Partial agenesis of the corpus callosum in spina bifida meningomyelocele and potential compensatory mechanisms.

After a review of Arthur Benton's conceptual and methodological contributions to the understanding of normal and pathological development, we discuss agenesis of the corpus callosum (CC), criteria for potential neuroanatomical compensatory mechanisms in CC agenesis, and the results of an examination of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data of the CC in 193 children with spina bifida meningomyelocele (SBM). There were 26 CC regional patterns. Although complete agenesis did not occur, partial agenesis was observed in 102 children and within 15 CC regional patterns. Only 4.1% had a normal CC. Qua…

Contribution of alcoholism to brain dysmorphology in HIV infection: effects on the ventricles and corpus callosum.

Nonrigid registration and atlas-based parcellation methods were used to compare the volume of the ventricular system and the cross-sectional area of the midsagittal corpus callosum on brain MRIs from 272 subjects in four groups: patients with HIV infection, with and without alcoholism comorbidity, alcoholics, and controls. Prior to testing group differences in regional brain metrics, each measure was corrected by regression analysis for significant correlations with supratentorial cranial volume and age, observed in 121 normal control men and women, whose age spanned six decades. Disregarding …

Extreme microcephaly with agyria-pachygyria, partial agenesis of the corpus callosum, and pontocerebellar dysplasia.

A 1-year-old boy with extreme microcephaly and a complex brain malformation is reported. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an abnormal gyral pattern with features of the agyria-pachygyria spectrum, partial agenesis of the corpus callosum, severely hypoplastic posterior cerebellar vermis, and an abnormal foliation pattern of the cerebellar hemispheres associated with a flat and wide isthmus and pons. Although this phenotype shares some features with malformations classified as microcephaly with a simplified gyral pattern, microlissencephaly, or lissencephaly with cerebellar hypoplasia, none o…

Thin corpus callosum and amyotrophy in spastic paraplegia--case report and review of literature.

We report the clinical, structural, functional and genetic characterization of a 37-year-old Caucasian female, presenting as a sporadic case of complicated spastic paraplegia with thin corpus callosum (CC), cognitive impairment, amyotrophy of the hand muscles and a sensorimotor neuropathy and review the literature for spastic paraplegia with thin CC. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination revealed a thin CC with fronto-parietal cortical atrophy. 18Fluordesoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) showed reduced cortical and thalamic metabolism. By transcranial magnetic stimulatio…

Relation of corpus callosum and hippocampal size to age in nondemented adults with Down's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Aging in Down's syndrome is accompanied by amyloid and neurofibrillary pathology, the regional and laminar distribution of which resembles pathological changes seen in Alzheimer's disease. Previous studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated age-related atrophy of medial temporal lobe structures in nondemented older subjects with Down's syndrome, reflecting early allocortical pathology. Corpus callosum atrophy has been established as a marker of neocortical neuronal loss in Alzheimer's disease. This study investigated whether atrophy of the corpus callosum and hippoc…

Morphology and morphometry of the corpus callosum in Williams syndrome: a T1-weighted MRI study.

Williams syndrome (WS) is characterised by a defined genetic aetiology and a specific cognitive profile. It provides an opportunity to examine associations between neuroanatomy, behaviour, and genetics. High-resolution T1-weighted MRI of the brain of 12 patients with WS and 12 normal control subjects were used to estimate the shape and volume of the corpus callosum (CC), as well as the voxel intensity values as a measure its water content. The CC of patients with WS was more convex than that of normal control subjects and overall smaller in volume, particularly in the splenium and in the cauda…

Geometric morphometrics of corpus callosum and subcortical structures in the fetal-alcohol-affected brain.

BACKGROUND: Although experienced clinicians have been diagnosing fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) for nearly 30 years, the rest of the spectrum … hometric representations of shape for 33-landmark point configurations and 40-point outlines of the corpus callosum along its midline (a slightly nonplanar structure). RESULTS: There are striking differences between exposed and unexposed in the statistical distributions of these two shapes. The differences are better characterized by excess variance in the expos …

Quantitative morphology of the corpus callosum in children with neurofibromatosis and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Neurofibromatosis-1 is a common autosomal-dominant genetic disorder associated with numerous physical anomalies and an increased incidence of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Studies of children with idiopathic ADHD have suggested a link between corpus callosum size and symptom severity. This study examines the contribution of corpus callosum morphology to symptoms of ADHD in children with neurofibromatosis. Eighteen control subjects and 36 children with neurofibromatosis underwent magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. Twelve subjects with neurofibromatosis had evidence of A…

Bilateral representation of language function. Agenesis of corpus callosum by Wada and PET activation.

