionnaires' disease that occurred in Hereford, West Midlands UK in 2003 was the single largest outbreak of Legionnaires' in Hereford and one of the first to challenge the newly formed Health Protection Agency. This was, de facto a 'public health incident' requiring not only the investigation and management of a community outbreak of infectious disease, but also one that had to take into account other issues including: uncertainty regarding roles and responsibilities, political considerations and communication needs including sustained media attention. The incident also demons

The need for psychosocial support amid COVID-19 crises in Nigeria.

With the closure of all public places, the stay-at-home order and the worsening economic indices occasioned by the fall in the price of crude oil with no foreseeable end, learned helplessness, negative emotions, and other psychosocial problems are bound to thrive. Interventions to improve social capital, coping resources, resilience, and good community and family cohesion are needed to promote psychosocial well-being during and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. Empowerment for adults with chronic mental health problems and obesity.

Obesity is a major health risk and a common problem among people with mental health problems. This article examines the role of empowerment within a health promotion framework for overweight and obese adults with chronic mental health problems. Behaviour change, while a valid strategy for health promotion, might not achieve the desired health gain. On the other hand, an empowered individual or community is able to bring about positive and permanent change by mobilising the necessary resources to achieve health.

Caregiving strategies for young infants born to women with a history of substance abuse and other risk factors.

Social risks such as exposure to family violence, drug or alcohol abuse, poverty, adolescent parenting, or a history of abuse and neglect can limit parenting ability because individuals may lack the physical, personal, or emotional resources to provide an environment that facilitates the optimal development of infants. Community health, home care, and other nurses can provide needed support and information to parents of young infants from families with multiple risk factors. Caregiving strategies to demonstrate to mothers of young infants are described.

"Trying to Keep Things as Normal as Possible for the Kids": Parenting Stress and Resilience within Wildfire Disasters.

Despite the proliferation of disasters within our ongoing climate crisis, we know relatively little about the burdens and intersecting inequalities faced by parents in climate disasters and the diverse, creative ways parents promote resilience. Here, we present findings from interviews with Disaster Case Managers (DCMs, N = 13) in the West Coast of the United States after multiple massive wildfires, analyzed using grounded theory methods. Findings point to the disproportionate suffering of particular families (indigenous, LGBTQ, immigrant, low-income), as they had fewer resources and more over

Criteria and enabling conditions for assessing cash-releasing interventions: An evidence review in the context of the NHS 'three shifts'.

The NHS faces unprecedented financial pressure, requiring the identification of cash-releasing interventions (CRIs). To support evaluation of this, we established five criteria based on relevant frameworks. We conducted an evidence review of published and grey literature (2019-2025), identifying and evaluating CRIs aligned with NHS England's 'three shifts'. 186 papers (filtered from 5,175 papers through eight stages) and 151 grey literature documents were assessed against the criteria. No sources contained enough information to determine whether they were cash releasing. There were 332 interve

Advancing FAIR data towards comparable, organized, predictive AI-ready data for community validation.

The interrogation of data across biological and environmental systems has become increasingly complex. Fortunately, communities are adopting the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles for individual datasets, and continue to develop domain-specific, machine-actionable standards. However, integrating FAIR data for meta-analysis across data resources is still challenging. Understanding how disparate datasets are organized remains a manual, time-consuming process. Updating FAIR databases to reflect changes in knowledge is slow, allowing stale annotations and incorrec

A Qualitative Study on Barriers and Facilitators to Effective Collaboration Between Local Health Departments and Hospitals.

A central component of the Public Health 3.0 model is building partnerships between local public health departments and other community organizations/stakeholders, including public and private hospitals, as a means of promoting data sharing, service coordination, and collective action. Evidence suggests that such partnerships remain challenging and infrequent. This qualitative study used in-depth interviews to identify barriers and facilitators to building effective collaboration between local health departments (LHDs) and hospitals. We purposively recruited LHD officials (n = 12) across the U

The dangerous precedent of censoring scientific dissemination.

The American Transplant Congress (ATC) is the largest national transplant meeting in the United States jointly sponsored by the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. The 2024 ATC was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during which a number of peer-reviewed scientific abstracts were censored from the program by the Health Resources and Services Administration. These abstract presentations were redacted from the program for perceived conflict with current government policy effectively restricting dissemination of highly rated findings and discussion

Examining sexual minority engagement in recovery community centers.

INTRODUCTION: Research indicates that sexual minority (SM) individuals with alcohol and other drug use disorders may underutilize recovery resources generally but be more likely to use recovery community centers (RCCs). To inform recovery supports, this study characterized SM and heterosexual RCC members by demographics and clinical and recovery support service utilization. METHODS: Cross-sectional secondary analyses compared SM and heterosexual RCC members in the northeastern U.S. (n = 337). Qualitative analyses coded the top three recovery facilitators. RESULTS: Of the 337 participants (Me
