Two kinds of microorganisms are found in tissue of leprosy patients: Mycobacterium leprae (ML) and leprosy derived corynebacteria (LDC). ML from untreated patients has an alcohol-acid-fastness, which is lost upon treatment with antibiotics and immune response (tuberculoid leprosy). While toxin producing strains can cause pharyngeal diphtheria with potentially fatal outcomes, the more common presentation is wound infections. Connecticut established telephone-based gram-positive rod (GPR) reporting primarily to detect inhalational anthrax cases more quickly. From March to December 2003, annualized incidence of blood isolates was 21.3/100,000 persons; reports included 293 Corynebacterium spp., 193 Bacillus spp., 73 Clostridium spp., 26 Lactobacillus spp., and 49 other genera. Around-the-clock GPR reporting has described GPR epidemiology and enhanced rapid communication with clinical laboratories.

Ovine ulcerative balanitis and vulvitis in sheep of the Dorper breed has been observed in South Africa since 1979. Its aetiology has not been conclusively resolved, and there is some discrepancy in descriptions of its clinical features. We report on a 34-year-old homeless woman with polysubstance addiction, admitted with multiple skin ulcers initially misdiagnosed as insect bites during a dermatological teleconsultation. A wound swab revealed Corynebacterium diphtheriae. This case illustrates the danger of cutaneous diphtheria in vulnerable groups. It emphasizes the need for microbiological diagnostics in chronic wounds, as well as the importance of correct antibiotic therapy and strict isolation measures to prevent outbreaks.

A total of 147 uterine-cervical exudates and milk samples from 165 lobes of the mammary gland of sows with clinical symptoms of mastitis-metritis-agalactia (MMA) were studied microbiologically. It was found that greatest was the share of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus organisms taking part in the microbial etiology of the syndrome. Second ranked Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Corynebacterium pyogenes along with some aerobic sporulating bacilli.
