OBJECTIVES: We wanted to estimate the birth prevalence of multiple congenital contractures (MCC), determine the cause of the MCC according to the primary level of involvement of the developing motor system, and compare the different groups in terms of inheritance, mortality, and morbidity.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective epidemiologic study through the screening of registers, reviews of medical records, and clinical re-examinations was performed in western Sweden to identify all the children with MCC born between 1979 and 1994.

The effects of interferon-alpha2b (IFN-alpha2b) on Dupuytren's and control palmar fibroblasts were evaluated using the fibroblast-populated collagen lattice model. Three paired strains of Dupuytren's and control fibroblasts were exposed to IFN-alpha2b for 96 hours before incorporation into triplicate collagen lattices. Contraction of the lattices was recorded and Northern blot analysis of cytoskeletal mRNA was performed. Displaced fractures of the radial head that require reduction or excision are often associated with longitudinal instability. Where possible (type II), these fractures should be stabilized with rigid internal fixation In cases in which the initial displacement reflects complete dissociation, supplemental stabilization and repair may be required. We reviewed retrospectively 94 patients who had undergone soft-tissue release to correct flexion contracture of the knee to determine the incidence of postoperative hypertension. The cause of contracture in most patients was cerebral palsy (45) or old poliomyelitis (39). Twenty patients developed persistent hypertension. Two of them were symptomatic, one developing hypertensive encephalopathy. Patients who had had poliomyelitis were at a higher risk than those with cerebral palsy; the risk increased with bilateral procedures. A new approach to the operative treatment of syndactyly and contracture of the hands of children with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa is described. It is based upon the principle of surgical release of fingers allowing spontaneous epithelialisation of skin wounds without using skin grafts. Nineteen children had operations using this method, with an incidence of recurrence of 53%. This method has the advantage of a short operating time, simple technique and limited trauma.

Plantar fibromatosis is a benign multinodular lesion occurring in the plantar fascia. It is generally an asymptomatic lesion or may occasionally cause discomfort or pain in the foot. We present a man who has bilateral flexion contractures of his great toes as a result of his plantar fibromatosis. A review of the literature indicates that this is a very rare presentation of plantar fibromatosis.

Conventional therapy for postoperative bladder neck contracture (BNC) has been associated with a high recurrence rate. Fifty bladder neck contractures were treated with neodymium (Nd):YAG laser using a contact technique. There were eight recurrences, seven of which were managed successfully with a second treatment. Nd:YAG laser disintegration is a safe and effective therapy for postoperative bladder neck contracture.

It is reported about the results after operative mobilization of knee joint in 19 patients with contractures of extension muscles of knee joints. After operative arthrolysis and/or Payr-Plasty the range of motion has increased on average from 23 degrees to 92 degrees (a relative gain of 52%).
