A total of 500 subjects (288 males and 212 females) were tested in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in Virology and Rickettsiology Division of the National Research Institute of Health, in 1987, for anti R. prowazekii using Complement Fixation Test (CFT). The IgM globulin response has been measured following the onset of primary Q fever infections. A complement fixation test method was used to measure the IgM after separation by ultracentrifugation in a sucrose density gradient. Specific IgM was demonstrable between 2 and 10 wk after onset of symptoms. The test can be used to confirm a recent infection when only a 'convalescent' blood specimen has been collected and will be useful in the assessment of workers' compensation claims.

Antinuclear antibodies were detected by immunofluorescence in most sera from rabbits immunized with whole human serum emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant. Four of 14 sera from rabbits immunized with Cohn fractions III, IV-1, or IV-4 also gave positive nuclear fluorescence with human leukocyte nuclei. This report describes the clinical course of a 16-year-old Canadian-born Chinese boy who has progressive rubella panencephalitis. The progression, the lack of response to 'Isoprenosine', and the additional finding of myopathy are discussed. The clinical and pathological features of this rare, progressive neurological disorder are also summarized. In view of the last major rubella pandemic occuring in the mid-60s, it is likely that during the next few years physicians will diagnose an increased number of patients with this distinct neurological entity.

Farmers were evaluated for the presence of farmer's lung disease by serologic methods and by clinical histories. From a large farming population screened serologically, 40 of 92 farmers with precipitating antibodies to the thermophilic actinomycetes consented to be evaluated for clinical evidence of farmer's lung disease. A case of disseminated histoplasmosis followed later by disseminated coccidioidomycosis is described. The clinical illness and immunologic studies suggest subtle defects that may have existed antecedent to infection and, thus, provided an opportunity for widespread dissemination by these normally nonopportunistic organisms. Poor correlation was noted between the clinical course and in vitro tests of cell-mediated immunity.
