Classification of diabetic foot ulcers.

It is known that the relative importance of factors involved in the development of diabetic foot problems can vary in both their presence and severity between patients and lesions. This may be one of the reasons why outcomes seem to vary centre to centre and why some treatments may seem more effective in some people than others. There is a need therefore to classify and describe lesions of the foot in patients with diabetes in a manner that is agreed across all communities but is simple to use in clinical practice. No single system is currently in widespread use, although a number have been pu

Thirty Years of LGBTQ Pre-Publication Knowledge Production in Higher Education Research: A Critical Summative Content Analysis of ASHE Conference Sessions.

The purpose of this critical content analysis was to explore LGBTQ pre-publication knowledge production by examining conference sessions at one of the leading U.S. academic conference for higher education researchers. Between 1986 and 2015, there was an increase in the number of sessions focused on LGBTQ individuals and topics. However, these sessions comprised less than 1.4% of the total sessions. The majority of sessions used broad terms to discuss LGBTQ topics and often conflated sexuality (e.g., gay, lesbian) with gender (e.g., transgender). When specific sexualities were identified, the m

A term infant with prenatally noted ambiguous genitalia and nonpalpable gonads presented with life-threatening hyponatremia, hypertension, acidosis, and anuric renal failure requiring peritoneal dialysis at age 3 months.Sequencing confirmed 46, XY Denys-Drash syndrome (DDS) due to heterozygous Wilms tumor-1 exon 8 mutation encoding p.His445Arg. Renal US identified bilateral multifocal renal masses at age 8 months. Bilateral retroperitoneal nephrectomies found bilateral nephroblastomatosis without Wilms' tumor avoiding chemotherapy, followed by bilateral laparoscopic orchiopexies. We suggest mo

Overcoming Translational Barriers in Acute Kidney Injury: A Report from an NIDDK Workshop.

AKI is a complex clinical condition associated with high mortality, morbidity, and health care costs. Despite improvements in methodology and design of clinical trials, and advances in understanding the underlying pathophysiology of rodent AKI, no pharmacologic agent exists for the prevention or treatment of AKI in humans. To address the barriers that affect successful clinical translation of drug targets identified and validated in preclinical animal models of AKI in this patient population, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases convened the "AKI Outcomes: Overc

Histiocytic cell neoplasms involving the bone marrow: summary of the workshop cases submitted to the 18th Meeting of the European Association for Haematopathology (EAHP) organized by the European Bone Marrow Working Group, Basel 2016.

The bone marrow is a preferential site for both reactive and neoplastic histiocytic proliferations. The differential diagnosis ranges from reactive histiocyte hyperplasia in systemic infections, vaccinations, storage diseases, post myeloablative therapy, due to increased cell turnover, and in hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, through extranodal Rosai-Dorfman disease to neoplasms derived from histiocytes, including histiocytic sarcomas (HS), Langerhans cell histiocytoses (LCH), Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD), and disseminated juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG). One of the most important recent dev

Treatment issues for children with epilepsy transitioning to adult care.

This is the third of three papers that summarize the second symposium on Transition in Epilepsies held in Paris in June 2016. This paper focuses on treatment issues that arise during the course of childhood epilepsy and make the process of transition to adult care more complicated. Some AEDs used during childhood, such as stiripentol, vigabatrin, and cannabidiol, are unfamiliar to adult epilepsy specialists. In addition, new drugs are being developed for treatment of specific childhood onset epilepsy syndromes and have no indication yet for adults. The ketogenic diet may be effective during ch

Overview of the 2014 Food and Drug Administration Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee meeting regarding cangrelor.

Landmark clinical trials have established the benefit of P2Y12 inhibitors in the setting of acute coronary syndrome and percutaneous coronary intervention. On February 12, 2014, the Medicines Company (Sponsor) presented efficacy and safety data regarding cangrelor to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee. The Sponsor sought approval for 2 indications: (1) in the setting of percutaneous coronary intervention for the reduction of thrombotic cardiovascular events (including stent thrombosis) in patients with coronary artery disease and (2) in the

[Networking, Coordination and Responsibilities based on Health Regionsplus: New Health Political Approaches and Developments in Bavaria].

For many health and health-care problems in the population, there is a need for professional management and coordination instruments as well as a competent local network. The new "Health Regionsplus" in Bavaria offer such a structure. This new concept is presented in the following article. The "Health Regionsplus" aim to improve the population's health, the health-related quality of life, equity in health, as well as to further develop the local health care. The Bavarian State Ministry of Health and Care will support up to 24 regions with a funding of up to 50 000 Euro yearly per "Health Regio

2013 College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Annual Meeting: pediatric cardiology: an overview.

Congenital heart defects can be classified as those characterized by a left to right shunt, a right to left shunt, obstruction to flow from the heart, or abnormalcies of myocardial contraction and relaxation. Left to right shunts include atrial and ventricular septal defects, and patent ductus arteriosus. Right to left shunts include transposition of the great arteries, tetralogy of Fallot, tricuspid atresia among others. These defects result in cyanosis. Lesions causing obstruction to blood flow from the heart include aortic and pulmonary valve stenosis and coarctation of the aorta. Disorders

Panel 1: Epidemiology, natural history, and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: The First International Symposium on Recent Advances in Otitis Media (OM) with Effusion was held in Columbus, Ohio, in 1975. The symposium has been organized in the United States every 4 years since, followed by a research conference to (a) assess major research accomplishments, (b) identify important research questions and opportunities, (c) develop consensus on definitions and terminology, and (d) establish priorities with short- and long-term research goals. One of the principal areas reviewed quadrennially is Epidemiology, Natural History, and Risk Factors. OBJECTIVE: To provi

The ESF meeting on "The proteomics, epigenetics and pharmacogenetics of pendrin".

Human pendrin (SCL26A4, PDS) is a 780 amino acid integral membrane protein with transport function. It acts as an electroneutral, sodium-independent anion exchanger for a wide range of anions, such as iodide, chloride, formate, bicarbonate, hydroxide and thiocyanate. Pendrin expression was originally described in the thyroid gland, kidney and inner ear. Accordingly, pendrin mutations with reduction or loss of transport function result in thyroid and inner ear abnormalities, manifested as syndromic (Pendred syndrome) and non-syndromic hearing loss with an enlarged vestibular aqueduct (ns-EVA).

From private club to professional network: an economic history of the Health Economists' Study Group, 1972-1997.

HESG was founded in 1972 as part of a conscious effort to establish health economics as an identifiable sub-discipline. It is debatable whether the growth of health economics was demand-led or supplier-driven, but in either case the existence of a HESG played a vital role. HESG was founded as a private club, in the tradition of English gentlemen's clubs, designed to provide a forum for debate and an invisible, supportive faculty for health economists dispersed between different organisations throughout the UK. It was given impetus by public economists at the University of York, who were effect