A 33-year-old right-handed man with intermittent headache was found to have agenesis of the corpus callosum. He underwent magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography (PET), and detailed neuropsychologic tests, including a Wada test. There was bilateral representation of language, and a PET activation study with word repetition revealed bilateral areas of activation that were not completely symmetric. These findings and the literature concerning agenesis of the corpus callosum are discussed as is the possible compensatory mechanism for absence of the corpus callosum, which is impor…

Patient with an Xp21 contiguous gene deletion syndrome in association with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

The so-called Xp21 contiguous deletion syndrome or complex glycerol kinase deficiency (GKD) usually presents with classical Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) or a milder dystrophic myopathy, adrenal hypoplasia, and GKD. A number of syndromic and nonsyndromic cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) also map to that location. To date, none of the cases of complex GKD have been associated with ACC. Here, we report on a patient with a complex phenotype as a result of the Xp21 contiguous deletion syndrome in association with ACC. Biochemical, cytogenetic, and molecular analyses were performe…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum in Schinzel-Giedion syndrome associated with 47,XXY karyotype.

The Schinzel-Giedion syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive condition with typical facial features, skeletal manifestations and congenital hydronephrosis and/or hydroureter. We report a male infant with Schinzel-Giedion syndrome, also showing the karyotypic abnormality 47,XXY. Agenesis of the corpus callosum and laryngeal stenosis were determined at autopsy. Besides typical Schinzel-Giedion syndrome, our propositus was found to be affected by Klinefelter syndrome. This represents a fortuitous anomaly, which is probably of no importance in the phenotype of the patient.

Clinical and developmental findings in children with giant interhemispheric cysts and dysgenesis of the corpus callosum.

Giant interhemispheric cysts in association with dysgenesis of the corpus callosum are rare. Clinical and developmental data concerning affected patients are limited, the pathologic basis for these cysts has not been established, and prognosis is uncertain. The purpose of our study was to describe the clinical and developmental findings for 11 children with giant interhemispheric cysts, dysgenesis of the corpus callosum, and ventricular dilatation. Eight of the children required ventriculoperitoneal shunting, eight had normal neurologic examinations, and seven had experienced seizures. Seizure…

An animal model of corpus callosum impingement as seen in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Callosal impingement has been postulated to cause the symptoms associated with normal pressure hydrocephalus. The authors developed an animal model for the investigation of corpus callosum impingement by the falx cerebri. METHODS: The corpus callosum was compressed from above by a plastic blade and surgically placed in the interhemispheric fissure in adult Sprague-Dawley rats. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed both preoperatively and postoperatively. The brains of the rats also were examined grossly at the time of autopsy. RESULTS: All rats survived the…

Occurrence of Andermann syndrome out of French Canada--agenesis of the corpus callosum with neuronopathy.

We report on two siblings, a boy and a girl, with agenesis of corpus callosum and neuronopathy. The children show diffuse hypotonia, delayed motor and mental development. Neurophysiological examinations revealed reduction of the motor nerve conduction velocity, absence of sensory nerve action potentials, abnormal somatosensory and visual evoked potentials. Nerve biopsies showed reduced density of myelinated and unmyelinated fibres in both children. We also found signs of hypomyelination and suggest this is secondary to degeneration of peripheral sensory and motor neurons. Our findings are cons…

Genetic epidemiology of sensorimotor polyneuropathy with or without agenesis of the corpus callosum in northeastern Quebec.

Sensorimotor polyneuropathy with or without agenesis of the corpus callosum (McKusick number 218000) is a disorder that has a high frequency in Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean (SLSJ), a geographically isolated region of north-eastern Quebec. The incidence at birth and the carrier rate were estimated, respectively, at 1/2117 liveborns and 1/23 inhabitants. Remote consanguinity was found in several polyneuropathic families while the mean kinship coefficient was 2.7 times higher in the polyneuropathic group than in control groups. The birth places of the individuals with sensorimotor polyneuropathy and thei…

[The characteristics of the bioelectrical activity of the human brain in lesions of different sections of the corpus callosum].

This work represents the results of analysis of EEG, its structure and spreading along the cortex in 44 patients with arteriovenous malformations of the corpus callosum. The method of quantitative EEG analysis was used with computation of the spectral power and intercentral coherence. The results gave a possibility of a comparative evaluation of changes in spontaneous cerebral activity after the lesions in different portions of the corpus callosum (anterior, middle, and posterior) and permitted to characterize their contribution into the genesis of EEG. A conclusion is drown that coherence spe…

Patterns of lesions of corpus callosum in inner cerebral trauma visualized by computed tomography.

Computed tomographic analysis of lesions of the corpus callosum in 13 patients with "inner cerebral trauma" showed significant congruence of linear translation of acceleration and the topographic distribution of such lesions. This congruence permits computed tomography to be used to reconstruct the course of linear translation and the site of the main blow, which can be important for forensic use. The findings of even a small lesion in the corpus callosum indicates the need for further investigation of other structures which are usually involved in inner cerebral trauma, such as the hippocampu…
